1. Lady Gaga, “Abracadabra”

MAYHEM » Interscope » 2025

Lady Gaga, MAYHEM [📷: Interscope]

“Like a poem said by a lady in red / You hear the last few words of your life /With a haunting dance, now you’re both in a trance / It’s time to cast your spell on the night.”
Well, that’s fascinating, Lady Gaga (Stefani Germanotta)! The award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress put her dancing shoes on in “Abracadabra”, the ‘magical’ third single from her seventh studio album, MAYHEM.  Lady Gaga, watt (Andrew Watt), Cirkut (Henry Walter), John McGeoch, Pete Edward Clarke, Steven Severin, and Siouxsie (Susan Janet Ballion) penned “Abracadabra.” “Abracadabra” interpolates “Spellbound” by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Gaga, watt, and Cirkut produced it.

“Abracadabra” features some sickening dance music cues. An electrifying groove helps “Abracadabra” cook.  Also, the darker tilt of the song, alongside the minor key, makes it compelling.  As always, Lady Gaga brings her ‘A game,’ delivering a personality-laden performance, showing off her powerful pipes. The songwriting is intriguing. “Pay the toll to the angels / Drawin’ circles in the clouds,” she sings in the first verse, continuing, “Keep your mind on the distance / When the devil turns around.” Word. In the refrain, she asks to “Save me from this empty flight / In the game of life.” Life is a key component of “Abracadabra.” Melodically, the song is colorful, particularly with accidentals that give it a Dorian flavor. The section to be is the Infectious, tuneful chorus with some nonsensical syllables in the mix:

“Abracadabra, amor-oo-na-na

Abracadabra, morta-oo-ga-ga

Abracadabra, abra-oo-na-na”

In her tongue she said, ‘Death or love tonight’.”

In “Abracadabra”, Lady Gaga remains true to herself and the artist we’ve come to know and love.

2. Billie Eilish, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER”

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT » Darkroom / Interscope » 2024

Billie Eilish, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT [📷: Darkroom / Interscope]

“I want you to stay / ‘Til I’m in the grave / ‘Til I rot away, dead and buried / ‘Til I’m in the casket you carry.”
The love that a hypnotic Billie Eilish sings about on “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” is special – once-in-a-lifetime. A more subdued vocalist, Eilish’s approach and style are mesmerizing. On the fourth track from her commercially successful and critically acclaimed third album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, Billie never forces things, delivering sweet, easygoing, and amorous vocals. As usual, her right-hand man, brother, and fellow Grammy and Academy Award winner, FINNEAS (Finneas O’Connell), co-wrote and produced “BIRDS OF A FEATHER.” Ear-catching, “BIRDS” is groovy from the onset and never lets up.

With her angelic lead vocals, Billie Eilish delivers tuneful melodies during the verses and chorus.  Furthermore, she delivers memorable lyrics. “But you’re so full of shit, uh / Tell me it’s a bit,” she sings in the second verse, “Say you don’t see it, your mind’s polluted / Say you wanna quit, don’t be stupid.” The chorus is the section to beat, of course:

“Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know (‘Til the day that I die)

I said I’d never think I wasn’t better alone (‘Til the light leaves my eyes)

Can’t change the weather, might not be forever (‘Til the day that I die)

But if it’s forever, it’s even better.”

Besides those refined lead vocals, the harmonized background vocals are sweet, too. A big-time hit for Eilish, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” peaked at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, among her highest-charting singles.  “I don’t think I could love you more.” So, so sweet!

3. Xiuhtezcatl, “Careful”

TONATIUH » Boom.Records » 2025

“Are you community-made? Are you claimed by who you claim? / If you ain’t from or for the land / See what that says about you.”
Word. Xiuhtezcatl (Xiuhtezcatl Martinez) is incredibly unique (“Yo no soy artista común”). The activist and hip-hop musician delivered an awesome song with “Careful”. “Careful” is the second track from his 2025 album, TONATIUH. Xiuhtezcatl composed “Careful” with producers Adrian Quesada (of Black Pumas fame) and Sweetsound.  The musical accompaniment is colorful, with the organ, an anchoring, banging beat, and marvelous guitar chords.

Xiuhtezcatl, Careful [📷: Pirates Blend]

Xiuhtezcatl, who is bilingual, excels in English and Spanish throughout “Careful.”  He showcases his Spanish in the first verse: “Mis primas, mi pueblo, mi pelo sin liga / Flow Popocatepetl / Nimitztlamachtia / Yo no soy artista común.” He ‘bites’ in a later verse, asserting, in English, “Cast a fake to the sidelines, playing activist for the timeline / Are you really down for the cause that you claim / Clout got you like a moth to a flame.” Woo!  The tuneful, sung chorus, is the centerpiece:

“I’ve been under pressure

Hechándo le ganas hustle on what I was sent for

Barely working hard enough for y’all to say I’m special

The water high, baby, be careful.”

The handsome and talented Xiuhtezcatl delivers a surefire, must-hear banger with “Careful”.  This is a gem from 2024 that deserves to be brought into 2025 and beyond.

