1. Malcolm Todd, “Jean Skirt”

Is there any doubt what’s going to become of her jean skirt? Context clues, people! Alternative R&B and bedroom pop singer-songwriter Malcolm Todd (Malcolm Todd Hobert) commences his sophomore album, Do That Again, with the minute-long “Jean Skirt”. Although brief, “Jean Skirt” catches the ear and sets the tone.  Hobert wrote and produced the record with Charlie Ziman, Jonah Cochran, and Matthew Castellanos.

Malcolm Todd sings well, painting a picture of the impending S meets E, and then they X.  There are no dirty words or slang to be found, but there’s no doubt about what Todd and this girl are going to do.  “I’m getting sweaty, you’re getting ready / To make me sweat some more,” he sings, and concludes, “I had my tank top, you had your jean skirt / And now they’re on the floor.” Again, use the clues given.  Shaved legs, sweat, clothes off… Short but sweet, “Jean Skirt” is a great way to start Do That Again as well as 13 Songs Where the Apparel is King. Oh, and that final, boisterous chord is pretty rad 🤘!

2. Kehlani, “Folded”

Those pesky matters of the heart have reared their ugly head on “Folded”, one of the best songs by R&B singer-songwriter Kehlani (Kehlani Parrish) [she/her/they/them]. Parrish won the first two Grammys of her career for this tour de force from her self-titled 2026 album (Best R&B Solo Performance and Best R&B Song). Kehlani co-wrote “Folded” with Andre Harris, DIXSON, Kamal Wilson, Don Mills, Donovan Knight (D.K. the Punisher), and Khris Riddick-Tynes. Harris, Mills, D.K. The Punisher and Riddick produced it.  The backdrop is gorgeous: lush, striking, and sleekly executed in every way. Parrish has ample fuel for her vocal fire, though she’s on autopilot from the get-go.

Kehlani delivers one of the premier vocal performances of her career.  Her instrument sounds pitch-perfect and radiant, delivering impressive runs and utterly sublime nuances. Her performance sounds authentic, as she lays it out there for this person.  She brings the oomph to the tuneful melodies, while the lyrics are incredibly memorable.  In “Folded,” she seems to battle between still loving and being open to try again with this person, yet she is also prepared to send them on their way. “Can you come pick up your clothes? / I have them folded / Meet me at the door while it’s still open,” she sings in the unforgettable chorus, continuing, “I know it’s getting cold out, but it’s not frozen / So come pick up your clothes / I have them folded.” With the door still ajar, in the pre-chorus, Parrish asserts, “I’ll let your body decide if this is good enough for you / Already folding it for you / Already folding it for you.” Superb vocals, writing, and production earn the Grammy-winning “Folded” a spot near or at the top of Parrish’s fabulous catalog.

Woo! Ah, The Other Realm (Kenneth Ward) is honest about being in an uncomfortable place.  This place is not his scene or his jam, and he knows it!  “Whoa whoa whoa my new song is about crashing out in the club because so out of place,” Ward says of his single, colorful, awkward, undie-driven single, “Underwear Party (What Am I Doing Here?)”. Raise your hand if you have been in a similar predicament, one where you knew with all your heart that you needed to take your ass home! Maybe it didn’t involve underwear though… Anyway, the fierce and handsome alternative pop singer-songwriter’s discomfort is our listening pleasure on “Underwear Party (What Am I Doing Here?)” which he wrote himself.

There is a lot to ‘heart’ about “Underwear Party (What Am I Doing Here?).” First and foremost, Kenneth delivers a spirited performance.  He is playful and quite tongue-in-cheek.  Sometimes, he sings.  Sometimes he talks-sings.  Sometimes, he chants. Whatever he does, it’s entertaining! Slay fella!  The theme and lyrics play a pivotal role too.  And honestly, underwear never gets boring, whether you’re a kid giggling about it, an adult feeling awkward, or perhaps sneaking a peek at that hot guy who wears them extraordinarily well.  “This ain’t my thing, but I’m trying to have a good time / The music’s loud, and I feel like I can’t breathe right,” he sings, and continues, “Sexy show and tell, this is my personal hell / I feel so invisible, and it kind of fucking smells, eww!” The verses and pre-chorus are alluring, but the most memorable section is the chorus, expectedly:

“What am I doin’ here? What am I doin’ here?

I wanna fit in, but I wanna disappear

Everyone’s having fun, but I’m on the verge of tears

What am I doin’ here? What am I doin’ here?”

