In the 95th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on “Don’t Bring Me Down” performed by Electric Light Orchestra.
As the first verse suggests, the guy that Jeff Lynne sings about on “Don’t Bring Me Down” is in a BAD PLACE. He’s allowed this girl to run all over him! In the third verse, he asks, “What happened to the girl I used to know? / You let your mind out somewhere down the road.” In the fifth verse, “You’re looking good, just like a snake in the grass.” Ooh-wee! In the sixth, “You got me shaking, got me running away / You got me crawling up to you every day.” My, my, my! The chorus is the crème de la crème:
“Don’t bring me down
No, no, no, no, no, ooh-ooh-hoo
I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don’t bring me down, down, down, down, down, down.”
Hmm, doesn’t it seem too late for that, Jeff? Just an observation. While this is a questionable situation, there is nothing questionable about “Don’t Bring Me Down.” Lynne delivers a high-energy vocal; he sings with plenty of passion. The melodies are tuneful, while the lyrics are infectious. The production and sound give Jeff and ELO another win. The drums are relentless – groovy to the nth degree. The guitars pack a mean punch. It’s not solely drums and guitars that stand out instrumentally. The colorful keys and synths add the cherry on top! “Don’t Bring Me Down” is the sugar, honey, and iced tea – a surefire 70s rock vibe!