4. Omar Apollo, “Drifting”

God Said No » Warner » 2024

Omar Apollo, God Said No [📷: Warner]

“I wish I could jump from here / I wish I could fall from here / Could you take all my fears? / ‘Cause I’m drifting / I’m drifting away.”
Ah, the escapism! The stunning, gay Mexican American singer/songwriter Omar Apollo (Omar Velasco) is talented. Before officially coming out, the queer elements of Apollo’s music were easily perceptible. In his second studio album, God Said No, Omar further embraces who he is. “Drifting” marks one of many gems from his underrated sophomore LP. Teo Halm produced “Drifting,” which samples “Edge of The Ocean” by Ivy. Omar sounds stellar throughout “Drifting.” He sings expressively and with ease. Even so, he is reflecting on his feelings.  As light as the calm and cool but rhythmic backdrop is, as are Omar’s pipes, the things weighing on him are heavier.  At the end of the first verse, he sings, “Last night was the last night / That I tried to ignore.” So, he seeks to move forward from “past life.” In the second verse, he admits he’s “more restless than before.” That leads to the pre-chorus, where Velasco admits, “And I’m so tired of climbing / I can’t let go, maybe I should let go.” Perhaps.  That, in turn, leads to the centerpiece, the chorus, excerpted earlier.  He seeks that happier, sunnier place, something Dominique Durand expounds on in the post-chorus (“There’s a place I dream about / Where the sun never goes out…”). Omar Apollo is the sugar honey iced tea – how many more ways can I say it? “Drifting” is awesome!

5. Sabrina Carpenter, “Espresso”

Short n’ Sweet » Island » 2024

Sabrina Carpenter, Short N' Sweet [📷: Island]

“Now he’s thinkin’ ‘bout me every night, oh / Is it sweet? I guess so.”
What’s most sweet for Sabrina Carpenter is the breakout year she’s had in 2024. The breakout? “Espresso.” “Espresso,” the seventh track from Short n’ Sweet, earned Carpenter her first top-5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.  It is a fun, groovy, and infectious pop song that easily gets stuck in your head.  Yes, espresso is coffee but that’s not what Carpenter is getting at.  This is a confident, sexy, grown-up pop record from Sabrina, who is 25 – no longer a child actress! “My give-a-fucks are on vacation,” she sings in the first verse, adding “And I got this one boy, and he won’t stop calling / When they act this way, I know I got ‘em.” Oh, snap! Another lyrical gem that Carpenter throws at the audience? “My twisted humor make him laugh so often / My honeybee, come and get this pollen.” Carpenter delivers a playful vocal performance, backed by a sleek Julian Bunetta-produced backdrop. “Espresso” is just the beginning for Sabrina Carpenter… literally!

6. George Michael, “Father Figure”

Faith » Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited » 1987

George Michael, Faith [📷: Sony]

“Sometimes I think that you’ll never / Understand me (Understand me) / But somethin’ tells me together / We’d be happy.”
Noted, George Michael! The late, great pop singer, songwriter, and producer concocted a gem for the ages with “Father Figure”. “Father Figure” is the second track from his 1987 diamond-certified, Grammy-winning pop masterpiece, Faith. Michael wrote and produced it. Unsurprisingly, “Father Figure” spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was the only song from Faith nominated for a Grammy at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards.

“Father Figure” shines in every facet.  Instrumentally, it dons gorgeous keyboards, pads, and synths. The riffs are distinct and utterly sweet. The groove is a 10 out of 10, easily.  Of course, it’s the handsome and talented George Michael that everybody came for. He doesn’t disappoint, delivering terrific vocals.  His breathy tone, particularly in the first verse, is to die for. “That’s all I wanted, something special / Something sacred in your eyes,” he sings, continuing, “For just one moment to be bold and naked / At your side.” Oh, snap, George!  The melodies are tuneful throughout, with the centerpiece, the chorus, taking the cake. Following the first and second verses, there is a refrain that is varied, not to be confused with the chorus (excepted earlier). With the arrival of the chorus, George, the background vocalists (Chris Cameron and Shirley Lewis), and the musical backdrop, ‘kick things up a notch.’ Cameron and Lewis carry the melody, while Michael ad-libs and riffs.

“I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine (My baby)
I will be your preacher, teacher
Anything you have in mind (Hee)
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you
‘Til the end of time.”

The third verse is a vibe, like the first and second. Love (and sex) continues to be the modus operandi. Following the third refrain and second chorus, we get an extended bridge.  Bridges aren’t typically this long, but it works out well for GM. “Greet me with the eyes of a child / My love is always tellin’ me so,” he sings, continuing, “Heaven is a kiss and a smile /Just hold on, hold on, and I won’t let you go, my baby.” Although he was short-lived, dying at 53 years young, George Michael left an iconic musical catalog. “Father Figure” easily ranks near the top.

7. Kendrick Lamar, “GNX” (Ft. Hitta J3, YoungThreat & Peysoh)

GNX » pgLang / Interscope » 2024

Kendrick Lamar, GNX [📷: pgLang / Interscope]

“Tell ‘em Kendrick did it.”
Woo! Indeed, Kendrick Lamar ‘did it’ on “GNX”, the 11th track from his Grammy-winning album, GNX, released in 2024. Interestingly, the song was recorded just days before the album dropped.  GNX references a short-lived (1987) turbocharged coupe, the Buick GNX (Grand National Experimental). Lamar owns the rare car, which was released the same year he was born. Less heralded than other songs on the album, I find Hitta J3, YoungThreat, and Peysoh-assisted cut to be an entertaining, kick-ass, minimalist banger. “GNX” debuted at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Despite a minimal sound led by piano and 808s, there are five credited producers: Sounwave, Jack Antonoff (an executive producer), Rascal, Kenny & Billy, and Tim Maxey.

“GNX” bangs from the beginning.  It begins with the memorable chorus by K-Dot, which is Compton through and through.

“Tell ‘em Kendrick did it, ayy, who showed you how to run a blitz?

Tell ‘em Kendrick did it, who put the West back in front of shit?

Tell ‘em Kendrick did it, ayy, I’m trippin’ and I’m lovin’ it

Tell ‘em Kendrick did it, like wha—

Hi, have you ever been a joint and you know it?

Have you ever had to flip your unemployment?

On the dead guys, nigga, I aint goin’.”