Beyond the singing and lyrics, “Underwear Party” features solid production.  What makes it slap? The rhythmic synths and the electrifying groove give club and party vibes.  The colorful production ups the ante.   That includes some fine electric guitar soloing and riffs towards the end.  Although it’s not his scene, The Other Realm does the damn thing on “Underwear Party (What Am I Doing Here?)”.

4. Demi Lovato, “Low Rise Jeans”

Oh my, indeed, Demi Lovato.  As for the vibe, the Grammy-nominated pop singer-songwriter gives us a surefire vibe with “Low Rise Jeans”.  Anytime low-rise jeans are involved, you know it’s S to the E to the X to the Y! The song appears on It’s Not That Deep (Unless You Want It To Be), the deluxe version of her 2025 album. Demi Lovato wrote “Low Rise Jeans” with Sarah Hudson, Leland, Jake Torrey, MNEK, and Zhone. Zhone produced it.

“Low Rise Jeans” features lush choral vocals in the introduction.  Demi Lovato sets the tone at the end of the intro, dropping a key, recurring word: “work.” Work Lovato does throughout the sexy single.  She is accompanied by superb production.  A danceable electronic pop track with a hint of R&B, Lovato sounds like she’s in her zone.  Those vibrant keys and synths, anchored by a strong beat, give her a serious lift. Of course, Demi is terrific – an incredibly talented singer.  She delivers sexy, sultry vocals, bringing the tuneful melodies to life.  The lyrics are naughty and titillating.  “My black G-string, peeking out from the corners…” Holy shit, Demi! Continuing in the revealing pre-chorus, her head wants connection, “But my lips and my hips, they got other plans.” Gah-day-um! The sexiest moment of the song should come as no surprise: the chorus.

“I’m in my low (Low) rise (Rise) jeans (Work)

You don’t need your imagination

I’m in my see (See) through (Through) tee (Shirt)

I can feel your anticipation.”

The post-chorus continues the ‘hot and bothered’ experience with pushing and pressing up… The bridge marks another high-flying moment, setting it apart from other sections. Still, sex remains a common thread: “Oh, what’s underneath, nothing’s forbidden /… You don’t need your imagination.” Demi Lovato gets down and dirty on “Low Rise Jeans”, and who would have it any other way?! Dis shyt sexy!

5. MOD SUN, “#noshirton”

If you’ve got it, then flaunt it. MOD SUN – Movement On Dreams, Stand Under None (Derek Smith) looks good with “#noshirton.” But would he still go shirtless even if his body were less appealing Probably not, judging by how carefree he sounds on the opener from his 2017 album, BB.  He continues rapping in the centerpiece, the chorus, “Now I’m getting so high, riding like she so low / No shirt on, head hanging out the window.” Woo! MOD SUN wrote and produced this shirtless banger.

The backdrop is bright, set in a major key.  The vibrance is fitting given the energy and positive vibes MOD SUN is sending up.  He’s young, confident, and filled with BDE.  In the first verse, he brags, “I got tats on my chest, gotta let that shit show / Yes, I am happy to be here, that’s just how I feel.” Word. He concludes the verse, asserting, “Goddamn dangerous, become an activist / I might save us all, in Mod we trust.” Woo! Showing he doesn’t give a fuck, in the second verse, he spits, “Who give a fuck if they diss you? / But y’all misuse tissues, you see, I only cry tears of joy.” Pretty wise, MOD, If I do say so myself.  In the pre-chorus, he encourages us to “spread love, not lust.” You know, the more I listen to this guy, his bare-chested, highly tatted self is making a lot of sense! Ultimately, MOD SUN serves up a heaping dose of fun and some sound advice on “#noshirton.” I only wish I had his confidence to let it all hang out 😝! Only in the privacy of the crib 😂!

6. Slayyyter, “BEAT UP CHANEL$”

WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA » RECORDS Label, LLC / Columbia Records » 2026

Slayyyter (Catherine Garner) has spoken, and, as usual, she is something else! A boring Slayyyter isn’t fun, so we’d prefer her to push the envelope rather than not. The song where the envelope is sufficiently pushed, “BEAT UP CHANEL$”,  is the second track on Slayyyter’s third studio album, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA. It was written by Slayyyter and producers Austin Corona and Wyatt Bernard.

