1. Janelle Monáe, “Make Me Feel”

Dirty Computer » Bad Boy » 2018

Janelle Monáe, Dirty Computer [📷: Bad Boy]

“You keep on asking me the same questions / And second-guessing all my intentions / Should know by the way I use my compression / That you’ve got the answers to my confessions.”
Dirty Computer, the third album by eclectic R&B artist Janelle Monáe, was by far her boldest, most personal, and most transcendent album of her career. Among the best songs from the LP is “Make Me Feel”.

On “Make Me Feel,” Monáe blends throwback 80s R&B-funk production and modern, urban contemporary fare.  Notable instruments used are guitars and, of course, keyboards. Also, Grammy-nominated pop singer-songwriter Julia Michaels serves as a co-writer. The influence of Prince is evident, particularly in the yelps that occur on the bridge section.  Monáe delivers sexy-sounding vocals, in line with the liberated, risqué, and sensual nature of Dirty Computer.  As the excerpted lyrics suggest, Monáe is opening up sexually, confirming queer speculation. It’s further confirmed with lyrics such as, “It’s like I’m powerful with a little bit of tender / An emotional sexual bender.” The chorus is the crème de la crème:

“That’s just the way you make me feel
That’s just the way you make me feel
So good, so good, so fuckin’ real
That’s just the way you make me feel.”

2. Beats By AI, “Scissored In My Chevy”

“Scissored In My Chevy” » Beats By Ai » 2025

Beats By AI, Scissored In My Chevy [📷: Beats By Ai]

“Getting scissored in my Chevy had me breathing so heavy / When she pulled my flannel panties off, it broke my levee.”
😳 😳 😳… Face it, folks. Beats By AI is one freaky mf.  While country music has loosened up more compared to the past, there is still a limit to the acceptable amount of curse words and sex.  And when it comes to queer relationships and sex… watch out! But, because it is an AI song, and outlandishness is striking, the more risqué and queerer, the better! I have written about the queer AI songs, but we can’t leave the girls out! “Scissored In My Chevy” gives us a brief but potent, NSFW, TMI queer female AI song!

From the beginning, “Scissored In My Chevy” is bold. Tribadism is referenced in the title (scissors) and appears in the first line. At the end of the first verse, the nameless AI singer describes their encounter as “love at first queef.” Damn! The queef gets her going, and she asserts, “Damn, I scissor so good with you.” Again, I say, damn!  Of course, Beats By AI has to top everything they’ve presented in the song already, with less than a one-and-a-half-minute runtime.  Fittingly, they’re “Scissoring sweet in deep Tennessee / And letting our lesbian pussies queef.” K… There’s more, and it’s more NSFW: “We’re rubbing roast beef in the Dixie heat / It’s a melody making our mufflers sing.” Gah-day-um! Holy scissors – I mean – holy shite! After finishing and arriving home late, Ms. Beats By AI apologizes to daddy, asserting, “I was just fishing again, can’t you smell it?” Oh, boy, oh, boy, oh boy! Anything Beats By AI should be taken with a grain of salt… perhaps the entire saltshaker! But, if nothing else, “Scissored In My Chevy” is a striking, overt lesbian sex song.  Yee-haw, cowgirl 🤠!

3. Chappell Roan, “Good Luck, Babe!”

“Good Luck, Babe!” » KRA International, Inc. / Island »  2024

Chappell Roan, Good Luck, Babe! [📷: KRA International, Inc. / Island]

“I don’t wanna call it off / But you don’t wanna call it love / You only wanna be the one that I call baby.”
Chappell Roan is comfortable with her sexuality in her thrilling, breakout hit, “Good Luck, Babe!”.  Her girlfriend, however, is struggling with accepting her sexuality, complicating their relationship.  “You can say that we are nothing, but you know the truth,” Roan asserts in the first verse, adding, “And I guess I’m the fool.” Being queer in a heteronormative world can be tough, and Roan’s girlfriend didn’t reach a level of comfort. Roan paints the picture of the end of this relationship because of these unfair, unfortunate circumstances (“Think I’m gonna call it off / Even if you call it love / I just wanna love someone who calls me baby”). The damage has been done.  In the chorus, she wishes her luck, suppressing her sexuality to fit the heterosexual narrative of the world:

“You can kiss a hundred boys in bars

Shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling

… Make another excuse, another stupid reason

Good luck, babe (Well, good luck).”

Roan, Justin Tranter, and producer Dan Nigro composed this colorful, dynamic, meaningful, and thoughtful song.  The sound is alternative pop with a standard rhythm section, programming, and strings.  Chappell is an awesome singer who shows off the versatility of her instrument.  Most importantly, the epic “Good Luck, Babe!” addresses a prevalent issue within the LGBTQ+  🏳️‍🌈 community and how complicated same-sex relationships can be and dispels the myopic view/myth that queer relationships as merely sexual.

