Carter Vail responds in an interview with Zach Sang. Perhaps it was dumb, as Vail asserts, but the 35-second song, “Dirt Man”, is also infectious and ear-catching. “Keep a little dirt under my pillow for the dirt man / In case he comes to town.” Yup, it’s a vibe, baby! Vail wrote and produced the opener from his 2024 four-song EP, Songs From the Internet.

The bossa nova groove further enhances the vibe – it’s classy and refined. Vail also sings beautifully, in a chill, cool, and easy fashion.  The words may be silly, but Carter brings sophistication. How does the rest of this brief but dirty verse play out?

“Keep a little dirt under my pillow for the dirt man

So, he won’t take me down

To his lair deep under the mountain (What are you talking about?)

Underground, that’s where he keeps his dirt.”

Again, silly, but irresistible.  Notably, Carter Vails is much tamer on “Dirt Man” compared to his other bite-sized Songs From The Internet (“Aliens Ain’t Shit”, “Fuck Up Your Shit”, and “Fast as Fuck”). Even sans the f- and s-bombs, “Dirt Man” is the sugar, honey, iced tea.

2. Leon Thomas & Kehlani, “Dirt On My Shoes”

Two of R&B’s freshest, most talented artists, Grammy winner Leon Thomas and Grammy nominee Kehlani (Kehlani Parrish), duet on the dazzling “Dirt On My Shoes”. “Dirt On My Shoes” is the penultimate track from Thomas’ 2025 album, MUTT Deluxe: HEEL. Thomas and Parrish co-wrote the gem with Khris Riddick-Tynes, Alex Goldblatt, D. Phelps, Joseph McCue, and Freaky Rob (Rob Gueringer). From the production side of things, Thomas and Parrish co-produced with Goldblatt, Phelps, Riddick-Tynes, Freaky Rob, and Jester Beats.

Kehlani draws first blood, singing the first verse, pre-chorus, and chorus. She sounds amazing, wooing and wowing us with her angelic tone and expressiveness. Parrish asserts he deserves the truth, singing, “Can you just close your eyes / So you don’t see the mess I hide.” The lyrics resonate in the pre-chorus as Kehlani characterizes him as “damn mature” and admits, “And I didn’t think to pack / On the first night that we had / Came back with some baggage / The reason that I’m damaged.” Thomas brings it in the second verse, pre-chorus, and chorus.  She joins him sparingly during his verse and fully collaborates in the pre-chorus and chorus.  Like Parrish, Thomas has his shortcomings.  Brilliantly, he highlights, “You got post-therapy clarity / And I got good sex and sincerity.” He adds vulnerable lines like, “You saw my heart and said you wasn’t scared of me,” and “‘Cause I been playing this terribly, uh / Forget what’s fair to me / But you deserve serenity.” Thomas sounds top-notch, bringing the melodies to life and impressing with his nuances. Their vocal chemistry is electrifying when they sing together, particularly in the chorus:

“And I knew I messed up the room

I had dirt up on my shoes

And I still walked into you

I still walked into you (Oh)

Oh, it’s such a mess (A mess)

We can make it up in bed

Dirt all on my shoes (My shoes)

And I’m tracking it all over the house

Tracking it all over the house

Tracking shit all over the house (Oh)

Would you still want me walking around?

Still got me walking around (Oh).”

Ooh-wee, that is fire 🔥! Leon Thomas and Kehlani put their foot into “Dirt On My Shoes”.  The vocals are elite, the songwriting sumptuous, while the musical backdrop is utterly sublime – lush and chock-full of soul.

Oh, snap! Grammy-nominated R&B singer-songwriter Chlöe (Chlöe Bailey) and Grammy-winning producer Timbaland join forces for a D-I-R-T-Y experience.  What are they doing? “Talking Dirty”!  No worries, though.  They don’t overdo it, though the innuendo is ripe. “Talking Dirty” is the opener from their 2026 collaborative album, Resurrection. The song was written by Chlöe, Timbaland, Mosley Brothers (Justin Mosley and Jordan Mosley), CRVS SERRANO, and Waves. Timbaland, Mosley Brothers, CRVS SERRANO, and Waves produced it.

