So, without further ado, let’s get behind the girls on this girl-centric sequel, shall we?!

1. Harry Styles, “American Girls”
Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. » Erskine Records Limited / Columbia Records » 2026
“American Girls” begins with a noisy, distorted, oscillating sound effect. That sound effect is followed by reverb-heavy piano chords. Soon enough, a robust bass line and a drum groove provide stability. Harry Styles delivers lovely, easygoing vocals during both verses. Interestingly, nationality is less important than marriage and relationships, and the challenges and triumphs that go along with it. “‘Cause time will show / That you should try it,” he sings in the first verse, and adds, “Those American girls / You spend your life with.” He rises to the occasion during the centerpiece, the chorus (excerpted earlier), singing with full-throated vocals in his upper register.
“‘I’ve known you for ages,’ it’s all that I’ve heard
My friends are in love with American girls
I’ve seen it in stages all over the world
My friends are in love with American girls.”
The production and sound in the briefer second verse is developed even more, with more synths and some thoughtful tweaks to the groove. Meanwhile, the lyrics are sparer (“Her sweet eyes / Your temptations / Don’t deny / Her frustrations”). Later, I love the brief instrumental break showcasing the vibrant synths. Of course, the big-time chorus returns, in all its glory, to conclude “American Girls.” Following “Aperture” on Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. is a tall task. “American Girls” was clearly up for it as Harry Styles delivered another G-E-M.

2. John Summit & Feid, “CHICA 305”
CTRL ESCAPE » Experts Only / Darkroom Records » 2026
The party vibes are turned all the way up on “CHICA 305.” Feid brings the heat with his smooth, exuberant, and energetic vocal performance. His melodies are tuneful. While the lyrics are exclusively in Spanish, even if you don’t understand a lick, they are still engrossing to the nth degree. See the refrain:
“Quiero quedarme contigo esta noche
[I want to stay with you tonight] Tómate un chorro y no importa si no me conoces [Have a drink—it doesn’t matter if you don’t know me] Tú y yo bien encendío’ nos vamo’ pa’l bote [You and I are really fired up—let’s head to the club] En Miami hay bebés y sos un bebesote [There are babes in Miami, and you’re a total hottie].”
Initiate party mode! Summit’s high-flying musical backdrop and production match Feid’s energy. The palette is vibrant, featuring an array of sounds. The grooves groove hard, while the synths sizzle, particularly the darker, edgier ones. The brass ups the ante, characteristic of Latin music through and through. Ultimately, John Summit, you handsome, talented fella, you dropped another banger with “CHICA 305”. The clubs are singing your praises… even more so if you keep taking off your shirt! Ooh-wee 😍!

3. Doechii, “girl, get up.” (Ft. SZA)
“girl, get up.” » Top Dawg Entertainment, LLC / UMG Recordings, Inc. » 2025
“Girl, get up.” thrives on its sweet, rhythmic percussive groove. That is one key moment where the sample shines. The sound has a chill, contemporary R&B and hip-hop vibe. Matching the sound of the musical accompaniment, Doechii drops fire with her easygoing, agile flow. “Life is but a dream for a dark skin bitch like me / Life gets dark when you’re dark like me,” she spits, and later adds, carefree, “I don’t read y’all tweets, I delete y’all threads.” As bold and potent as she is, she still sounds like she never breaks a sweat. SZA brings incredibly cool vocals during the chorus. Her melisma is to die for.
“I be in the back, levitatin’
Doin’ meditation, leave me, girl, get up
Pickin’ on non-confrontation
Fuck a limitation, leave me, girl, get up
Somehow, I know that I’ll have everything, it’s mine
Mine, mine.”
The second verse by Doechii has a bit more bite, but the Grammy-winner still keeps relatively cool “All that industry plant shit whack / I see it on the blogs, I see you in the chats,” she bites, and continues, “You suck every rap nigga dick from the back.” Ooh-wee! In another sharp moment, she asserts, “And y’all can’t fathom that I earned this chart.” Facts! The third verse finds Doechii continuing to bring the heat over the relaxed, mellow backdrop. As she has with all of the verses, Doechii starts things off with a bang: “They callin’ me the intellect amongst the pussy rap / I still be poppin’ pussy, them my sisters, so I can’t agree with that / These niggas misogynistic, I’ll address that on the album / For now, let’s sink into the fact that hate don’t make you powerful.” Gah-day-um! All told, Doechii, assisted by SZA ate and left no crumbs on “girl, get up.”, No cap!

