Lawrence County, Kentucky in the house! So, let me get this straight, Tyler Childers (b. 1991), my fellow Kentuckian. Uzi is the name of this malligator, which is officially called a Belgian Malinois. And if that wasn’t enough description from the Grammy-winning country singer-songwriter in the first verse of “Dirty Ought Trill”, he adds, memorably, “If you ever get the vibe you wanna fuck around and find / Gib laut.” Woof, woof!

One verse into “Dirty Ought Trill,” the 13^th and final song from Childers’ 2025 album, Snipe Hunter, it’s clear he’s one hell of a songwriter. And in the course of that verse, we never even determined what or who Dirty Ought Trill is! He composed this entertaining record himself, while the legendary Rick Rubin (b. 1963) produced it.

“Dirty Ought Trill” is epic; the first verse solidified that, and there’s plenty more. Musically, a strong groove anchors. There are plenty of colorful and funky music ideas, many of which transcend country music itself.  With music that cooks, Tyler Childers is on autopilot.  A bold, modern outlaw artist, he had us fucking around and finding out early! His voice is magical – it’s that distinct tone, I promise you.  With his instrument, he tells a marvelous story, expressed through intriguing and memorable lyrics, and enhanced by tuneful melodies.  Dirt Ought Trill is a character, specifically a hunter. That’s where that malligator comes into play – the “copperhead man” thing!  In the chorus, the crème de la crème, Childers paints Dirty Ought Trill as one hell of a hunter:

“Ain’t a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill

Huntin’ them white tail ruttin’ on the hill

Throwin’ that lead, layin’ ‘em still

‘Neath the trees when leaves all die.”

Much more could be said about this song, but I’ll keep it to a minimum.  The gang background vocals which recur throughout are a surefire vibe and feel Appalachian through and through.  There is a dynamic instrumental section – it’s always good to let the musicians cook.  All told, “Dirty Ought Trill” kicks ass and takes names, PERIODT!