“Talking Dirty” is brief – less than two-and-a-quarter minutes.  Still, this relatively slow but rhythmic cut has enough time to get this dirty talking session in! In the first verse, Chlöe takes the reins, literally: “Come inside, I’ve been thinking ‘bout this all night / Boy, I’m gonna do you right / Tonight, it’s me on top.” Oh… okay… 👀.  She’s turned on in the second verse, asserting, “I get so shy when you tell me the things / That you are gonna do, do to me / My heart’s speeding up, and I can’t help myself / Come over and show what you mean.” Well, as the saying goes, actions speak louder than words. Also, those hormones, they’ll get you every time! Chlöe keeps her vocal performance sexy and sultry, which is fitting for an R&B sex track. The vocal run that kicks off “Talking Dirty” is nothing short of sickening! Timbaland, beyond his brilliance behind the boards (that hard-knocking beat is the sugar, honey, iced tea), assists Chlöe in the chorus with backing vocals, excerpted at the top. That also includes his signature “fikki, fikki” sound effects.  All in all, add “Talking Dirty” to your playlist of bedroom songs. It’ll put you in the mood 😈!

4. Tyler Childers, “Dirty Ought Trill”

Lawrence County, Kentucky in the house! So, let me get this straight, Tyler Childers (b. 1991), my fellow Kentuckian. Uzi is the name of this malligator, which is officially called a Belgian Malinois. And if that wasn’t enough description from the Grammy-winning country singer-songwriter in the first verse of “Dirty Ought Trill”, he adds, memorably, “If you ever get the vibe you wanna fuck around and find / Gib laut.” Woof, woof!

One verse into “Dirty Ought Trill,” the 13^th and final song from Childers’ 2025 album, Snipe Hunter, it’s clear he’s one hell of a songwriter. And in the course of that verse, we never even determined what or who Dirty Ought Trill is! He composed this entertaining record himself, while the legendary Rick Rubin (b. 1963) produced it.

“Dirty Ought Trill” is epic; the first verse solidified that, and there’s plenty more. Musically, a strong groove anchors. There are plenty of colorful and funky music ideas, many of which transcend country music itself.  With music that cooks, Tyler Childers is on autopilot.  A bold, modern outlaw artist, he had us fucking around and finding out early! His voice is magical – it’s that distinct tone, I promise you.  With his instrument, he tells a marvelous story, expressed through intriguing and memorable lyrics, and enhanced by tuneful melodies.  Dirt Ought Trill is a character, specifically a hunter. That’s where that malligator comes into play – the “copperhead man” thing!  In the chorus, the crème de la crème, Childers paints Dirty Ought Trill as one hell of a hunter:

“Ain’t a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill

Huntin’ them white tail ruttin’ on the hill

Throwin’ that lead, layin’ ‘em still

‘Neath the trees when leaves all die.”

Much more could be said about this song, but I’ll keep it to a minimum.  The gang background vocals which recur throughout are a surefire vibe and feel Appalachian through and through.  There is a dynamic instrumental section – it’s always good to let the musicians cook.  All told, “Dirty Ought Trill” kicks ass and takes names, PERIODT!

5. MANÚ, “Dirty Laundry”

MANÚ (Juan Manuel Kornisiuk) is fine as hell. Gurlll, have you peeped those abs? Now that I got the objectifying out of my system, the Argentinian-bred, Sydney-based musician is also quite talented. The brief “Dirty Laundry” is one of many singles our gay heartthrob released in 2025. Kornisiuk and David Yaakov Goldberg wrote “Dirty Laundry,” while Miggy produced it. MANÚ ups the temperature, and it’s not only because he doesn’t wear a shirt 🥵! “Dirty Laundry” thrives thanks to its smooth, quintessential contemporary R&B vibes. There is some enticing chipmunk soul, which is always a plus.  This sleekly produced track excels with chill guitar, colorful keys, and striking drum programming. MANÚ brings the heat, impressing with his silky smooth vocals. The melodies are rhythmic yet chill and easygoing.  The chorus, as is so often the case, is the most memorable moment: “I’m still waiting on sorrys / Sick of your dirty laundry…” Oh, snap! At only two minutes and change, “Dirty Laundry” may not be long, but it is – wait for it –  hot 🥵… like MANÚ 🤭.

6. The All-American Rejects, “Dirty Little Secret”

Move Along » Interscope  » 2005

Sigh, you’ve gotta love the pop-punk, emo music of the aughts! Back then, those The All-American Rejects had a run going, led by their skinny (but tall and handsome) front man, Tyson Ritter (it’s those piercing eyes).  Even though Ritter informed her she’d be his “dirty little secret,” “Dirty Little Secret” wasn’t the least bit secretive.  “Dirty Little Secret” peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Rad, right? Right! “Dirty Little Secret” is about a secret relationship, period.  The specifics of that relationship are cloudy – we have questions.  Is this girlfriend a mistress?  Would friends and family take issue with this girl – is she ‘unfit’? Regardless of the circumstances, they’re an item and folks don’t know or need to know! The big takeaway is, we don’t get fun pop-punk/emo gems like this anymore, so let’s just enjoy this 2005 bop from Move Along.

