Yolanda Adams, Open My Heart | Music Lifts

In the 36^th edition of Music Lifts (2026), we’re uplifted by Grammy-winning gospel artist Yolanda Adams performing “Open My Heart.”

Welcome to Music Lifts, featuring songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 36^th edition of Music Lifts (2026), we highlight “Open My Heart,” performed by Yolanda Adams.

The good news, Yolanda Adams (b. 1961), is that you are in the room with the One, G-O-D, who can help and guide you 👏 🙌! “Open My Heart” is the biggest hit of the critically acclaimed gospel singer’s career. It is the seventh track on her 1999 platinum-certified, Grammy-winning album, Mountain High Valley Low. The rare gospel song to impact the pop charts, “Open My Heart” peaked at number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also earned gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.  Adams, Terry Lewis, James Wright, and James Harris III composed “Open My Heart.”  Harris III and Lewis produced it, while Wright co-produced.

“Open My Heart” is a sublime contemporary gospel ballad.  It commences with gorgeous piano accompaniment.  The production is sophisticated and vibrant, including warm keys and strings. Yolanda Adams delivers buttery smooth, reverent lead vocals early on.  The melodies are tuneful, while the lyrics are thoughtful. Adams has a knack for knowing when to pull back and when to dig into her performance. During the second verse, Adams ups the ante, amplified by background vocals. “And I don’t think my strength’s gonna last,” Adams sings, and asserts, “So, I’m crying out, crying out to you / Lord, I know that you’re the only one / Who is able to pull me through.”  The chorus is the crème de la crème – the crowning achievement:

“So, I know I need to talk to you

And ask you for your guidance

Especially today

When my world seems so cloudy, Lord

Guide me until I’m sure

I open up my heart.”

The bridge contrasts the verses with a different harmonic progression.  The theme is the same: “Your will be done, and I’ll be the one / To make sure that it’s carried out.” Adams remains in high-flying mode, as do her background vocals.  The big takeaway from “Open My Heart” is about developing a relationship with God.  One of my favorite scriptures, Philippians 4:13, says it best: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Why not open your heart to God?
