Honestly, “It’s about damn time” we swore a little bit for the sake of a playlist 🤬! The swear word of choice is a baby swear… DAMN.  That’s right, 🎧 13 Dayum Good Damn Songs focuses on slightly offensive, four-letter word. By the way, no euphemisms allowed, damn it 😆!  Of course, damn can be spiced up, particularly if you’re like a couple of artists on this musical compendium that add god in front of it and break a commandment in the process 😬 😈. All for the sake of art – the music – so, it can be repented for and forgiven later, right? We hope 🤞!

🎧 13 Dayum Good Damn Songs features music courtesy of 🎙 AUDREY NUNA, 🎙 Fujii Kaze, 🎙 Kip Moore, 🎙 Harry Strange, and 🎙 Lizzo, among others.  A number of music genres get love on this list including alternative, country, dance, J-Pop, pop, rap, R&B, and singer/songwriter. So, without further ado, let’s get right into these dayum good damn songs, shall we?!

1. Lizzo, “About Damn Time”

💿 Special 🏷 Nice Life / Atlantic • 📅 2022

Lizzo, Special [📷: Nice Life / Atlantic]“It’s bad bitch o’clock, yeah, it’s thick-thirty / I’ve been through a lot, but I’m still flirty (Okay).” WOO! 🎵 “About Damn Time” was easily a top-five track from 2022. Ultimately, the no. 1 Billboard Hot hit won 🎙 Lizzo the 🏆 Grammy for Record Of The Year. “About Damn Time” benefits from magnificent production (🎛 Blake Slatkin and Ricky Reed) constructed with rhythm guitar, robust bassline, and a killer groove. The sound has a retro quality – think old-school R&B. This backdrop Lizzo, who, from the onset, is confident AF.  It is her attitude and high-flying vocals that make “About Damn Time” the hit that it is.  The chorus is incredibly catchy, led by that damn good titular lyric.  Also, what about that switch to rap in the second verse, which provides contrast? Furthermore, the bridge/outro is fun AF (“I’m coming out tonight” with its “oohs”). Ultimately, Lizzo ‘comes through’ on this  fun, groovy ear worm that unsurprisingly received ample radio rotation and streams.

2. Kip Moore, “Damn Love”

💿 Damn Love 🏷 UMG Recordings, Inc. • 📅 2023

Kip Moore, Damn Love [📷: UMG Recordings, Inc.]“Got you fakin’ that smile / But you can’t let go of her hand.” Country singer 🎙 Kip Moore perfectly characterizes love, the universal four-letter word which incites varying emotions on his single, 🎵 “Damn Love”.  “Damn Love” serves as the promo single and opener for Kip’s fifth studio album, also titled, 💿 Damn Love.  “Damn Love” was written by 🎼 ✍ Jason McNair, Jaren Johnson, and Jason Gant.  Johnson and Moore produce the love-centric joint.

While the songwriting exceptionally captures the sheer chaos and elation that love can bring, maybe what’s more interesting is the sound of the record.  Initially, “Damn Love” does not sound like a country song.  That is more commonplace with the genre incorporating cues and musical influences from various styles, but initially listening, I questioned, when does the ‘country’ enter the picture.  Sure enough, we get those guitars which instill that country edge, not to mention those gritty, nuanced vocals of Kip Moore.  Something that always shined about Moore’s voice is the coarse nature – it is incredibly expressive.  Moore sounds strong throughout with the centerpiece, the chorus, being where his bread is most buttered:

“Oh, no you can’t tell it nothing

Oh, it’s that strong kind of something

For the bees, for the birds

No surprise, it’s a four letter word

It’ll heal, it’ll kill, it’ll hurt

I hope you’re tough

Damn love.”

All in all, “Damn Love” marks another solid record from the country standout.

3. Taylor Swift, “‘Tis The Damn Season”

💿 Evermore 🏷 Taylor Swift • 📅 2020

Taylor Swift, evermore [📷: Taylor Swift]“So, we could call it even / You could call me ‘babe for the weekend / ‘Tis the damn season, write this down.”  Intriguing, 🎙 Taylor Swift, intriguing.  Interestingly, at one point, Swift would write songs sans swear words.  However, with the release of 💿 Folklore in 2020, Swift joined numerous other artists by embracing cursing.  It continued on 💿 Evermore where the 🏆 Grammy-winning musician asserts, 🎵 “‘Tis the damn season.” ‘Tis the Damn season indeed, and no way to escape it with that assertive song title!

Besides a title that bears attitude (and the d-word), the backdrop of “‘Tis the Damn Season” has attitude as well.  That assertive sound includes the ripe tone of guitars, and later, punchy snare drum.  Still, within the context of Evermore, Swift, as well as her background, never gets overblown or overwrought.  There’s always ‘cool energy’ that cooks but never scorches.  The chorus excerpted above is awesome with Swift providing the right amount of juice. It continues, “I’m stayin’ at my parents’ house / And the road not taken looks real good now / And it always leads to you and my hometown.” Well, ‘day-um’… The verses are alluring thanks to the descriptive nature of the lyrics, telling a narrative related to Dorothea in the context of evermore.