7. JAY-Z, “Dirt Off Your Shoulder”

HYFR, JAY-Z! “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” is one of the best songs off Hov’s 2003 album, The Black Album, which ranks at the top of his discography.  It also marks one of the very best songs of his career too. What makes “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” the crème de la crème? First and foremost, JAY-Z is on-point.  As the intro lyrics suggest, he drops some of his most confident, potent rhymes ever. There is nothing more electrifying than the chorus, which has proven to be timeless – transcendent beyond the ‘00s:

“If you feeling like a pimp

Nigga, go and brush your shoulders off

Ladies is pimps too, go and brush your shoulders off

Niggas is crazy, baby, don’t forget that boy told you

Get that dirt off your shoulder.”

Besides some great lyrical punches – “But, like, 52 cards went out, I’m through dealin’ / Now 52 bars come out, now you feel ‘em / Now 52 cars roll out, remove ceilin’ / In case 52 broads come out, now you chillin’” – JAY is anointed by the production work of one of the best producers to do it, Timbaland.  Looking over Tim’s many productions, “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” definitely ranks among his best – ELITE! Why? The rhythms, the beat, the synths – it’s just celestial and a perfect fit for Hov. Everything about this SHOULDER joint feels right!

8. Christina Aguilera, “Dirrty”

Christina Aguilera got dirty.  Well, precisely, she got “Dirrty”. “Dirrty” was the promo single from her sophomore album, Stripped (fourth album overall, counting Mi Reflejo and My Kind of Christmas). The 16^th track peaked at number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 – modest to say the least.  Notably, on this sexed-up cut, X-tina is assisted by rapper Redman. Here, the ‘innocent’ pop star moves from being a “Genie in the Bottle” and singing about her “Reflection” to singing about S-E-X 😱!

Focusing on the song lyrics themselves, Aguilera does quite the about face from 1999, ha-ha.  For one, she’s “Sweatin’ ‘til my clothes come off,” and, apparently, she’s horny! “No question, time for some action.” Former teen pop stars aren’t allowed to be horny, especially in 2002! Actually, it’s the second verse where the eyebrows raise more as Christina encourages ass moving and sings about “Tight hip-huggers (low for sure).” Of course, in the chorus, they’re “Dancing, getting just a little naughty / Wanna get dirty, it’s about time for my arrival.”  Lyrically and thematically, Christina is a grown woman who wants to have fun.  She is a sexual being, and she’s not going to hold back. In the 2020s, this is considered incredibly tame… “Dirrty” earned most of its controversial label from its music video.  Sure, the lyrics represent a dramatic shift for Aguilera, but that video erased the Disney Channel star really quick! There was a petition to ban the video from MTV. Some of the controversial things include her attire or lack of…. Her backup dancers are ‘liberated’ too, dancing highly sexually. The shower scene is… you just have to see it.  These happenings in a boxing ring clearly suggest a sexual afterparty if you catch my drift 😈. Of course, it’s not just the women.  We couldn’t fail to mention those fit 🏋️‍♂️, hot 🥵, hunky, sweaty-bodied shirtless men, who dance (and grind) on Aguilera. This is incredibly hedonistic. Notably, the video was banned in Thailand due to signs regarding sex tourism, written in Thai, that appear in the background 🤯. “Dirrty” wouldn’t be controversial today, or at least to the same extent, but back in the early aughts, it earned its fair share of negative attention!

9. Wheatus, “Teenage Dirtbag”

👀 Beyond that disturbing gun reference, which was censored in the music video, what a debut single! Technically, the American rock band Wheatus is a no-hit wonder.  Yes, “Teenage Dirtbag” is the biggest, most renowned song of their career.  But, guess what? The third track from their 2000 self-titled album never reached the pop charts.  Wheatus has never earned an entry on the Billboard Hot 100.  That said, “Teenage Dirtbag” was popular worldwide, reaching number one in several countries.  In their native U.S., however, it settled for a bubbling-under status.  Still, this is an early ‘00s classic that has put in some mean streaming numbers.  Guitarist and vocalist Brendan B. Brown wrote the song.  He produced it with former band member Philip A. Jimenez.