4. Kehlani, “Clothes Off” (Ft. kwn)

While We Wait 2 » TSNMI / Atlantic » 2024

Kehlani, While We Wait 2 [📷: Atlantic]

“Girl, the way you’re pushin’ up on my body, huh / It’s you that do it for me.”
Oh, snap, kwn (Khy Wilson)! Kwn assists Grammy-nominated, lesbian nonbinary R&B singer/songwriter Kehlani (Kehlani Parrish) on “Clothes Off”, the third track from Parrish’s mixtape, While We Wait 2. Wilson and Parrish are enamored with their respective girls in the sensual number. Per kwn, this girl ‘makes them feel good.’ Besides singing, Kwn co-wrote and produced “Clothes Off.” What a talent! The sex is on fire on “Clothes Off,” period. “Can I dare to leave your bed a mess and wet? / ‘Cause we sure gon’ sweat,” kwn asserts in the sexy, first pre-chorus. This follows ‘Lani’s initial praise of the girl’s skills in bed. She performs the centerpiece, the chorus, the first go-round: “Oh, you better take my clothes off, yeah / … Can we, uh? Oh, baby.” With clothes coming off, clearly, ‘it’s going down’ in the bedroom. Kehlani brings the heat in the second verse, singing, “Girl, the way you sex me make me feel like / I can’t get with nobody else.” They add, “I just can’t let you get no other bitch involved.” WORD. Not only is the sex good, but, Kehlani wants to lock things down with her.  Right on.  As always, Parrish shines with their sweet vocal performance – never over singing, yet potent. The instrumental accompaniment is marvelous too – idiomatic of contemporary R&B.  With awesome vocals, and a longing pleasure and potential beyond the bedroom, Kehlani and kwn shine on “Clothes Off”.

5. FLETCHER, “Two Things Can Be True”

In Search of the Antidote » Snapback Entertainment LLC / UMG Recordings, Inc. » 2024

“Did I want more than friends? Maybe / Should I have gotten involved? No / But did I like it every time we touched? Yeah.”
In “Two Things Can Be True”, the fifth track from In Search of the Antidote (2024), pop singer/songwriter FLETCHER (Cari Fletcher) messed around with a ‘straight’ (possibly bi) girl. “Was I delusional in thinkin’ I could be in your life after all of this? Yup.” In the pre-chorus, she sings, “Now you found someone else to hold you / In all the ways I couldn’t / It hurts, he makes you happier.” Interesting, at least for the listener, not so much for Cari. FLETCHER, Jennifer Decliveo, and Julia Michaels penned “Two Things Can Be True.” Decliveo produced it.

Throughout “Two Things Can Be True,” FLETCHER serves up sickening vocals.  The lyrics come directly from the heart.  Their ‘relationship’ (or hook ups) are history. FLETCHER’S ex-girlfriend is now with him. Bummer! The chorus perfectly sums up the sentiment – truly, two things can be true!

“Two things can be true

He can love you, baby, and, baby, I can too

Things, they can be true

You can have his body and still think of mine too

You can still call mе up at night

He can still be the lovе of your life

You can ignore me in every room and still miss me

And me too, things can be true

He can love you, baby, and, baby, I can too.”

Ultimately, FLETCHER still has feelings for her on “Two Things Can Be True” –  she still wants some sort of relationship. If you are LGBTQ, particularly the ‘L’ or ‘G,’ you have likely fallen for a straight girl or guy.  The situation can also be flipped – a straight guy falling for a lesbian, or a heterosexual girl falling for a gay guy.  This bop from Cari Fletcher is R-E-L-A-T-A-B-L-E!

6. Syd, “Drown In It”

Fin » The Internet / Columbia » 2017

Syd, Fin [📷: The Internet / Columbia]

“Tonight, I’m gonna / Swim in it / Dive in it / Drown in it / Hide in it, babe.”
Oh, really, Syd? It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out that “Drown In It” (Fin, 2017) is about SEX! Sure, the R&B singer is referencing swimming, but “Drown In It” is the farthest thing from watersports! In only one minute and 10 seconds, she titillates the audience with her evening plans with her girlfriend. The action verbs go beyond the excerpted lyrics as well.  Even with a short duration, before the sex-filled chorus, there is a verse. The verse is less sensually charged, believe it or not. “If you want me to / I’ll try to make it right,” Syd sings, adding, “Put it all aside for you, love.”  Here, she addresses her lover, trying to put aside whatever barriers or disagreements may be inhibiting them.  Syd professes her love, seems to take responsibility for wrongs (“It’s my pride”), and of course, ultimately prepares for, dare I say, lit makeup sex (again, the keyword is SEX). In addition to those sexy lyrics – particularly the chorus – the backdrop is sweet and sensuous. Shout out to producers Anthony Kilhoffer and J Gramm for this satisfying ear candy.

