In the spirited column Wacky Wednesday, we analyze and explore unique, unusual, or wacky songs from different genres.  These songs can be new or old; the only requirement is that they ‘catch the ears’ because of their distinctiveness.  With the background established, in the 31^st edition of Wacky Wednesday (2026), we break down the unique “Dirt Man”, performed by Carter Vail. Wacky Wednesday vibes commence!

Carter Vail responds in an interview with Zach Sang. Perhaps it was dumb, as Vail asserts, but the 35-second song, “Dirt Man”, is also infectious and ear-catching. “Keep a little dirt under my pillow for the dirt man / In case he comes to town.” Yup, it’s a vibe, baby! Vail wrote and produced the opener from his 2024 four-song EP, Songs From the Internet.

The bossa nova groove further enhances the vibe – it’s classy and refined. Vail also sings beautifully, in a chill, cool, and easy fashion.  The words may be silly, but Carter brings sophistication. How does the rest of this brief but dirty verse play out?

“Keep a little dirt under my pillow for the dirt man

So, he won’t take me down

To his lair deep under the mountain (What are you talking about?)

Underground, that’s where he keeps his dirt.”

Again, silly, but irresistible.  Notably, Carter Vails is much tamer on “Dirt Man” compared to his other bite-sized Songs From The Internet (“Aliens Ain’t Shit”, “Fuck Up Your Shit”, and “Fast as Fuck”). Even sans the f- and s-bombs, “Dirt Man” is the sugar, honey, iced tea.
