What do you mean, Daley (Gareth Daley)? What are you getting at, my guy? “Make a getaway… / Where we can dictate the mood… / Cause lying here with you / Could feel like ecstasy.” No further explanation is needed for “Lavender”! The English R&B/soul singer-songwriter has the bedroom in mind on this purple single. “Lavender” was written by Daley, Cameron Lewis Palmer, and Thomas Ford. Daley produced it with Swindle.

“Lavender” commences with gorgeous, lush, orchestral strings. The strings set the romantic tone and vibe. After the strings do their thing, a soulful, contemporary R&B groove settles in. Both the beat and the bass provide a mighty anchor. The song’s form is relatively straightforward: Verse / Pre-chorus / Chorus / Verse / Chorus. Daley sounds buttery smooth, never over-singing during the first verse, excerpted earlier. The pre-chorus that follows only occurs once, where Gareth asserts, “There are new colors that appear / When you’re hear with me.” Aww! The chorus that is the crème de la crème:

Let go your pretenses

In the second verse, Daley sings with more oomph, showing off his ripe upper register. “Here in the purple light,” he sings, “We’re so much more than black and white, yeah.” Yeah, indeed! That falsetto pops something fierce. During the second chorus, his ad-libs, riffs, and runs are celestial. Ultimately, if you need a song that soundtracks the bedroom with your significant other, look no further than “Lavender”.

After multiple albums, Grammys, stylistic shifts, and prudent business decisions, Taylor Swift has built an empire and proven her musical versatility. After dabbling in alternative and indie stylings, she returned to pop on Midnights, released in 2022. Notably, she kicks off Midnights with a colorful record, “Lavender Haze.” From the outset, “Lavender Haze” is nothing short of a vibe. It is exquisitely produced by a team including Swift, Jack Antonoff, Jahaan Sweet, and Sounwave (!). As you might expect, the sound is distinct, contrasting with any and everything else that Swift has released to date. The slickness of the backdrop is ear-catching, but it’s Swift’s lyrics (and hazy vocals) that make “Lavender Haze” so delightful. She’s bothered by the noise made by others, such as, “All they keep asking me / Is if I’m gonna be your bride / The only kinda girl they see / Is a one-night or a wife.” Those are mic-drop worthy lyrics right there! The chorus, of course, is where Swift’s bread is buttered – Parkay, baby!

“I feel the lavender haze creeping up on me

Surreal

I’m damned if I do give a damn what people say

No deal

The 1950s shit they want from me

I just wanna stay in that lavender haze.”

“Lord of summer, looking like a stray stream of light,”

Jake Wesley Rogers sings in the first verse, and continues, “You’re my lover; walk the plank, dragonfly.” It’s giving L-O-V-E in a big way, and the world needs love! The openly gay pop singer-songwriter excels on “Lavender Forever”, the second track from his LOVE (EP), released in 2022. Lavender is significant and symbolic in many ways, including its association with calmness. Hey, there’s a reason I use lavender essential oils in the diffuser in my elementary music classroom 😉. In the LGBTQ+ community, lavender is significant too. That lavender scare was something else 😳. But, moving beyond that checkered history, lavender is symbolic of empowerment and queer resistance. What I’m saying is that Wesley Rogers’ assertion of being lavender forever is quite special and thoughtful. Wesley Rogers, Justin Tranter, Eren Cannata, and producer Mike Crossey composed this undeniable lavender goodness!

“Lavender Forever” shines for many reasons. It begins with the accompaniment: sublime piano riffs (Wesley Rogers), robust bass line, and stomping drum programming. The production is sleek and vibrant, with some truly creative moments. Still, Jake Wesley Rogers is the star. He is magnificent, delivering expressive, nuanced vocals. “Lavender Forever” is melodious throughout, while the lyrics are clever, poetic, and thoughtful throughout. “I was born and bred in flowers / Someone stole my superpowers,” he sings in the pre-chorus, and adds, “Sun-kissed in my darkest hour / I realized I’ve been.” What have you been, Jake? Beautiful! Beyond intriguing verses and a dynamic chorus, the bridge is nothing short of sensational (“I was born a lover / I will die that way”). Jake Wesley Rogers is one special fella. Songs like “Lavender Forever” show why the talented Midwestern musician deserves far more recognition.

Woo! Who doesn’t heart a lit groove? Disclosure (Howard Lawrence and Guy Lawrence) has had a knack for lit grooves, epic production, and dance hits for years – 🚫 🎓! ENERGY arrived quietly in 2020, but that doesn’t mean it lacked color or energy, for that matter! One of the best records from ENERGY was none other than “Lavender,” which enlists the services of rapper Chanel Tres (Sheldon Young). Stellar work behind the boards, coupled with infectious rhymes by Chanel Tres , makes “Lavender” a surefire vibe.

There is no shortage of memorable lines from Chanel Tres. The first verse is a fitting place to start, and the rapper makes it clear it’s all about her. This continues in the chorus, where Chanel Tres makes it clear, “I need you in my life, lady.” Ooh-la-la! In the post-chorus, “Girl, she be fuckin’ with my rhythm / she be fuckin’ with my rhythm, yeah.” What else can you say to that but, FU¢K YEAH! As the record progresses, she continues to be his focus, particularly in moments like, “Hear me say, ‘Now let me see you shake.’” If you missed out on this gem back in 2020 – it was the COVID-19 pandemic after all – well, it’s still lit AF in 2022. What I’m saying is, the lavender remains potent (“Is that lavender? / I like lavender”)!

Word, JVKE (Jake Lawson), word. The “Golden Hour” singer/songwriter has a knack for delivering pop bops, and “lavender” is no different. Letting that lavender calm him, he and featured guest Pink Sweat$ (David Bowden) can’t stay mad at their respective girls. Lawson continues singing in the centerpiece, the chorus: “Baby, we’re a mess, but it’s all okay / Reverse stress when you call my name / Like lavender / I can never stay mad at her.” JVKE wrote “lavender” with Bowden and his older brother, Zac Lawson. Both Lawson bros produced this sure-fire gem.

“Lavender” commences with a rhythmic keyboard loop that plays a key role. The warmth of the keyboard (chords) within the backdrop helps make this song sound inviting. Stylistically, this is R&B-infused pop, all the more heightened by the appearance of Pink Sweat$. JVKE sings fantastically, exuding charisma and swagger. Not only is he awesome in the memorable chorus, but he excels in the first verse:

“Drop out teach me how to love

It’s a classroom

Hot for the teacher

With a question I gotta ask you

Girl, what’s the move?”

Beyond JVKE, Pink Sweat$ brings the heat in the second verse, showcasing his own beautiful pipes: “She my butterfly, my honey bee / She my lemon, she my apple treat (sour and sweet) / For no reason, I’ll be cheesin’ / She look me in the eyes, and I can’t breathe in…” All in all, JVKE drops a hit with “lavender”, his calm, romantic addition to any playlist for any time of the year.
