It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 23rd edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we dive into “Laffy Taffy”, the one-hit wonder by D4L.

“Girl, shake that laffy taffy, that laffy taffy / That laffy taffy, that laffy taffy (Candy girl).”
Woo! Atlanta-based rap collective D4L (Down for Life), composed of Fabo, Shawty Lo (1976 – 2016), Mook B, and Stoney (Stuntman), cemented their musical legacy with the ubiquitous hit, “Laffy Taffy”. “Laffy Taffy” marked the group’s debut single and appeared as the second track on their only album, Down for Life, released in 2005. In early 2006, it replaced Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us” at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.  This multiplatinum single would be D4L’s only top 40 hit, cementing their one-hit wonder status (“Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me” was certified gold, however). “Laffy Taffy” was written by Fabo, Mook B, Stoney, Born Immaculate, Broderick Thompson Smith, K-Rab, Maurice Starr, and Michael Jonzun. Notably, it samples the 1983 New Edition classic, “Candy Girl”. Born Immaculate, Broderick Thompson Smith, and K-Rab produced it.

Meanwhile, Fabo sets the tone about “That laffy taffy, that laffy taffy.” The candy he has in mind is the booty.  The chorus, excerpted earlier in all of its ass-shaking glory, follows, anchored by the sub-bass of the 808s. “Laffy Taffy” maintains its skeletal sound during the verses, with the drum programming serving as the primary accompaniment at times.  It works effectively as the rappers eat up the beat! Fabo draws first blood, memorably rapping:

“Oh, I’m lookin’ for Mrs. Bubble Gum, I’m Mr. Chick-O-Stick

I wanna dun-dun-dun, oh, ‘cause you so thick

Girls call me Jolly Rancher, oh, ‘cause I stay so hard

You can suck me for a long time, oh my God.”

Oh, d-d-dick 🤭! Stoney/Stuntman takes the reins in the second verse, following the infectious chorus. “Laffy taffy I’m likin’ this / Big ole ass you shakin’ bitch,” he spits, naughtily, and continues, “Close yo mouth and don’t say shit / Bend on ova and hit a split.” D-d-damn! Mook B takes the third verse where he asserts, “I got a hundred ones / I wanna po’ on you / Just keep that ass shakin’ / And I keep tippin’ you.” And for good measure, he concludes, “You made it skeet-skeet-skeet / Like a water hose.” Filthy! Shawty Lo, RIP, takes the fourth and final verse, concluding, “I’ma get that laffy taffy, toss it, flip it, and slap it / Bust a couple of nuts and get right back at it.” Honesty is the best policy, though sometimes, we divulge too much… such as Shawty Lo’s transparency about ejaculating… All told, “Laffy Taffy” remains an awesome rap banger.  This was their only claim to fame, but it set the mid-2000s on fire, NO CAP! And to this day, will we ever think of Laffy Taffy the same?