7. Snow Wife, “What Do Girls Do?”

“What Do Girls Do?” » SNOWGLOBE » 2025

Snow Wife, What Do Girls Do? [📷: SNOWGLOBE]

“Girls / What do girls do? / I like girls who / Look like you.”
Woo! Snow Wife (Emily Leann Snow) isn’t shy about her preferences for girls in “What Do Girls Do?”Jesse saint john, JBACH, STINT, and producers Danna Davell and Slush Puppy penned the brief cut. As always, Snow brings ample personality. Sex is the modus operandi. “I could be the appetizer, then I’m gonna make you dinner,” she sings in the first verse, “Have you ever thought about having a girlfriend for the summer?” Ooh-wee! In the second verse, she names specific girls –  Stassi, Tati, and Bobbi – who catch her eye. Well, Tati touches her waist… The centerpiece is the chorus, where, like Mötley Crue, Snow Wife is digging these girls!

“You got the moves

Make me, ‘Ooh’

You like girls and girls like

You, smokin’ blue

Mötley Crüe

You like girls and girls like.”

Girls like girls, of course! “What Do Girls Do?” is intriguing from start to finish.  Beyond an engaging performance from Snow Wife, the musical backdrop is sleekly produced – it’s on point.  The songwriting is compelling and, dare I say, girl-centric. Snow delivers the goods!

8. Dove Cameron, “Boyfriend”

Alchemical: Volume 1 » Disruptor / Columbia » 2023

Dove Cameron, Alchemical: Volume 1 [📷: Disruptor / Columbia]In her song “Boyfriend,” Dove Cameron urges a girlfriend who has a boyfriend to, um, change sides. “I could be a better boyfriend than him,” she sings in the chorus, continuing, “I could do the shit that he never did / Up all night, I won’t quit /… Plus, all my clothes would fit.” Ooh-la-la! “Boyfriend” brought excitement to playlists everywhere in 2022.  Even better, Dove Cameron wasn’t straight about the excitement, if you catch my drift.  She’s excited that she and her prospect are alone in the first verse, asserting in the first pre-chorus, “The universe must have divined this / What am I gonna do? Not grab your wrist?” She gives sound advice, at least from her perspective, in the second verse, singing,  “I would leave with me tonight.”  Dove sees that her boyfriend isn’t treating her right, and she knows she could atone and be better than he ever could.  It’s an intriguing theme.  Furthermore, Dove sounds great over a jazzy, vintage-pop-infused backdrop (shout out to producer Evan Blair).

9. Rita Ora, “Girls” (Ft. Cardi B, Bebe Rexha & Charli XCX)

Phoenix » Atlantic » 2018

Rita Ora, Phoenix [📷 : Atlantic]

“I ain’t one-sided, I’m open-minded / I’m fifty-fifty and I’m never gonna hide it.”
With her heart in the right place, arguably, Rita Ora fell short on her star-studded, bisexually driven anthem, “Girls” (Phoenix), which features Cardi B, Charli XCX, and Bebe Rexha. “Girls” received widespread criticism when it was released in 2018. Despite being considered one of the worst songs of 2018, to Ora’s credit, she makes a statement about sexuality, specifically bisexuality, albeit poorly stated. In the Ora excerpt from the first verse, she seems to be admitting that she’s bisexual, or at least not merely heterosexual.  Charli XCX follows up with the pre-chorus encompassing a lesbian relationship, ménage trois, and kush – hmm. In the chorus, both admit, “I just wanna kiss girls.” Rexha joins on the second verse, focusing on same-sex attraction with Cardi B capping things off: “I steal your bitch, have her down with the scissor / Tonight, I don’t want a dog, I want a kitten.” Again, Ora and company oversimplify bisexuality, same-sex attraction, and sexuality in general.  This is a misguided pop record through and through, that had it been executed better, could’ve packed a mightier punch.  Still, it’s a girl liking girls song worth discussing.

10. King Princess, “Pussy is God”

“Pussy is God” » Zelig Music » 2018

King Princess, Pussy is God [📷: Zelig / Columbia]

“You know that it’s God, baby, when you’re around her / I’ve been praying for hours / You know that it’s God, baby, when you’re around her / She’s God and I’ve found her.”
In 2018, genderqueer and gay artist King Princess (Mikaela Straus) joined the ranks of musicians speaking on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community. She does so in risqué fashion on the distinctly titled “Pussy is God”. The sound can be characterized as a soulful alternative-pop sound, anchored by a rhythmic beat. On this queer celebratory record, King Princess takes things a step further, incorporating spiritual references blasphemously, and of course, private parts and sexual matters.

