It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 18th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we dive into “Shake It”, the one-hit wonder by Metro Station.

“But I was thinkin’ of ways to get you stayin’ the night / Your body’s shakin’, tell me how, so I can turn off the lights.”
Oh, snap! Pop/rock band Metro Station earned a multi-platinum hit with “Shake It”, the fourth track from their 2007 self-titled album. “Shake It” peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Metro Station its only top 40 hit.  To be fair, “Seventeen Forever” earned gold certification, but narrowly missed the top 40.  That means, technically, the band composed of Mason Musso, Trace Cyrus, Blake Healy, and Anthony Improgo is a one-hit wonder. The band wrote “Shake It” while S*A*M and Sluggo (Sam Hollander and Dave Katz) produced it.

Trace Cyrus delivers breathy, playful lead vocals during the verses, performed in an undertone. Although the song is not explicit, the sexual innuendo is ripe.  A prime example: “And I was thinkin’ of ways that I could get inside.” Inside of her, of course… Mason Musso digs in, delivering more overt, belted vocals during the pre-, chorus, and post-chorus.  “Now if she does it like this, will you do it like  / Now if she touches like this, will you touch her right back,” Musso asks during the chorus, which concludes with shaking. The post-chorus is simple, but sing-along-able asf: “Uh-shake-shake, shake-shake, uh-shake it.” Notably, the chorus embraces more of the rock, guitar-led sound; the guitar riffs kick ass and take names. Cyrus drops a second verse, keeping it cool (“Your lips tremble, but your eyes are in a straight stare”).  Following more powerful singing by Musso during the chorus sections, Trace and Mason trade vocals during the bridge.  I love the effect of Cyrus’ more poised vocals and Musso’s punchier pipes. Did Metro Station deserve another hit? Maybe, but “Shake It” gave them a memorable moment we’re still talking about nearly two decades later.