“Teenage Dirtbag” is a surefire vibe from the get-go. The production is anchored by a strong groove, with turntable scratches enhancing the timbre. Brendan B. Brown delivers distinct lead vocals.  He sings expressively, with stellar, unforgettable lyrics throughout three verses. “Her name is Noelle, I have a dream about her / She rings my bell, I got gym class in half an hour,” Brown sings in the first verse, and adds, “But she doesn’t know who I am, and she doesn’t give a damn about me.” That’s so high school, isn’t it? In the third, Brendan asserts, “Man, I feel like mold; it’s prom night, and I am lonely.” Bummer. The chorus is the biggest section. It’s dynamic – the guitar and bass roar, baby) –  tuneful, and incredibly catchy:

“‘Cause I’m just a teenage dirtbag, baby

Yeah, I’m just a teenage dirtbag, baby

Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh.”

Beyond the verses and chorus, other sections catch the ear.  The refrain shines, not to be confused with the chorus or bridge.  “Oh, yeah, dirtbag / No, she doesn’t know what she’s missin’,” Brown sings.  In the bridge, Iron Maiden gets a shout-out once more:  “I’ve got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby…” Although “Teenage Dirtbag” didn’t chart on the pop charts (messed up), it is an enduring pop/rock/alternative rock classic from the 2000s.

10. Michael Jackson, “Dirty Diana”

Ooh-wee, Diana was something else, wasn’t she 👀?! Grammy-winning King of Pop Michael Jackson (1958 – 2009) dominated the 1980s. His three best albums – Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad – were released and/or impacted that decade. “Dirty Diana” is the ninth track on Jackson’s critically acclaimed but historically ‘snubbed,’ diamond-plus certified album, Bad. Bad ultimately won two Grammys (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, awarded to Humberto Gatica and Bruce Swedien, and, two years later, Best Music Video for “Leave Me Alone”), but none in major categories, or for his singing or songwriting. “Dirty Diana” was one of 13 number one hits by Jackson.  It spent one week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, the single was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. “Dirty Diana” was written by Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones (1933 – 2024).

With “Dirty Diana,” Michael Jackson embraced rock… or at least, pop/rock.  Also, The King of Pop is edgier here, with the songwriting. Sure, he’d already been “Bad” earlier in the track list, but Diana is different – willing to do anything! In the first verse, the always expressive and locked-in Jackson sings, memorably, “I’ve been here times before, but I was too blind to see / That you seduce every man, this time, you won’t seduce me.” Women’ll do that… Men too! In the second verse, she’s a groupie: “She waits at backstage doors for those who have prestige / Who promise fortune and fame, a life that’s so carefree.” In the chorus, the crème de la crème, Jackson personifies her, in an incredibly nuanced and spirited fashion:

“Dirty Diana, no

Dirty Diana, no

Dirty Diana, no

Dirty Diana.”

You get the picture. Michael is struggling to hold back Diana! Further making “Dirty Diana” the bop it is, besides high-flying vocals, memorable lyrics, and tuneful melodies, is the vibrant production.  Set in a minor key, this is a dark record where the guitars rise to the occasion, particularly the solo by Steve Stevens, and the synths and programming shine. I could sing the praises of “Dirty Diana” forever, but it’s best experienced by listening to the sheer brilliance Michael Jackson laid down on the track.  Again, how did Bad come out essentially empty-handed at the 1988 Grammys?

11. Don Henley, “Dirty Laundry”

I Can’t Stand Still » Don Henley and Past Masters Holdings, LLC » 1982

Grammy-winning rock musician Don Henley has a legitimate point. “It’s interesting when people die / Give us dirty laundry.” Woo!  On “Dirty Laundry”, Henley drops a song for the ages about, well, people honestly.  A standout from his 1982 debut album, I Can’t Stand Still, “Dirty Laundry” peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.  Adding to the accolades, the song was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male at the 25^th Annual Grammy Awards.  So, who and what song did “Dirty Laundry” lose the Grammy to? Oh, one John Mellencamp – “Hurts So Good”.

“Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet?

You know, the boys in the newsroom got a running bet

Get the window on the set!

We need dirty laundry.”

The theme and lyrics are just one of the things that make “Dirty Laundry” awesome.  The production and sound are 1980s to the core, which is incredibly sweet, to be honest. Not only do you get some great guitar riffs, but you also get the boxy drums and rich keys/synths.  Throw in the gang vocals on the chorus, and “Dirty Laundry” is a whole vibe: “Kick ‘em when they’re up / Kick ’em when they’re down / Kick ‘em when they’re up / Kick ‘em when they’re down.” The laundry may be filth but dis song right here – a surefire bop! Can anybody sing “Dirty Laundry” other than Don Henley?