Among the first things that stand out about “BEAT UP CHANEL$” are the distorted, aggressive, and unrefined vocals by Slayyyter during the verses. She gives us more rapping and talk-singing. “Don’t wanna talk with ease, I’m over all it / Don’t try fucking with me, boy, I don’t want it,” she bites in the first verse, and adds, unapologetically, “Never gonna be your girl, boy, I don’t want you.” Ooh-wee! A boisterous backdrop accompanies Slayyyter like a champ. Notably, there is a significant contrast between the verse (more minimalist) and the chorus (bigger, warmer synths).  Another notable contrast is that the chorus is much more melodic than the verses.

“Sex, money, drugs, chains on my chest, vintage Celine

Diamond grills, champagne bottles, I get for free

I want sex, money, bitches, and the stickiest weed

Fuck him, go into his closet, steal some of his Supreme

I want beat-up Chanels, I want new personnel

I wanna dye my hair every pretty shade of pastel

I want nasty afterparties, banged up at the motel

I want beat-up Chanels, I want something for real.”

Goodness gracious alive! To her credit, she’s honest, and honesty is the best policy! In the second verse, she throws in some more bangers like “I don’t give a damn, don’t you understand?” and “He looking when I dance, keep your head up out your pants.” 😳 In short, “BEAT UP CHANEL$” is another song where Slayyyter is true to herself through and through. Is she the WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA? Eh, there have been worse, but she sells the concept superbly on this bold, ultra-enjoyable pop cut.

7. Slayyyter, “brand new chanel$”

Oh, snap! Slayyyter (Catherine Garner) doesn’t stop there. She gives us another valuable piece of information we need to know about “brand new chanel$” – not to be confused with “BEAT UP CHANEL$”: “I know you had seen somebody / Was it worth causing all my darkest days?” One word: CHEATING. Slayyyter composed the song alongside producers Austin Corona and Wyatt Bernard.

“Brand new chanel$” commences with an enigmatic intro. Slayyyter brings smooth vocals when she enters, accompanied by rhythmic guitar. Eventually, a danceable beat enters, providing a mighty anchor. As “brand new chanel$” develops, Slayyyter digs in more, bringing more oomph and punch. There are plenty of memorable lyrics. “I, I bet she rock brand-new Chanels / What a chop, I cut you off and get away, yeah,” she sings in the pre-chorus, and adds, “Ah, in my apartment, my clothes in the corner / Why’d you let her stay the night?” The crème de la crème is the chorus:

“I’m holding it alone, just for tonight

I wonder if you got her in your room

I call you on the phone to start a fight

I know what you do, I see how you move

But I’m still here standing still.”

Oh, snap! The unforgettable lyrics don’t stop there, either! “Found out that you tried to kill me / Right before my most important day,” she asserts in the eyebrow-raising second verse, and continues, “Tell me why’d you ever bring her / In my home while I was so far away?” That is some shit, indeed! Oh, and the outro is a doozy, too, where “He want sex, money, bitches and to lie through his teeth /Getting head, white and blue if you know what I mean…” Ooh-wee! Although it is a bit all over the place, Slayyyter makes her point loud and clear lyrically on “brand new chanel$”. She sings expressively, and you buy what she’s selling.

8. sombr, “undressed”

I Barely Know Her » SMB Music LLC / Warner » 2025

Oh, snap 🫰, sombr (Shane Michael Boose)! Our Gen-Z alternative singer-songwriter had a breakout year in 2025.  “Undressed”, the seventh track from his debut album, I Barely Know Her, earned Boose a top 20 pop hit (it peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100). He wrote the song himself and produced it alongside Tony Berg. As the excerpted lyrics from the pre-chorus suggest, those pesky matters of the heart propel “undressed.”

“There’s nothin’ worse than seein’ your lover / Moving on while you still suffer.” Have truer words ever been spoken?! Although my guy sombr is a slim fella, he ate and left no crumbs on “undressed,” PERIOD! His vocals are strong from the beginning to the end.  He brings the relatively simple melodies to life. Tunefulness, baby! The section to beat is the memorable and catchy chorus:

“I don’t wanna get undressed

For a new person all over again

I don’t wanna kiss someone else’s neck

And have to pretend it’s yours instead.”

