All genres of music are welcome, ensuring something for every musical taste. In the 82^nd edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on “Dirty Diana ” performed by Michael Jackson.

Ooh-wee, Diana was something else, wasn’t she 👀?! Grammy-winning King of Pop Michael Jackson (1958 – 2009) dominated the 1980s. His three best albums – Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad – were released and/or impacted that decade. “Dirty Diana” is the ninth track on Jackson’s critically acclaimed but historically ‘snubbed,’ diamond-plus certified album, Bad. Bad ultimately won two Grammys (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, awarded to Humberto Gatica and Bruce Swedien, and, two years later, Best Music Video for “Leave Me Alone”), but none in major categories, or for his singing or songwriting. “Dirty Diana” was one of 13 number one hits by Jackson.  It spent one week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, the single was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. “Dirty Diana” was written by Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones (1933 – 2024).

With “Dirty Diana,” Michael Jackson embraced rock… or at least, pop/rock.  Also, The King of Pop is edgier here, with the songwriting. Sure, he’d already been “Bad” earlier in the track list, but Diana is different – willing to do anything! In the first verse, the always expressive and locked-in Jackson sings, memorably, “I’ve been here times before, but I was too blind to see / That you seduce every man, this time, you won’t seduce me.” Women’ll do that… Men too! In the second verse, she’s a groupie: “She waits at backstage doors for those who have prestige / Who promise fortune and fame, a life that’s so carefree.” In the chorus, the crème de la crème, Jackson personifies her, in an incredibly nuanced and spirited fashion:

“Dirty Diana, no

Dirty Diana, no

Dirty Diana, no

Dirty Diana.”

You get the picture. Michael is struggling to hold back Diana! Further making “Dirty Diana” the bop it is, besides high-flying vocals, memorable lyrics, and tuneful melodies, is the vibrant production.  Set in a minor key, this is a dark record where the guitars rise to the occasion, particularly the solo by Steve Stevens, and the synths and programming shine. I could sing the praises of “Dirty Diana” forever, but it’s best experienced by listening to the sheer brilliance Michael Jackson laid down on the track.  Again, how did Bad come out essentially empty-handed at the 1988 Grammys?