4. Laufey, “Lover Girl”
A Matter of Time: The Final Hour » Vingoff Recordings / AWAL Recordings America, Inc. »
“Lover Girl” is like a little slice of heaven. Laufey delivers expressive, nuanced, and incredibly refined vocals. She doesn’t sound as if she breaks a sweat. Her phrasing is impeccable. She masterfully brings the melodies to life, in all their tuneful glory. Likewise, the songwriting is superb. “Twenty-seven days alone / Means twenty million ways to cope without you,” she sings in the first verse. The crème de la crème should come as no surprise: the chorus.
“I’m in a reckless fever, love-struck girl, I’d tease her
Thought I’d never be her
Quite the job you’ve done on me, sir
You’ve been hosting parties in my mind
I’m working overtime to have you in my world
Oh, what a curse it is to be in love.”
The bridge distinguishes itself from everything else and is another high-flying moment for Laufey. “I wait by the phone like a high school movie / Dream at the shows, you’ll come runnin’ to me,” she admits, backed by the dreamlike, lush backdrop, and continues, “Think I see you in the wings, God / I’m hallucinating.” Wow! Beyond the marvelous singing, striking melodies, and memorable lyrics, the production and musical accompaniment are utterly sublime. The jazzy, retro, and traditional pop cues sound refreshing; never anachronistic. The percussive, bossa nova groove is electrifying. There are also alternative pop vibes that showcase Laufey’s musicianship and versatility. All told, “Lover Girl” slaps… in the most elegant and sophisticated way possible.

5. Isaia Huron, “this girl wants everything”
Mr. Lovebomb » RCA Records / SLANG / ITOLA LLC » 2026
“This girl wants everything” features a soulful, sophisticated, grown-and-sexy musical accompaniment. The sounds are lush and hearken back to the R&B of old, with some jazz music cues as well. The harmonic progression is more varied than some of the R&B you hear in the 2020s as well. The musicianship is on point. That includes the vocals of Isaia Huron, who has a beautiful tone and marvelously brings the melodies and lyrics to life. Speaking of the lyrics, that is the one element of “This girl wants everything” that is not particularly old-school. Huron is fine with dropping the n-word throughout the second verse (“Niggas get the chills when you walk by / And you handle ‘em all with ease, yeah, uh,” and “But always knew exactly how to get what you want from a nigga, don’t you?”). He makes his point loud and clear, as this girl knows how to work her magic, if that’s the right word. The moment to beat is the chorus, which sums up this girl’s power over him:
“This girl wants everything
Not a little, but everything
She depend on me for everything, oh
This one wants everything
Like a wedding ring, and for me to change
But she’ll never do it, no.”
Even though she’s high maintenance, on the bridge, Isaia makes it known, “I don’t want no one else providing for you / And I’ma show you.” Mr. Huron drops an enjoyable, well-rounded neo-soul gem with “This girl wants everything”. It’s classy, but it still has some stank.

6. KATSEYE, “Internet Girl”
“Internet Girl” » HYBE UMG LLC » 2026
There is a lot to love about “Internet Girl.” The musical accompaniment shines. It begins with the banging, rhythmic drum programming. Additionally, the rhythmic, noisy musical cues add personality. The gimmickry bodes in the song’s favor. This gimmickry includes the infectious titular lyric, which recurs throughout. “Haven’t you heard? I’m the internet girl / Every picture of me is ‘Oh my god, it’s her.” Oh, snap! Acknowledging that they’re ‘her,’ Lara asserts, “Yeah, it isn’t my fault that it’s always my turn.” Beyond consistently embracing being the internet girl, there’s also the unforgettable “Eat zucchini, eat zucchini / Do you read me? Like an emoji?” Ooh-wee! Besides the irresistibly delicious lyrics, the melodies are memorable – incredibly tuneful. The captivating vocal harmonies blend sublimely over the busy, hyper-rhythmic backdrop. All told, “Internet Girl” Is a super catchy, incredibly fun K-pop bop that you won’t be able to get unstuck from your head.

9. LU KALA, “Pretty Girl Era”
No Tears On This Ride » LVK / Amigo » 2025
“Pretty Girl Era” features a fabulous, danceable beat, fitting for a pretty girl! Overall, this pop cut is well-produced with Dr. Luke working behind the boards. The sound isn’t brand-new (Luke has been doing Luke things for a while), but it is highly effective with its sunny-sounding vibes. LU KALA sings confidently and brings plenty of personality to the track. She shines in the rhythmic, tuneful melodies during the verses. “Wake up gorgeous every morning / I’ma put a ring on it,” she sings in the first verse, adding, “Fourteen karats, horse and carriage / Cinderella, I’m that bitch.” Woo! In the second, she confidently asserts, “Giving sassy, giving body / Wanna give myself a bow,” adding, “Drippin’ head to toe / Sexy, yeah I know.” The chorus, highlighted earlier, is fabulous. Ultimately, “Pretty Girl Era” is a two-and-a-half-minute, surefire vibe. Yes, LU KALA is feeling herself, but in an empowering, positive way. There is nothing wrong with loving and uplifting yourself, particularly those of us riddled with self-esteem issues. Speak that pretty girl or pretty boy era into existence 🙌!

