Word: 5 Gems No. 27 (2026) features songs by Boards of Canada, Ed Sheeran, LUKAS OSCAR, Madonna, and Thomas Whitfield.

WORD is the keyword on Word: 5 Gems No. 27 (2026). Simply put, each song on this miniature playlist features the word, WORD! Besides the three artists already referenced, Word: 5 Gems No. 27 (2026) also features songs by Ed Sheeran and LUKAS OSCAR. So, without further ado, let’s embrace the power of WORDS on Word: 5 Gems No. 27 (2026)!

1.Madonna, “Love Without Words”
CONFESSIONS II » Boy Toy Inc. / Warner Records, Inc. » 2026
“Love Without Words” commences ambiently and enigmatically. The music does put you in a trance, which Madonna references in the lyrics. The memorable refrain recurs throughout. As the song progresses, the groove settles in, and the key and synth lines make more sense. Madge delivers respectable sung vocals that fit the dance aesthetic. There are even moments where her voice is even more robust, contextually, of course. The lyrics aren’t complicated but fit perfectly. “We had to come inside / Baby, free yourself and love is on the other side,” she sings in the first verse. Later, courtesy of the second verse, family enters the picture: “You are a sister to me / And I’m living on the neon.” The chorus, not to be confused with the trance-loving refrain, shines:
“We all learn from what’s outside
But love from in
You gotta burn just like a fire
But from within
We come from the rhythm that set us free.”
Wait for it… WORD! Stuart Price ensures the production never grows stale, throwing plenty of ideas and tricks into the mix. I love the bass-heavy drums that rear their head around 2:35 during the bridge (“Come to the club, come in to the club of love”). To reiterate, “Love Without Words” is a BOP!

2. Boards of Canada, “The Word Becomes Flesh”
Inferno » Warp Records » 2026
“The Word Becomes Flesh” is epic from the get-go. Enigmatic sounds commence. It thrives on ear-catching and striking synths and programming. Gradually, the record develops more, still maintaining distinct and unusual sounds. Drum programming enters the mix about 35 seconds in. Instrumental for its first two minutes and change. After the two-minute mark, unique spoken word vocals enter the mix, beginning with the lyrics excerpted earlier. Thematically, “Word” captures embryonic development. The title of the song references a scripture, John 1:14, which references a different birth, so to speak: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” The biological references are in-depth, nerdy, and part of the intrigue of this record. There are also robotic vocals that further enhance the listening experience. Ultimately, “The Word Becomes Flesh” is a captivating, rewarding electronic track. Boards of Canada keep things creative, intelligent, and quite rhythmic.

3. Ed Sheeran, “In Other Words”
Play » Warner Music UK Limited / Ed Sheeran Limited » 2025
“In Other Words” commences with warm, reflective piano. Ed Sheeran keeps the same energy, singing tenderly and expressively without forcing things. His tone is delightful. The songwriting is sincere, while the melodies are tuneful. “Give me your light and give me your shadow,” he sings in the second verse, and affirms, “I’m right by your side.” The chorus (excerpted earlier), one of the best moments of “In Other Words,” picks up steam but remains non troppo with subtle instrumental additions. Strings, arranged by Matthew Sheeran, appear in the second verse. Additionally, there are some harmonized vocals during the second verse as well, which increase the depth of sound. The second chorus is more developed than the first, though it still never overdoes it. A brief bridge distinguishes itself from the verses and choruses (“All of the stars in the moonlit sky / Couldn’t match what you are to me”). The chorus concludes “In Other Words” radiantly. At first restrained, the sound expands, with more dynamic string parts. “In Other Words” is an authentic, enjoyable, and lovely musical performance. The dedication and love that Ed Sheeran feels seem impenetrable.

4. LUKAS OSCAR, “Pretty Words”
“Pretty Words” » LUKAS OSCAR » 2025
“Feel like I shouldn’t
Say it out (loud)
Loud, but, oh
I love you.”
The sound and vibe are left-field yet ear-catching and intriguing. “Pretty Words” is a distinct, enjoyable, and captivating indie-pop song.

5. Thomas Whitfield, “We Need a Word from the Lord”
My Faith » Benson » 1991
According to the late, great Thomas Whitfield (1954 – 1992), “We don’t need another political uprising / We don’t need another conqueror on the scene.” Both are true. Whitfield made valid observations. So, Thomas, what do we need? “What we need is a special world that will bond within our hearts / And give us direction from above.” Also, true. Whitfield, who studied at the Detroit Conservatory of Music, penned and performed a gorgeous, meaningful, and spiritual song with “We Need a Word from the Lord”. Whitfield’s rendition, covered by Shirley Murdock and Vickie Winans, appeared on his 1991 album, My Faith.
The crème de la crème of “We Need a Word from the Lord” is its tuneful, uplifting, and wise chorus:
“We need a word from the Lord
A word from the Lord
Just one word from the Lord
Will move all doubts
And cause the sun to shine
And give peace of mind
Speak Lord, speak.”
Amen! The message urges us to focus on what He says instead of far less important or meaningful earthly things. Whitfield emphasizes our unworthiness and ignorance, lacking wisdom, understanding, and love, and asserts that “We’ve altered in the ways and we stand so much to gain.” So, what should we do? All lean into God and be like a sponge absorbing his excellence, omniscience, and ‘wonder-working power.’ Whitfield sings with a beautiful, refined tone, digging in as “We Need a Word from the Lord” progresses. He navigates the key change, which increases the energy, like a champ. If you need a powerful, resonating word, this Whitfield gem will bless you.