4. Marc E. Bassy, “god damn, god damn”

🎵 “god damn, god damn” • 🏷 New Gold Metal • 📅 2023

Marc E. Bassy, "god damn, god damn" [📷: New Gold Metal]“Goddamn, Goddamn / You play your cards close to your chest ‘til the final hand / Goddamn / You had me thinking I was the man.” Clearly, 🎙 Marc E. Bassy was NOT the man, or so he sings on his colorful single, 🎵 “god damn, god damn”.  The chorus is the best part, with Bassy expressing that his lady, whom HE was cheating on, also cheated on his cheating @$$! Of course, it’s his own fault. During an interlude that prefaces the second verse, Bassy asserts, “You know the craziest part is, I fucked up first. And she found out, but she didn’t tell me that she found out.” Gah-day-um! Bassy continues singing in the chorus, which precedes the interlude, “It taste a little bitter in my cup / The high ain’t feeling quite the same / Told me two could always play that game, yeah, yeah.” Basically, the player got played on this scandalous but highly entertaining pop/R&B song. Bassy sounds great on the chorus (the timbre in the verses is different but unique), while the production –  🎛 Alex Hau, Mike Woods, and Ian McDonald – is a major selling point.

5. AUDREY NUNA, “damn Right”

💿 a liquid breakfast DELUXE 🏷 Arista • 📅 2022

AUDREY NUNA, A Liquid Breakfast Deluxe [📷: Arista]“Yeah, one-two fleeka, you wanna pop my speakers / Three, two, three, better blow ya momma’s teeth out.” WOO! Holy shiitake mushrooms, 🎙 AUDREY NUNA (aka HOLY SHEE-IT)! The rapper/R&B singer comes off fierce AF on her single, 🎵 “damn Right”, which appears on her 2021 album, 💿 a liquid breakfast (a deluxe version arrived in 2022).  Does NUNA seem to care or be pressed about the shee-it? Nope, not in the least. She delivers her fair share of intriguing one-liners throughout this banger. “And I did post, but I’m alone, rich off catfish like Petco,” she asserts in the second verse, later adding, “Goddamn it, ain’t even a party without you flexin’ that Murakami.” Say what? There is also the third verse where NUNA states, “I clap like religion, move like snakes when I make my decision / Bye, bye, bye, better watch the precision / Wanna be me, but you got no ambition.” What is more fitting than saying, DAY-UM! Of course, AUDREY also brings the day-um to the chorus: “What you want? (What you want?) / Everybody knows my name, what you want /… Everybody talkin’ shit, and they damn right…” Think of “damn Right” as an enjoyable, utterly unapologetic flex fest.  Also, shout out to 🎛 Nate Donmoyer for that kick-@$$  production (the beat, the synths, the aesthetic).

6. Harry Strange, “god damn shame”

💿 What a God Damn Shame (EP) 🏷 Harry Strange • 📅 2023

Harry Strange, What A God Damn Shame (EP) [📷: Harry Strange]“What a god damn shame.” Wow! What a bold (and profane) statement, 🎙 Harry Strange.  According to Strange, he makes music for “gays guys girls & all in between.” Cool! Focusing on the gay POV, he drops a surefire bop with 🎵 “god damn shame”.  The two-and-a-half minute cut fittingly appears as the second track (and title track) on his four-song, 2023 EP, 💿 What a God Damn Shame.  If nothing else, Strange serves up plenty of relatable emotion, whether your straight as an arrow, or, queer AF.

“Cut me down just a little bit / Come back round, say you’re missing it,” Strange sings following the first verse, adding, “Break my heart / Yeah, you break my heart.” Ah, those pesky matters of the heart are what fuel this god damn shame he proceeds to sing about.  More evidence arrives in the second verse, where Strange masterfully illustrates his partner (or former partner’s) weaknesses:

“All of the times I picked up the phone

To call you but you’re never home

You say that you see the best part of me

But you’re speechless when I ask you to speak.”

Damn! More like, god damn, of course.  Strong language from Harry Strange but clearly, love, or the lack of love, will make you cuss something fierce.  Beyond the lyrics, Strange sings well, while the production (🎛 Jamie Clarke) and sound are #Winning.  Also, shout out the EP cover art, which is, well, giving those gay vibes, too.  All told, Strange might be singing about a god damn shame, but there is nothing shameful about 🎵 “god damn shame” as a song.

7. Fujii Kaze, “damn”

💿 LOVE ALL SERVE ALL 🏷 Universal Music LLC • 📅 2022

Fujii Kaze, LOVE ALL SERVE ALL [📷: Universal Music LLC]“Tho I shouldn’t give a flying shit about it / Tho I absolutely have nothing to do with it / Then why do I have to care this much about it.” Woo! Sometimes, you just don’t give a flying shit or a D-A-M-N!  From the onset, 🎵 “damn” is a damn good song by 🎙 Fujii Kaze – WOO! It appears as the lucky number seventh track on the handsome 😍 Japanese artist’s 2022 album, 💿 LOVE ALL SERVE ALL.  The production is a selling point (🎛 Yaffle), thanks to its infectious groove (🎙 Shumsuke Uehara plays a danceable, kick-heavy beat), Wurlitzer/keys (Kaze), guitar (🎙 Sho Ogawa), and bass (🎙 Takumi Katsuya).