He sets the tone for the rappers who follow. Peysoh raps the first verse, referencing murder several times (“All of my killers on go, like, who said somethin’? / Redrum, all I think about when I see heads come”). Hitta J3 takes the reins in the second verse, recollecting four different ages: 13, 14, 21, and 25.  “Ayy, like it’s Iraq, shooter name Hussein / Ridin’ with the dirty blicky, switchy, make a new flame,” he spits, concluding, “She said I been a dog all my life, bae, can you change? / True to my religion, Cuban links, more than two chains.” YoungThreat is the final voice heard, dropping some mean pop cultural references including “Get on my Bob the Builder shit, get down with the pliers,” and “I’m with some rockstar bitches, they want Lizzie McGuire.” Woo! All silliness aside, he concludes by asserting, “I kept my mouth closed, and I ain’t never leave no witness / D.O.A. up on the scene, tell ‘em YoungThreat did it, nigga.” Word 💯! Kendrick Lamar and company bring fire to “GNX”, soundtracking the rare sports car and most of all, Compton.

8. Gunna, “HIM ALL ALONG”

The Last Wun » Young Stoner Life / 300 Entertainment » 2025

Gunna, The Last Wun [📷: Young Stoner Life / 300 Entertainment]

“Scrooge McDuck, got one of my rooms all flooded with gold (Gold) / I done bought two, four, five, six, seven, eight karats in stones (In stones).”
Mentioning Scrooge McDuck in the opening line of the first verse of “HIM ALL ALONG” is badass, Gunna! Scrooge McDuck helps the melodic rapper illustrate his point flawlessly on this highlight from his 2025 album, The Last Wun.  The banger features a sleek, ‘cool energy’ backdrop produced by Turbo and Yung Bleu. A sickening beat anchors it.  As electrifying as the accompaniment is, it is ‘HIM,’ Gunna who ‘kicks ass and takes names’ on “HIM ALL ALONG.” Consistently melodic and rhythmic, his cadence and flow are intriguing, on-point! “Hold my team, now I plant the seed, give it water to grow… / Half a million euros in a third-world country, I travel the coast…,” he raps in the first verse, adding, “Always said that I wanted, young Wunna done done it, I do what they don’t.” The second begins with a swallowing reference 😏. He also informs us that he’s “really a martian / Excusin’ me through like a pardon, and I’m protected by carbons.” EXTRATERRESTRIAL! The chorus is a flex:

“They was tryna stunt my growth, I was steady chasin’ my goals
Nigga, why you watchin’? I’m grown, nigga can’t take my throne
Goin’ through the motions, stay strong, he done been him all along (Him)
Look at all this money we done grown, lot of different places I done flown.”

Although “HIM ALL ALONG” is relatively brief, it’s potent AF. Gunna has no shortage of confidence and personality.

9. Mitty Collier, “I Had A Talk With My Man”

Talking With Her Man: The Chess Singles 1961 – 1968 » Geffen » 2008

“I had a talk / With my man last night / He reassured me everything / Was still alright.”
Sometimes, Mitty Collier (b. 1941), we need reassurance, particularly from a significant other.  The doubts of the former soul singer, who became a pastor and gospel singer, are alleviated with this reassurance on “I Had A Talk With My Man”: “My blues got bright / He made me know / I was the star of the show.” Aww, the feels! The love! The romance! “I Had A Talk With My Man” appeared on her 1965 album, Shades of Genius, most accessible via the compilation, Talking With Her Man: The Chess Singles 1961 – 1968Billy Davis and Leonard Caston wrote it in its secular form. According to Secondhand Songs, it was adapted from “I Had a Talk with God”, written by the late, great gospel music legend, James Cleveland (1931 – 1991). Classy and refined, “Talk” exhibits some gospel sensibilities, evident in its meter, harmonic progression, and the robustness of Collier’s voice. “Talk” peaked at number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest charting song of her career.

“I said I sat down, and had / A talk with my man last night,” Collier continues enthusiastically, “He filled my heart with pure delight.” Sweet! Also sweet is the gorgeous instrumental backdrop that accompanies her. There is a sublime blend of orchestral touches (French Horn, strings, etc.) and the traditional rhythm section. Beyond the orchestration, the musical underpinnings, the harmonic progression shines.  There are some colorful chord choices, including an epic B-flat minor 7 flat 5 (an altered ii chord with a dramatic effect).  Still, Mitty Collier is the star, bringing the tuneful melodies and her loving relationship with ‘her man’ to life. “He told me that he needed me / More than words could ever say,” she asserts. What a heart-melting moment!  “I Had A Talk With My Man” also closes sensationally:

“I began to cry

He kissed my tears

From my weeping eyes

Oh, yes, he did, yes, he did

Yes, he did, oh, yes

I had a talk with my man last night.”

Simply put, they don’t make songs like this anymore. Classic, classic, classic!

10. BLACKPINK, “JUMP”

“JUMP” » YG Entertainment » 2025

BLACKPINK, JUMP [📷: YG Entertainment]

“BLACKPINK in your area.”
K-pop girl group extraordinaire BLACKPINK reunited in 2025! They’ve got things jumpin’ on “JUMP”! There are lots of cooks in the kitchen behind the scenes. Ape Drums, Zecca, Diplo, Boaz van de Beatz, and 24 produced it. The resulting musical accompaniment is S-L-E-E-K and likely expensive. Fittingly, the quick pace and driving sound of the instrumental makes you wanna… wait for it… JUMP! Most of the song is in English, but there are Korean moments within the pre-chorus and chorus. With a colorful instrumental backing them, the girls lock in! Rosé and Jisoo perform the first verse. Rosé asserts, “I’m not that easy to tame / You should see me under these lights.” Ooh-wee! Later, Lisa and Jennie perform the second verse, where Lisa asks, “Are you not entertained? (No) / I ain’t gotta explain / I’m with all of my sisters (Ah) / Got ‘em going insane, yeah (Yeah).” Both confidently perform the first pre-chorus (after the first verse), leading into the centerpiece, the chorus, performed by Jennie and Rosé. Following a dash of Korean, the ladies sing, “So come up with me, I’ll take you high / That Prima donna, spice up your life / You know I got that shit that you like / So come up with me, run up, uh, jump.” Lisa and Jisoo put a cap on things in the post-chorus, where Lisa asserts, “Wanna see you bumpin’, baby, bouncin’ to the bass.” Ultimately, “JUMP” is an engaging, enjoyable, and entertaining summery K-pop joint.