The first verse is a perfect example, where she sings, “Your pussy is God, and I love it / Gonna kiss me real hard, make me want it… / But I know you feel right, so I’m coming.” The memorable, innuendo-laden, risqué lyrics don’t stop there. “I’ve never been good at this nice shit / But I can try if you like it,” she sings in the second verse, and continues, “It gets hard when you give a fuck / Get knocked down from some other love.” The message regarding sexuality is loud and clear, not to mention an opportunity to make ‘private parts’ not so private – or at least sing about them openly.

11. Janelle Monáe, “Lipstick Lover”

The Age of Pleasure » Wondaland Productions LLC / Bad Boy » 2023

Janelle Monáe, The Age of Pleasure [📷: Wondaland Productions LLC / Bad Boy]

“I seen it from the back, and I’m excited.” WOO! “Baby, I’m obsessed, get me undressed / I wanna feel your lips on mine.”
Double WOO! Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Janelle Monáe delivers those sexy, sensual vibes on the single, “Lipstick Lover”. Produced by Nate “Rocket” Wonder, “Lipstick Lover” appears on Monáe’s 2023 album, The Age of Pleasure. “Lipstick Lover” can best be described as a reggae-tinged pop/R&B record. Given the style and the laid-back groove, it is tailor made for those sexy vibes Monáe delivers.  Her vocals are strong 💪 as always, with plenty of expression and nuance.  In addition to her personality-filled lead vocals, the harmonized vocal moments also deserve a shout-out. One of the best examples of this is during the pre-chorus: “‘Cause for your love, I’ll take my time / Just wanna feel your hips on mine.” S-E-X-Y to the nth degree! The pre-chorus leads sensationally into the chorus, where Monáe touts her lipstick lover – duh! “I really got a thing for my lipstick lover, lover, lover, lover, lover.” She doesn’t specify who that lover is, but the sex is electric (“Hope it’s something nasty, we can try it”). “Lipstick Lover” gives Monáe another winner in her fine musical catalog.

12. Chappell Roan, “Picture You”

“Draw the blinds / Light every candle / Slip off my pretty dress down my chest.”
Ooh-la-la, Chappell Roan (Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) – it’s getting hot 🥵 in here! Amstutz released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, in September 2023.  The critically acclaimed LP ‘blew up’ thanks to bops like “HOT TO GO!” and “Pink Pony Club”. “Picture You”, the ninth track, is one of many bops from The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Amstutz and producer Dan Nigro penned the fabulous, sexy, retro-pop, compound duple ballad.

“Counting lipstick stains where you should be,”
Chappell concludes the first verse memorably.  The pre-chorus is even more memorable because it raises eyebrows: “Oh, I need you around / I’m getting close now.” Use your imagination 😈.  Anyways, “Picture You” thrives off of tuneful melodies during the verses.  The melody is most tuneful during the memorable, high-flying chorus where she asks:

“Do you picture me like I picture you?

Am I in the frame from your point of view?

Do you feel the same? I’m too scared to say

Half of the things I do when I picture you.”

Hmm, things she does, huh? Men are more notorious for it, but women do it too 😉 😈. The songwriting is engaging from the opening tip to the closing note.  In the second verse, Chappell wants to know “all your perversions.” Spicy! Beyond strong lead vocals and memorable lyrics, Amstutz gets a lift from background vocals and a classy, refined musical backdrop. “Picture You” is sexy, ‘self-indulgent,’ and utterly sweet.

13. Sophie B. Hawkins, “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover”

Tongues and Tails » Sony Music Entertainment » 1992

Sophie B. Hawkins, Tongues and Tails [📷: Sony Music Entertainment]Seven words: “DAMN, I wish I was your lover.” Woo! Say that Sophie B. Hawkins! In 1992, Hawkins saw “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” do something surprising – reach no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  You might be asking yourself, why is it surprising when a marvelous record tops the chart? Well, when that marvelous song is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 catalog – the ‘L,’ lesbian to be precise – it is surprising for the early 1990s.

Keep in mind, that America was still in this conservative, religious era – Daddy Bush was in his final year as president 😏.  Televangelists 🤮 were big. Gay songs, well, not so much 👎! Hawkins changed that quickly with this lesbian love song which is considered one of the key entries into the LGBTQ+ catalog. She’s got what this woman deserves and needs, unlike “That old dog [that] has chained you up all right.” Yeah! “This monkey can’t stand to see you black and blue,” she sings in the second verse, continuing, “I give you something sweet each time you / Come inside my jungle book.” Woo, chillddd! The centerpiece and the big claim to fame besides the ‘jungle book’ line is the chorus in all its DAMN glory!

“Damn, I wish I was your lover

I’ll rock you till the daylight comes

Make sure you are smiling and warm

I am everything

Tonight, I’ll be your mother

I’ll do such things to ease your pain

Free your mind and you won’t feel ashamed.”