Word! The dedication is dedicated! The bridge distinguishes itself from the verses and chorus, with a more complex harmonic progression and more adventurous melody. “And I don’t wanna learn another scent / I don’t want the children of another man,” he sings, and concludes, “To have the eyes of the girl, I won’t forget / I won’t forget.” Beyond the vocals, lyrics, and tuneful melodies, the musical accompaniment earns high marks on “undressed.” The sounds that most impress the ears: The bass line, drum groove, and guitars, both acoustic and electric.  A breakout star, sombr truly makes our ears perk up with his naked gem, “undressed”.

9. Kim Petras, “Polo”

Lacoste? The polo is a key part of Kim Petras’ brief but fun song, “Polo”. The Grammy-winner co-wrote “Polo,” the fifth track from her 2026 album, Detour, with atlgrandma, Madison Love, and Nightfeelings (Nick Weiss). She co-produced alongside Margo XS and Nightfeelings. Lyrically, Petras has no shortage of striking moments.  Beyond the first verse (excerpted earlier,” she drops a pair of gems in the second. “You wanna pull it with your teeth / Chow-chow,” she sings, adding, “Sweat dripping down my upper thigh (Polo) / You wanna hit it with that polo stick (Right).” Polo stick, eh? The chorus is the crème de la crème – the section to beat:

“You wanna get me out my polo shirt (uh-uh)

… My polo and my mini skirt (Uh-uh)

Titties poppin’ out my bra (Like wow)

You wanna throw that to the floor (Right now)

Slap that logo on my ass (Uh-uh)

Make that pony come in first (Right now).”

Petras exhibits plenty of attitude and personality as she sings about sex.  As intriguing as her vocals are, the production slaps, too!  Ambitious, sleek, and soaked in the hyperpop aesthetic, the instrumental is prime fuel for Petras’ fire.  The beat and the malicious, sharp synths are everything! Kim puts her foot into “Polo”.

10. Jake Minch, “Fingers and Clothes”

What sticks to your fingers and your clothes, Jake Minch? Cigarettes… or at least the smell.  Our talented Connecticut-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter used to smoke those addictive cancer sticks but eventually quit.  But even when he’d say he’d quit and hadn’t yet, the smell was a dead giveaway. “Fingers and Clothes” is the fourth track from his 2025 debut album, George. “Fingers and Clothes” was written by Minch and Andy Seltzer. Tony Berg produced it.

“Fingers and Clothes” commences with an enigmatic instrumental introduction, featuring sustained pump organ and rhythmic acoustic guitar. The record features folk music accompaniment including keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums, percussion, and pump organ.  Jake Minch delivers beautiful vocals. He sings with incredible sincerity. The melodies are memorable, while the lyrics keep the same energy.  The songwriting is honest, poetic, and thoughtful.  “I was learning what addiction is,” Minch sings in the second verse, and continues, “We didn’t know what we were doing then, oh / But I was hanging on your fingers and your clothes.” The chorus, partially excerpted earlier, is the crowning achievement.  Minch continues:

“Tell me where your mind goes

Four years and you’re still not over it

Being 16 and stealing mom’s cigarettes

But I feel it every time I smoke.”

The bridge distinguishes itself from the verses and chorus. Here, Minch seems to discuss his both his addiction to cigarettes, as well as the need for the love of his partner.  “Please, there’s nothing after you,” he sings, and concludes, “There’s nothing after this.” All told, “Fingers and Clothes” is a fantastic song. It feels like Jake Minch poured his heart and soul into this one.

11. John Lithgow, “From The Indies To The Andes In His Undies”

Well, I’m not sure, John Lithgow (b. 1945) … The esteemed actor and children’s musician captivates on “From The Indies To The Andes In His Undies”. Yes, you read the title correctly… “From The Indies To The Andes In His Undies” is the 11^th track from his 1999 children’s music album, Singin’ in the Bathtub.  Notably, Lithgow’s version is a cover.  It was originally recorded by the Indiana rural rhythm musicians Hoosier Hot Shots.  Like John’s rendition, the original is also novel – truly something else. It’s intentional, of course – not meant to be taken seriously. Ernie Burnett, Billy Faber, and Larry Royal wrote the brief cut, which clocks in under two minutes in Lithgow’s hands. 