11. ADONXS, “Kiss Kiss Goodbye”

ADONXS, Kiss Kiss Goodbye [📷: Warner Music Czech Republic s.r.o.]

“Oh, you seemed so holy, it almost fooled me / Truly, when you said you love me, it almost moved me.”
Oh, snap, ADONXS! The dashing 😍, deep-voiced, openly gay Slovak singer (real name, Adam Pavlovčin) piques our ears with his Eurovision Song Contest 2025 single, “Kiss Kiss Goodbye”. Pavlovčin wrote “Kiss Kiss Goodbye” with CHAiLD (LUX), Maella, and Ines Coulon. Ronald Janeček, George Masters-Clark, and Lorenzo Calvo produced it. As the title and the excerpted lyrics from the pre-chorus suggest, matters of the heart play a sizable role. In the first verse, ADONXS mentions two kisses representing love and desperation. “There’s no other place to hide / Only one survives, when the night arrives / Will you be my ride or die?” In the second verse, before asking the same question, he sings, “Caught in a motion, you’re wearing me out / Tainted devotion, heart on the ground.” The section to beat, the centerpiece, is the chorus:

“Kiss, kiss goodbye (Kiss, kiss goodbye)

Kiss, kiss goodbye (Kiss, kiss goodbye)

Now keep your half apologies, drunken apathy

Over and over again

Kiss, kiss.”

ADONXS is fierce AF throughout “Kiss Kiss Goodbye.” His robust bass voice is the sugar, honey iced tea. The melodies he brings to life with his voice, including some falsetto, are nicely contoured and tuneful to the nth degree.  The musical backdrop is sleekly produced. Set in a minor key, the dramatic, choral, and orchestral music cues are epic.  The keyboards, synths, and programming are top-notch, too.  “Kiss Kiss Goodbye” is not an overtly queer song, but it feels like a necessary addition to an ever-growing queer music catalog.  ADONXS slays!

12. Al Calderon, “Lo100to”

“Lo100to” » Al Calderon / Create Music Group » 2025

Al Calderon, Lo100to [📷: Al Calderon / Create Music Group]Al Calderon (Alberto Calderon) is… caliente como la mierda 🥵, like, phew 😮‍💨 🤤!  Beyond his undeniable fineness, the actor and singer is talented. His talents and looks go hand in hand on the steamy joint “Lo100to” (Lo + 100  (cien in Spanish) + to = Lo siento (I’m sorry)).  Throw in sexy Spanish lyrics (“Pase lo que pase / Siempre seré tú bebé / Yo sé que te tengo juqueao”) and a video with sexy frat boys (sometimes sans clothing 🥵), and “Lo100to” is titillating to the nth degree.  Translating the excerpted Spanish lyrics, it is something to the effect of, “No matter what happens / I’ll always be your baby / I know I’ve got you hooked.” Damn!

The Long Island-bred entertainer gives us Spanglish! In the centerpiece, the chorus, he sings, “Oooh lo siento / Oh boy, you fuck me up / Yo pensaba en ti / Ya no puedo hacerlo,” which translates as “Oooh sorry / Oh boy, you fuck me up / I was thinking of you / I can’t do it anymore.” Ooh-wee! Notably, matters of the ‘same sex’ heart are alive and well, and we would not have it any other way 🌈! While “Lo100to” is brief, it is electrifying.  Calderon sings well.  He may not break a sweat vocally, but there is no way you won’t be covered in sweat looking 👀 and listening 👂 to him 🥵. Gah-day-um!

“She said, ‘Take your time, what’s the rush?’ / I said, ‘Baby, I’m a dog, I’m a mutt.’”
Woof, woof, woof! R&B singer/songwriter Leon Thomas struck gold with his honest single, “MUTT”. “MUTT” appeared on his second studio album, MUTT.  In the infectious 11th track, Thomas delivers a soulful vocal performance.  Additionally, the musical backdrop oozes with soulful vibes.  Produced by D. Phelps and Freaky Rob, “MUTT” gets a lift from an old-school sample: “Silly Love Song” by the soul collective Enchantment.  The song was inspired by Thomas’ sad dog after fighting with his cat, according to Billboard.  In the interview with Kyle Denis, Thomas adds, “I saw the similarities between [the dog and I and] how we have good intentions, but we don’t always do the right thing.” His Genius Verified video also confirms this. The chorus (excerpted above) is the centerpiece. Tuneful, it easily gets stuck inside your head.  The verses and pre-chorus are ‘no slouch’ either.  “I can’t smoke on Reggie 💨, so pardon my bluntness,” Thomas sings in the first verse, adding, “I see past pretty faces, so I got trouble trusting.” Oh, snap! The second verse is more colorful, referencing pant size (32), gun (32), and popping “a shroom to recreate the feeling / But it’s never the same as the first time we did it.” In the pre-chorus, despite his reservations, he’s allowing himself to be vulnerable, inviting her to “break my heart if you want to.” Ultimately, “MUTT” is a surefire vibe – one of the best songs of 2024, hands down.

