Frank Ocean, Bad Religion | Beaming with Pride

In the 79^th edition of Beaming with Pride (2026), we highlight “Bad Religion,” performed by Grammy-winning R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean.

So, without further ado, in the 79^th edition of Beaming with Pride (2026), we highlight “Bad Religion” performed by Frank Ocean.

Clearly, Frank Ocean (Christopher Breaux) needed someone to talk to, and his cab driver played the role of therapist on “Bad Religion.” The arrival point of the cab ride – unimportant.  “Bad Religion” is a highlight from Ocean’s Grammy-winning, gold-certified, 2012 debut album, channel Orange. Frank Ocean, Bruce Waynne (Waynne Nugent), Dirty Swift (Kevin Risto), Monte Neuble, and Charlie Gambetta composed this R&B ballad about unrequited love.  Ocean, Malay (James Ryan Ho), and Om’Mas Keith produced it.  Frank’s expressive voice and the production, composed of piano, organ, and strings, are divine.

“Bad Religion” is thrilling from start to finish. Is religion the focal point? Nope! In the pre-chorus, his driver asserts, “Allahu akbar,” adding, “Bobo, you need prayer.” Ocean responds in the centerpiece, the chorus:

“If it brings me to my knees

It’s a bad religion

Ooh, ooh, this unrequited love

To me, it’s nothin’ but a one-man cult

And cyanide in my Styrofoam cup

I can never make him love me

Never make him love me.”

This is all about one-sided, aka unrequited love.  In the bridge, Ocean repeats the phrase, “love me,” over and over, for emphasis.  Sexuality has already crept into the mix in the chorus, with Ocean being in love with him.  But he addresses it in the second verse: “I can’t tell you the truth about my disguise / I can’t trust no one.” In the outro, he concludes, “It’s a bad, it’s a bad religion / To be in love with someone who could never love you (Ooh).” Unrequited love is not a happy place, regardless of sexuality. Interestingly, during his channel Orange album cycle, Ocean came out as bisexual, which was a big deal, particularly in the R&B/hip-hop world. “Bad Religion” is nothing short of awesome.