“Otto Zilch – he’s a hero of the ages! / Otto Zilch – he will surely enter history’s pages.” Um…yeah…. “From The Indies To The Andes In His Undies” is a striking, novel joint from the get-go. The playful, child-like sound effects add to the fun. Beyond the silly sound effects, the banjo and clarinet stand out within the musical accompaniment. Lithgow infuses plenty of personality, a must for children’s music. Of course, it is easy to do given the comical, tongue-in-cheek lyrics.  “From the Indies to the Andes in his undies / And he [Otto Zilch, apparently] never took a shave except on Mondays,” Lithgow sings, and continues, “He didn’t eat a thing but chocolate sundaes / ‘Twas a very, very daring thing to do.” Indeed.  Adding to the silliness, do you know what else Mr. Zilch did? “…He carried for a spare a pair of panties / But they didn’t fit him well; they were his auntie’s.” Lawd have mercy!  Silly to the nth degree, the unusual “From The Indies To The Andes In His Undies” is unforgettable by all means.

12. Tears For Fears, “Head Over Heels”

Songs From The Big Chair » Mercury Records Limited » 1985

Just the weather, Roland Orzabal? Something tells me that he wants much more than that.  He adds, “You keep your distance with a system of touch / And gentle persuasion.” Hmm, interesting. English new wave band Tears For Fears, comprised of Orzabal and Curt Smith, ate and left no crumbs in 1985.  How so? Their album, Songs From The Big Chair, was huge: multiplatinum. While “Head Over Heels” failed to reach number one like “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and “Shout”, it reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100.  This gem, written by Smith and Orzabal and produced by Chris Hughes, gave this English duo another unforgettable hit.

“Head Over Heels” marks another Tears For Fears song where Roland Orzabal handles lead vocal duties. The exception is contributions by Curt Smith during the second verse. Orzabal’s tone is everything. He is commanding and sounds incredibly sincere in his performance. Thematically, Roland is crazy about this girl.  But she doesn’t reciprocate in the same fashion. Is he too obsessed with her (“It’s hard to be a man when there’s a gun in your hand”), or is she just not feeling him like that (“With one foot in the past, now just how long will it last? / No, no, no, have you no ambition?”). The chorus is a big deal, where Orzabal admits he’s head over heels, and it affects him tremendously.

“Something happens, and I’m head over heels
I never find out till I’m head over heels
Something happens, and I’m head over heels
Ah, don’t take my heart, don’t break my heart
Don’t, don’t, don’t throw it away.”

Beyond the awesome vocals, tuneful melodies, and memorable lyrics, the production is exceptional! The music is cinematic and high-flying, with glimmering, vibrant keys, robust bass, and pummeling drums.  Given the electrifying sound, it’s no surprise this classic has been a popular source of sampling.  Following a dazzling outro with no shortage of “La, la-la(s),” the album version of the record ends with a scintillating live instrumental from the song “Broken”.  All told, “Head Over Heels” is another masterpiece from Tears For Fears. It’s complex, thought-provoking, and the epitome of musical art. It’s all the things and more!

Dolly Parton (b. 1946) is a treasure, a once-in-a-lifetime, precious gem. Iconic, Parton is a masterful singer-songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and philanthropist.  Her philanthropy is one of the biggest reasons I highly respect her.  With a catalog filled with jewels, a contender for the crown jewel is “Coat of Many Colors”, the opener from her 1971 album of the same name.  An ode to the power of a mother’s love, it is one of the most sentimental, touching songs ever composed. “Coat of Many Colors” was written by Parton and produced by Bob Ferguson (1927 – 2001).

“Coat of Many Colors” thrives thanks to its narrative-driven approach. Dolly Parton sings beautifully, with her distinct voice, vividly painting a picture of a family who were poor as church mice yet rich with love. Supported by simple but effective countrified music accompaniment – guitar, bass, organ, and drums – Dolly cooks! “I recall a box of rags that someone gave us / And how my mama put the rags to use,” Parton sings in the first verse.  In need of a coat “way down in the fall,” Dolly’s mother sewed this coat of many colors, and “told a story from the Bible /… About a coat of many colors Joseph wore.” With her mom blessing this modest garment, Dolly shares her excitement to “Wear it, and momma blessed it with a kiss.” From there, Parton sings the chorus, highlighting the significance.

“My coat of many colors that my mama made for me
Made only from rags but I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors my mama made for me.”

As the song continues, Dolly shares that the children at school laughed at her because of her clothing, including the coat of many colors. Despite their lack of understanding and empathy, she knew “my coat of many colors was worth more than all their clothes” and, in the final chorus, shares, “That one is only poor only if they choose to be.” In short, Dolly Parton recorded a country music masterpiece with “Coat of Many Colors”. She superbly captures the power of a mother’s love.  The song speaks for itself.