“Is somebody gonna match my freak?”
Now that IS the question, Tinashe.  She follows up with, “Is somebody gonna match my nasty?” The contemporary R&B singer has a knack for delivering sexy songs. Honestly, who doesn’t enjoy a good sex song? “Nasty”, the eighth track from Quantum Baby, is Tinashe doing what she does best – S-E-X-Y! She says it best in the intro: “I’ve been a nasty girl, nasty.” Rick Reed and Zack Sekoff produced the record with top-notch results – a sleek, often minimalist instrumental. Besides asking who’s gonna match her freak in the first verse, she asserts, “Pillow talking got my throat raspy.” Oh, snap 🫰! She follows the verse with the refrain, where the quality of the sex is the draw.  “If you keep up with me / I’ll keep on coming back,” she sings, adding, “Cause it feels like heaven / When it hurts so bad.” She keeps the same energy in verse two. “Nasty” lacks depth but thrives on sex. Tinashe sings well, brings mad energy, and titillates the hell out of the listener. Omar Apollo loved it!

15. Cardi B, “Outside”

AM I THE DRAMA? » Atlantic Recording Corporation » 2025

Cardi B, AM I THE DRAMA? [📷: Atlantic Recording Corporation]According to the gospel of Cardi B, “Outside niggas love a outside bitch / But be mad when they – get some outside” (*cough, cough – Offset shade). The Grammy-winning rapper dropped “Outside” as a promo single for her long-awaited sophomore album, AM I THE DRAMA?. Cardi is aggressive, hard-nosed, and tough-minded. She gives us a well-rounded cadence and flow. She gets a lift from the malicious-sounding, minor-key instrumental. HeyMicki, Charlie Heat, and DJ SwanQo, all credited as writers, produced it. The beat makes you nod your head.  While the looped synths are sort of been there, done that, they are still effective. The spare brass moments are a highlight of the backdrop. Cardi B is unapologetic, asserting in the pre-chorus, “Next time you see your mama, tell her how she raised a bitch.” Oh, shit! The chorus that follows is fun, where the rapper is liberated, you might say:

“(I’m goin’ out), on the pop-out (Side), ‘cause it’s hot out

(I’m goin’ out), You was playin’ gamеs (Side), now you on timeout

(I’m goin’ out), Wherе the fine niggas? (Side), I’m tryna find niggas

(Out), I been cuffed up too long (Side), let me remind niggas (Yeah).”

Woo! The verses yield some memorable lines whether its, “I like my niggas black and country, that’s just what it is / I can tell that he excited ‘cause he go from small to big,” or, “Booty cheeks gotta shake, flirty niggas got some pape’ / Let me know the time and place, I’m just tryna ride his face.” Da-yum, Cardi! All in all, “Outside” is an entertaining rap banger.

“I know you wanted me to stay / But I can’t ignore the crazy visions of me in L.A.”
Understandable, considering Los Angeles is much more progressive than the South and much of the Midwest. Grammy-winning Pop singer/songwriter Chappell Roan (Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) continues singing in the first verse of “Pink Pony Club”, “And I heard that there’s a special place / Where boys and girls can all be queens every single day.” Yaasss, Queen 👸! The lesbian musician performed “Pink Pony Club,” the superb 11th track from her Grammy-nominated debut LP, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, at the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards. “Pink Pony Club” dates back to 2020. Amstutz and producer Dan Nigro penned the gem, which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. So, does this Pink Pony Club exist in real life? No, but the fictionalized gay bar is based on a gay bar where Chappell Roan visited in Santa Monica (The Abbey).  In this escapist song, the protagonist wants to (and does) leave the South (Tennessee, specifically) for Santa Monica. But her aspirations won’t be well-received by Mama… The South is different (I know from experience). Despite what Mama thinks, Roan asserts, “Oh, Mama / I’m just having fun / On the stage in my heels, it’s where I belong.” That leads to the centerpiece, the chorus:

“Down at the

Pink Pony Club, I’m gonna keep dancing at the

Pink Pony Club, I’m gonna keep on dancing down in

West Hollywood, I’m gonna keep on dancing at the

Pink Pony Club, Pink Pony Club.”

West Hollywood is a prominent LGBTQ+ area 🏳️‍🌈. In the second verse, Roan’s character’s confidence is ‘through the roof.” She feels more comfortable, memorably asserting, “Every night’s another reason why I left it all.” Still, she has not forgotten where she came from: “Still love you [Mama] and Tennessee, you’re always on my mind.” Chappell Roan sings beautifully, bringing the memorable melodies to life.  The production and sound of “Pink Pony Club” is awesome as well (keys, synths, groove, and a guitar solo).  It is not surprising that this pop record caught the ears of the world.

17. Ryan Cassata, “Queer Love Outlaw”

Greetings from Echo Park » Kill Rock Stars » 2025

Ryan Cassata, Greetings From Echo Park [📷: Kill Rock Stars]

“Oh, this queer love feels like home / This queer love feels like mine / Just right.”
As it should, Ryan Cassata. Of course, haters are gonna hate, namely conservatives, homophobes, and narrow-minded folks 😏.  Progressives and open-minded folks have far more fun… tolerance… acceptance… inclusivity… Anyways, despite the myopic yapping by judgmental folks, characterizing Ryan and other nonbinary, queer, and/or trans musicians as ‘unholy,’ ‘Godless love,’ and ‘Something corrupt,’ he embraces being a “Queer Love Outlaw”.  An acoustic version of the song was released in 2021, with the studio version released in 2023. “Queer Love Outlaw” ultimately appears on his 2025 album, Greetings from Echo Park.  With his authentic and sincere singing, and a fantastic backdrop, led by those epic-sounding guitars, “Queer Love Outlaw” rocks 🤘!