10. Ruben, “Girlfriend”
“Girlfriend” » Markussen Music / Warner Music Norway AS » 2025
The good news is, once more, Ruben drops a bomb song with “Girlfriend.” Yes, he’s reaching by trying to turn this hetero dude homo, but it’s a compelling narrative. “I get a feeling sometimes /… To tell you how I’ve been feeling,” he sings in the first verse, adding, “But you’ve got a girl that sounds like / Heaven on crack, singing along to Fleetwood Mac / But I could serenade you, bent back at the laundromat.” Truthfully, Ruben could sing to you, dude – he has the voice of an angel! Anyways, if you are the G in LGBTQ (could be other letters, too), there is little doubt that you have experienced the same feelings as our Norwegian musician. Ruben’s tactics are extreme but give him credit for a Herculean effort! See the chorus:
“Put on a skirt, let it ride high
Sing your name like a lullaby
All the things that your girl won’t do
I’d cross that line if you asked me to
And baby, I could be your girlfriend.”
A skirt, Ruben? Damn, you really got the hots for him, don’t you? He admits to feeling guilty, singing, “You don’t know how it kills me.” True. Many gays have been forced to hold lots of things in, including their sexuality, so adding a straight boy crush is just another hardship, damn it! But, Mr. Markussen, thanks for your vulnerability to deliver another, undeniable pop bop! The situation may be shitty, but “Girlfriend” is the shit! #SLAY 💅!

11. Megan Thee Stallion, “Otaku Hot Girl”
MEGAN: ACT II » Hot Girl Productions LLC » 2024
As always, Megan Thee Stallion is fierce on “Otaku Hot Girl.” She wows with her compelling, fast-paced cadence and flow. Beyond the infectious chorus, Thee Stallion eats in the verses. “Niggas bow down when I pop out like Sakuna / Eatin’ these rap bitches, that get me booted up,” she asserts in the first verse, and continues, “Switchin’ my flow up, it feel like it’s two of us / If I let Tina [Snow] out, that’s a coup de grâce.” Oh, snap! Tina Snow reappears near the end of the first verse, where Thee Stallion confirms, “Everybody know Tina Snow is the mack.” The second verse is a sight to behold as well: “I’m the sensei or the senpai, the one hoes wanna be just like /Ass still on Texas, but my waist in a European size.” And, for good measure, Megan states, “Hoes want my technique, couldn’t be like me with a Sasuke sharingan.” Even as Megan Thee Stallion nerds out with Anime references, “Otaku Hot Girl” is another badass rap banger from her catalog.

12. Edwyn Collins, “A Girl Like You”
Gorgeous George » Edwyn Collins » 1994
“A Girl Like You” slaps. The 1994 alternative pop/rock song features a 1960s-inspired sound. There are vintage, soulful vibes. It’s not Motown, but Motown/soul adjacent. “Girl” is anchored by an electrifying groove. Beyond the groove, colorful keys, warm vibraphone, fuzzy guitar, and a big, fat bass line add to the ear candy. Edwyn Collins delivers an expressive, nuanced, and well-rounded vocal. His tone is delightful, amplified by his charming Scottish accent. The melody is tuneful and hypnotic, while the lyrics are incredibly memorable. “Here you come a-knocking, knocking on my door / And I’ve never met a girl like you before,” he sings in the first verse. In the second, he adds, “You gave me just a taste, so I want more / Now my hands are bleeding, and my knees are raw.” The chorus, excerpted earlier, is the crème de la crème. Beyond those verses and the chorus, there is a pre-chorus (following the second verse), a third verse (“Too many protest singers / Not enough protest songs”), and an outro that is “alright” with Collins and me, too. A bop and a half, “A Girl Like You” is an unforgettable ‘90s classic that I wish I had written and performed. Edwyn Collins ate and left no crumbs whatsoever!

13. Little Richard, “The Girl Can’t Help It”
The Very Best Of… Little Richard » Specialty / Concord » 2008
“The Girl Can’t Help It” is magical for many reasons beyond its infectious lyrics. The opening saxophone sounds set the tone. It is unique, resembling a car engine revving. Beyond that gritty blowing, there is a jungle-like, pummeling drum groove. The musical accompaniment is locked in and turned up, fueling Little Richard’s fire. Of course, our flamboyant, gifted, early rock and roll star is on autopilot. He delivers assertive, gritty, personality-laden vocals. Given his dynamic performance, it sounds like he’s going to break the mic (in the most positive, 1950s way possible). He gets an awesome assist courtesy of background vocals responding to his powerful call (“She can’t help it, the girl can’t help it”). Following a signature howl, the listener is treated to a marvelously mean tenor saxophone solo by Lee Allen (1927 – 1994). The way he digs in matches the energy of everything else that goes down on this high-flying oldie. Although it was released in 1956, “The Girl Can’t Help It” remains fresh and timeless well into the 21st century. Fergie smartly sampled it in her 2006 hit, “Clumsy”.
