Malcolm Todd (Malcolm Hobert) is quite an intriguing musician. Falling somewhere under the umbrella of alternative music, his fusion of pop, bedroom pop, and R&B is sweet.  He shines on “Earrings,” the brief, opening track from his 2024 mixtape, Sweet Boy. The song peaked in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, which is quite impressive. Todd composed “Earrings” himself.  He produced it with Charlie Ziman. The results are marvelous!

Great drum groove sets the tone on “Earrings.” Soon enough, colorful keys/synths, and bass line join the mix.  The sound can be described as chill, easygoing, bedroom pop vibes. A recurring, hard-hitting drum riff is the sugar, honey, and iced tea. It adds character to this recording.  It’s not all the instruments that bring the excellence. Malcolm Todd shines with his cool, expressive vocals. He manages to be soulful without forcing things. I like his cadence and flow as he sings, particularly in the centerpiece, the chorus, excerpted earlier, and continuing as follows:

“So you think of what to say

Then save it for another day

‘Cause you just never had the heart

Now they just drift further apart.”

“Earrings” is incredibly melodious and memorable lyrically.  Revisiting the musical aspects, the harmonic progression is awesome.  The chorus occurs twice, followed by the bridge (“From you, oh”).  The refrain brings welcome contrast:  “Extra, extra, read all about it / Mac is in his feelings, and he can’t get out of it.” Word! The track concludes memorably, too: “Okay, well, I hope you like my mixtape.” All in all, “Earrings” is quite the scintillating bop from Malcolm Todd. It’s not surprising the song gained a significant amount of steam on the pop charts.  Although brief, it is well-written, well-produced, and well-performed – a surefire bop!