In the second verse, Ryan Cassata counters the damned to hell arguments, singing, “I’ve already been.” Amazingly, so many people don’t see that hell endured by queer folks that he speaks of, particularly from the T(s) in LGBTQ+. Furthermore, Ryan speaks of the harsh critiques and words, that ultimately, “This pain has made me wiser, and I swear I’m better.” 👏 👏 👏! In the chorus, he asserts proudly, “I’d rather be a rebel for romance / Than please your beliefs.” Now that deserves a resounding AMEN! HALLELUJAH! Adding to his queer story, Ryan mentions “Scars on my chest,” and the fact that “We shave our head,” both significant parts of the trans experience.  The bridge, excerpted above, perfectly captures pride in the queer experience, instead of doom, damnation, fire and brimstone, and perhaps, most egregious, ultra-conservative, myopic views. Yuck 🤢🤮! The ending is particularly grand, as Cassata beams with pride singing, “Oh, all my friends are outlaws / And all my friends are in love.” Cassata delivered a meaningful, queer-affirming gem with “Queer Love Outlaw”.

18. The B-52’s, “Rock Lobster”

The B-52’s » Warner » 1979

The B-52’s, The B-52’s [📷: Warner]

“Alright, alright.”
One of my favorite Panic! At The Disco songs is “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time”.  Besides the brilliant vocals of the handsome and talented Brendon Urie, the opening riff kicks ass and takes names.  There is a good reason for this ‘ass-kicking’ and ‘name-taking.’ Urie samples the 1979 ambitious, wacky, and weird The B-52’s classic, “Rock Lobster”.  The B-52’s – Fred Schneider (b. 1951), Ricky Wilson (1953 – 1985), Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, and Keith Strickland – are arguably best known for their top-10 hits that would arrive a decade after “Lobster”: “Love Shack” and “Roam”.  However, as odd as their debut single is, it impacted the pop charts, peaking at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1980.  The high-energy, infectious song is the fourth track from the band’s self-titled, five-star debut. All members of the band contributed to writing the song.

“(Sca-do-ba-da) We were at a party (Eww) / (Sca-do-ba-da) His earlobe fell in the deep (Eww) / (Sca-do-ba-da) Someone reached in and grabbed it (Eww) / (Sca-do-ba-da) Was a rock lobster (Eww).” Oh, my! According to Fred Schneider, because his earlobe fell, a rock lobster grabbed it… Word! Beyond the electrifying opening riff, what makes “Rock Lobster” the sugar honey iced tea is its unique sound and outlandish songwriting.  Approaching fifty years later, what other song sounds like this new wave, dance-rock track? None – it is in a league of its own.  Of course, how many bands were writing and performing songs about a beach party where a crustacean is front and center? “(Ah-ah-ah-ah) Rock lobster!” The tone of the vocals on the “Eww(s)” adds to the charm.  The B-52’s fully invests in the rock lobster, who, by the third verse, “Was in a jam (Hoorah) / He’s in a giant clam (Hoorah).” Oh, snap! The wackiness doesn’t stop there, either.  “Red snappers snapping /… Mussels flexing (Hoorah) / Flippers flipping (Hoorah),” Fred sings, in the fifth verse.  The final verse provides contrasts both lyrically and musically. Among the boldest lines not related to lobsters is “Boys in bikinis / Girls in surfboards,” which is quite progressive and unexpected for the time.  The lyrics continue to be interesting with dogfish being “chased by catfish,” and “Here comes a bikini whale.” Bikini whale?  What better wacky song to listen to than “Rock Lobster”? The B-52’s ate on this one!

19. Tate McRae, “Sports Car”

So Close To What » RCA » 2025

Tate McRae, So Close To What [📷: RCA]

“Where’d you put those keys? / We can share one seat.”
Hmm, wonder what Tate McRae is getting at on “Sports Car”?  No deep analysis is necessary – she’s being naughty! “Sports Car” is the third single and seventh track from her third studio album, So Close To What.  McRae, Julia Michaels, and producers Ryan Tedder and Grant penned “Sports Car.” It features mammoth drums and some whacky synths.  The sound is clubby with its hip-hop-infused pop vibes. McRae does a little bit of everything vocally – breathy vocals, ‘falsetto,’ and sexy whispers.  The keyword is ‘sexy’ as the big takeaway from “Sports Car” is naughtiness – sexual endeavors. “In the alley, in the back / In the center of this room / With the windows rolled down / Boy, don’t make me choose,” she sings in the pre-chorus regarding ‘where’ it ‘goes down.’

The crowning achievement is the chorus:

“I think you know what this is

I think you wanna uh

No, you ain’t got no Mrs.

Oh, but you got a sports car

We can uh-uh in it

While you drive it real far

Yeah, you know what this is

Yeah, you know what this is.”

Oh, the innuendo! “Sports Car” is a ‘thrill.’ McRae is having fun with him on this fun and titillating pop banger.

20. Tyler The Creator, “Thought I Was Dead” (Ft. ScHoolboy Q & Santigold)

CHROMAKOPIA » Columbia » 2024

Tyler, The Creator, Chromakopia [📷: Columbia]

“There’s more to life than just fuckin’ workin’, bro (They thought I was dead).”
Word. Of course, Grammy-winning rapper Tyler, The Creator (Tyler Okonma) was not dead. In 2024, following a three-year hiatus, Tyler dropped CHROMAKOPIA, another exceptional LP.  Among many highlights was “Thought I Was Dead”, where he tapped fellow West Coast rapper, ScHoolboy Q, and singer Santigold for the assist. Handling the production himself, Tyler created a fierce, striking, and vibrant rap banger.  Beyond the hard-hitting, syncopated beat, exuberant horns up the ante.  Not only is this some of Tyler’s sickest production work, but he drops his fair share of dope rhymes.  The chorus is infectious to the nth degree.  Why? Because, “Them niggas thought I was dead.” Woo!

