One could argue that the multifaceted blackbear (Mat Musto) only experienced moderate success with his 2019 album, ANONYMOUS.  Even so, the well wasn’t dry in the least, as post-ANONYMOUS, Musto earned a hit with the single, “Hot Girl Bummer.” Depending on who you ask, “Hot Girl Bummer” was one of the worst songs of 2019.  That said, from my end of things, it didn’t earn a spot on 11 of the Absolute Worst Songs of 2019. Unsurprisingly, while the fire is hot, ‘bear drops another single with commercial potential, “Me & ur ghost.”

Up-tempo, energetic pop cut “Me & ur ghost” commences with the chorus, which is pretty catchy from the jump.  Furthermore, it sets the tone for the feelings that blackbear is experiencing:

“I’m not alone, it’s just me and your ghost
And this cripplin’ depression
I thought I learned my lesson
But I threw out my phone
And I burned all your clothes
And now I’m not alone
It’s just me and your ghost.”

Following the chorus, blackbear delivers a short first verse, where he’s basically ‘mad as hell,’ destroying his ex-girlfriend’s belongings: “I got four red bottoms, up in flames now / I burned three Chanel dresses, three words we don’t say now.” Sigh seems like a waste of money burning that stuff.  Anyways, the second verse is wordier, with more of a pop-rap approach.  Furthermore, it’s more regretful: “I can’t even kick it with the homies that we both know / I can’t even fuck with any places that we used to go…” On the bridge, he tries to erase it all – “Burn it all to the ground with your ghost.”

Final Thoughts

Blackbear may be overdramatic, but he’s definitely relatable on “Me & ur ghost.” Many times, most of us want to destroy something that’s painful, particularly a failed relationship.  That’s the big takeaway, period.  Blackbear is certainly true to self, and while he doesn’t reinvent himself, heartbreak, or scorn, it’s enjoyable all in all.