The intro sets the tone for “Thought I Was Dead”: “You don’t wanna go to war with a soldier.” It samples “Basic Combat Training (BCT) – Marching to Chow” by Paul L.. Santigold performs the final line of the intro excerpted above. She also appears throughout the song with the colorful titular lyric, “They thought I was dead.” Tyler, The Creator snaps in the opening verse, asserting, “Okay, bitch, I’ve been trapped in a zoo / Nigga got plaques like the crack of a tooth,” and, referencing his past work, “Grab the blamer, fuck all the glitz and glamor / I want a crib in Atlanta, brodie, me and my bitch changin’ Pampers.” Woo!  ScHoolboy Q raps the second verse, showing off a badass cadence and flow. Perhaps his best line is, “Niggas tend to get rich, and they act weird (Weird) / How you walkin’ out the party with your butt pierced?” Damn! A fun bridge follows Q’s verse, performed by Tyler, accompanied by those sickening horns (“Packed in, goddamn, that dream…”). A second bridge follows the chorus, where Tyler informs us, “I don’t wanna be found, I don’t wanna be down.” He concludes “Thought I Was Dead” with an epic third verse filled with fiery bars. Among the gems: “White boys mockin’ this shit and y’all mad at me? Y’all can suck my dick,” “Bitch, you ain’t Coco Gauff, you can’t serve me,” “Fuck you know about being better than them niggas that you hate,” and “Why am I filled with this hate? Got freedom in every way / Y’all wanna take what I got, but y’all do not got what it take.” Anyone who thought that Tyler, The Creator was dead was mistaken. “Thought I Was Dead” slaps from start to finish. Nothing dead about this one!

21. sombr, “undressed”

“I’m lookin’ at you, and you’re lookin’ at me / But the glimmer in your eyes is sayin’ you wanna leave.”
Oh, snap 🫰, sombr (Shane Michael Boose)! Our Gen-Z alternative singer-songwriter had a breakout year in 2025.  “Undressed”, the seventh track from his debut album, I Barely Know Her, earned Boose a top 20 pop hit (it peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100). He wrote the song himself and produced it alongside Tony Berg. As the excerpted lyrics from the pre-chorus suggest, those pesky matters of the heart propel “undressed.”

“There’s nothin’ worse than seein’ your lover / Moving on while you still suffer.” Have truer words ever been spoken?! Although my guy sombr is a slim fella, he ate and left no crumbs on “undressed,” PERIOD! His vocals are strong from the beginning to the end.  He brings the relatively simple melodies to life. Tunefulness, baby! The section to beat is the memorable and catchy chorus:

“I don’t wanna get undressed

For a new person all over again

I don’t wanna kiss someone else’s neck

And have to pretend it’s yours instead.”

Word! The dedication is dedicated! The bridge distinguishes itself from the verses and chorus, with a more complex harmonic progression and more adventurous melody. “And I don’t wanna learn another scent / I don’t want the children of another man,” he sings, and concludes, “To have the eyes of the girl, I won’t forget / I won’t forget.” Beyond the vocals, lyrics, and tuneful melodies, the musical accompaniment earns high marks on “undressed.” The sounds that most impress the ears: The bass line, drum groove, and guitars, both acoustic and electric.  A breakout star, sombr truly makes our ears perk up with his naked gem, “undressed”.

22. Conan Gray, “Vodka Cranberry”

Wishbone » Conan Gray / Republic » 2025

Conan Gray, Wishbone (Deluxe) [📷: Republic]

“You say we’re fine, but your brown eyes / Are green this time, so you’ve been crying.”
Uh-oh… those pesky matters of the heart are in play, and it’s giving sad vibes! From the beginning, the gorgeous “Vodka Cranberry” is emotional and heart-wrenching. It marks the second single from Conan Gray’s fourth studio album, Wishbone. Following the queer romantic narrative of the fabulous promo single, “This Song”, “Vodka” sadly sees this relationship fall apart. “It’s in the way you say my name / So quick, so straight, it sounds the same.” The straightness of Gray’s partner, portrayed by Corey Fogelmanis in the music video, plays a sizable role.  Gray co-wrote “Vodka Cranberry” with Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/producer Dan Nigro, who also produced it. Once again, one of pop’s more underrated artists delivers a musical home run.

“Vodka Cranberry” is four minutes of musical excellence.  Sound-wise, there is a mix of alternative and folk-pop cues.  The rhythmic acoustic guitar, as well as the strings, are key instruments shaping the backdrop. The handsome, talented Conan Gray is the focal point – the cherry on top. As always, he delivers gorgeous, nuanced vocals.  You can sense the emotion he expresses as we see an all too common narrative where love should be love, but it’s complicated by internal homophobia and heteronormativity.  I love the playfulness of the melody Gray sings during the pre-chorus as he shares their compromised love status (“‘Cause I know what you’re too scared to say, oh-oh-oh”). He sounds particularly exceptional during the chorus as he gives an unfortunate ultimatum:

“Speak up, I know you hate me

Looked at your picture and cried like a baby

Speak up, don’t leave me waiting

Got way too drunk off a vodka cranberry

Called you up in the middle of the night

Wailing like an imbecile

If you won’t end things, then I will.”

Upping the ante on “Vodka” is the bridge, which contrasts the verses and chorus while still emphasizing taking action to end things. That sustained high note at the end of the bridge is insane! “Vodka Cranberry” is sublime.  Elite vocals, thoughtful songwriting, and stellar musical accompaniment and production. I love Conan Gray, and this song (and music video) only confirms it more!

“Baby (Woo-hoo), where the hell is my husband? (Woo-hoo) / What is takin’ him so long to find me?”
Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter RAYE (Rachel Keen) never fails to impress! In “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” she’s waiting for a great man to make her his wife.  She penned and produced “HUSBAND” alongside Mike Sabath. “Why is this beautiful man waiting for me to get old?” she asks in the first verse, and adds, “Wait till I get my hands on him, I’ma tell him off, too / For how long he kept me waitin’, anticipatin’.” The loneliness has really gotten to RAYE in the second verse, where, “I’m doing lonely acrobatics, unzipping my dress at 2 am / And I’m tired of living like this.” Her loneliness and yearning are our listening pleasure. From start to finish, RAYE wows with her commanding, distinct, expressive, and nuanced instrument.  The melodies are rhythmic and tuneful, while the lyrics are engaging, memorable, and in most instances, relatable.  Further fueling her fire is a colorful musical accompaniment, which has some jazz, soulful, and vintage touches.  Though old-school is easily perceptible, “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” sounds incredibly refreshing.  All told, RAYE knocks it out of the park with the promo single from her second studio album, THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.

24. Feng, “XOXO”

Weekend Rockstar » Regularisperfect » 2026

Feng, Weekend Rockstar [📷: Regularisperfect]

“Forget what I said, we’re not together for L.”
For L (life), huh? 💔 Hmm, my question is, why haven’t things worked out, Feng (Travas Alan Feneley)? A relationship doesn’t seem to be the modus operandi on the brief yet enjoyable “XOXO”.  But, as well all know, sometimes, S meets E, and then they X… 😈 This pleasant, sub-two-minute joint was written by Feng, Mark Foster, and Greg Kurstin.  Feng produced it.

“XOXO” begins with colorful keys and synths.  Although it is set in a minor key, “XOXO” isn’t incredibly dark.  Still, Feng, our Weekend Rockstar, expresses the fact, “‘I don’t want to see you again.’” But, what happens, per the end of the chorus: “I want this story to end, / I want you out of my head / But no matter how hard I try, we still end up in bed.” D-d-damn! It happens, though, Feng. Not only does the heart want what it wants, so does the body 😈. Beyond the chorus, there is one verse, which also features its share of memorable lyrics.  “Your flags were green, but they’ve all turned to red,” he asserts, and adds, “You keep playin’ games, you left me for dead.” Oh, snap! Another banger of a lyric concludes the verse: “… I heard your knock on the door / I want to jump out the window, but you’re so hard to ignore.” Word. “XOXO” is a bite-sized rap song by the Asian English rapper, but there’s no denying that Feng delivers another banger.  Adding fuel to the fire, it’s relatable.

“In the city, uh / ‘Member you used to drive a Yukon / I pick up whenever you call / In the parking lot in Tucson, like.”
Grammy-winning pop superstar Justin Bieber struck gold with his minimalist  Grammy-nominated single, “YUKON”. “YUKON” is the third track from his Grammy-nominated album, SWAG. It also appears on the expanded, SWAG II.  Notably, Bieber gave a captivating performance of “YUKON” at the Grammys.  Beyond his stripped performance, Justin stripped down too. JB in boxer shorts, with mad ink = hot 🥵 🥵 🥵. Bieber is one of 11 credited songwriters on “YUKON.” The song samples “Untitled” by EminemDaniel Chetrit, Sir Dylan (Dylan Wiggins), Carter Lang, and Dijon produced it.  “YUKON” peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“YUKON” is a surefire pop banger for many reasons.  It features a distinct groove that is irresistible.  The guitar is perfect as the primary accompaniment instrument.  Justin Bieber’s vocal performance is the main reason why “YUKON” shines.  He performs with unique, pitch-shifted vocals for most of the song. Even though the vocals are laden with effects, Bieber sings incredibly smoothly. Some of his ad-libs are sung in his traditional voice, contrasting his pitch-shifted vocals. There are also additional ad-libs that aren’t Bieber’s (2 Chainz, specifically).  Throughout, there are memorable lyrics and tuneful melodies.  “In the Phantom with the roof gone / I pull up like Jimmy Neutron,” Bieber asserts near the end of the first verse.  In the second verse, he informs her, “Just wanna be the one to give you what you want / I could put you in the Yves Saint Laurent.” There’s no doubt Bieber has the means to do so! The pre-chorus and chorus take the cake, lyrically.  In the pre-chorus, he blesses us with the memorable “Slide city, slide city / You know what that means” lyrics 😈.  Of course, the chorus is kind of a big deal, too: “What would I do (What would I do?) / If I didn’t love you, baby?” All told, “YUKON” ranks among the best moments from SWAG/SWAG II. Bieber does his big one on this one!

“So, say your prayers, you’re almost there / But it’s running out, it’s running.”
YUNGBLUD (Dominic Harrison) released an honest, personal, and vulnerable single with “Zombie”. “Zombie” is the fourth track from Harrison’s fourth studio album, Idols. Harrison sings about losing his grandmother. He penned “Zombie” with producer Matt Schwartz.

@yungblud

zombie. 🤍

♬ Zombie – YUNGBLUD

“Zombie” begins with a rhythmic guitar. Soon, the sound becomes grander, maintaining a dark vibe. Despite the dark vibes, YUNGBLUD delivers beautiful, expressive, and sincere vocals. The melodies are gorgeous during the verses. I love Harrison’s melisma. The lyrics are thought-provoking. “If I was to talk about the words / They would hurt, they would hurt,” he sings emotionally in the first verse, and continues, “So, if you were to ask about the pain / I would lie, I would lie.” Sometimes, the truth is too painful.  In this situation, it feels more fitting to lie to protect loved ones. In the second verse, YUNGBLUD sings, “We could catch a spaceship to the moon / But we’d crash, it wouldn’t last / Because the world is just a figment of the fools.”

Harrison’s vocals are much grittier during the big and powerful, zombie-driven chorus:

“Oh, I know that I can’t live without you

But this world will keep turning if you do

Would you even want me looking like a zombie?

Would you even want me, want me, want me?”

Being a zombie is not ideal.  It is optimal to be alive and well and not the shell of one’s former self. Harrison stated that seeing his grandma’s decline was incredibly difficult. Ultimately, “Zombie”, a four-minute ballad, is a deep, moving, and incredibly powerful song from YUNGBLUD.