Most of the lyrics on “damn” are in Japanese, including the lyrics excerpted earlier! However, the centerpiece, that final, damn catchy chorus, is performed in English.  Kaze sings, profanely, “Damn, damn, don’t give a damn / Just love in my head / (Hey little father won’t u come with me) / We’ll just dancing away / From bullshits ahead…” Again, I say, WOO! Kaze sounds incredibly enthusiastic during this section, as well as the other choruses that precede, delivering a memorable melody and some sensational ad-libs. Given the fierceness of this damn song, J-pop definitely deserves far more attention and love!

8. Adam Melchor, “What a Damn Shame”

🎵 “What a Damn Shame” • 🏷 R&R Digital / Warner • 📅 2021

Adam Melchor, “What a Damn Shame” [📷: R&R Digital, Warner]“What a damn shame when it won’t go right / What a damn shame to waste a good shirt on a bad night.” Agreed, 🎙 Adam Melchor. 🎵 “What a Damn Shame” is a ‘damn good’ song.  Melchor penned and produced the record alongside 🎼 ✍ 🎛 Dark Waves. “What a Damn Shame” ticks all boxes.  Melchor is a fine vocalist, singing with authenticity and expression.  Furthermore, the vocal production is  ‘damn sweet’ as is the songwriting the crowning achievement. I heart the references to clothing, as well as more clever references to, say Frank Sinatra that evolve from singing about clothing: “I heard Sinatra wouldn’t be caught dead without a suit / Well, I know ‘m not him / My hair’s more curly and my eyes a little less blue.”  Furthermore, tying intriguing verses together is the centerpiece – the chorus.  We get to curse (lightly) as we sing along to these fun lyrics (excerpted above).  The final piece of the pie is the production, which is #WINNING too.  There’s an alternative pop/rock sensibility which seems to play to Melchor’s strengths.

9. Galantis x David Guetta x MNEK, “Damn (You’ve Got Me Saying)”

🎵 Damn (You’ve Got Me Saying) • 🏷 Big Beat • 🗓 2022

Galantis x David Guetta x MNEK, “Damn (You’ve Got Me Saying)”[📷: Big Beat]“And there ain’t no way I’m gettin’ you back / You got me sayin’ / Damn!” WOO – #baby swear word 🤬!!! 🎵 “Damn (You’ve Got Me Saying)” is set in a minor key, but there’s nothing downright malicious, damn it 😁! The record features the exuberant, nuanced vocals of 🎙 MNEK. It’s safe to say, he totally #SLAYS.  His best moments come on the centerpiece… the main course – the infectious, spirited chorus.  Here, MNEK asserts, “Damn, I shouldn’t have let you walk right out my life (Uh) / I shoulda treated you right / I shoulda been by your side.” Uh-oh! DAMN, those pesky matters of the heart always provide the fuel for a great song, and in this case, it’s a surefire dance-pop bop! Backtracking, MNEK messed up with his ex-lover, and he regrets it terribly, admitting, in the first verse, “It drives me crazy to see you move on / While I lay alone in my bed.” Oh, snap 🫰!

“Damn (You’ve Got Me Saying)” isn’t all MNEK, despite the fact he’s totally #GIVING! He gets classy, picturesque production courtesy of Swedish DJ/producer 🎙 Galantis (🎙 Christian “Bloodshy” Karlsson) and French DJ/producer, 🎙 David Guetta, who are also credited to this track. Additionally, Galantis and Guetta collab with producers 🎛 Tre Jean-Marie and 🎛 Y3LLO KOALA to assemble this decadent ear candy. MNEK’s love pain ends up being the ultimate listening pleasure – NO CAP 🚫🧢!

10. Alexander Stewart, “Best Damn Thing”

🎵 “Best Damn Thing” • 🏷 Cherrytree • 📅 2018

Alexander Stewart, Best Damn Thing [📷: Cherrytree]In December 2018, then 19-year old Canadian singer/YouTuber 🎙 Alexander Stewart released a ‘damn’ good pop single, 🎵 “Best Damn Thing”. “Best Damn Thing” is chocked-full of excellence including production work characterized by a sick palette including electric piano, thudding kick drum, rhythmic synths, and rhythmic guitars.  While the sound is fresh, it also hearkens back to 80s pop and New Wave.  Even cooler than the production work is Stewart who has a brilliant voice, showcasing incredible versatility. The listener is blessed with his sweet falsetto, compelling middle register, and some exceptional ad-libs and nuances.  Amplifying his compelling case are layered vocals. The songwriting marks another selling point, with “Best Damn Thing” coming off strong from start to finish. The chorus is simply infectious – among the “best damn things” about the record, if you will!

“‘Cause you’re the best damn thing that I’ve ever seen

You’re the best damn thing that I’ve ever had

And I don’t know what I’d do if I ever lose you

‘Cause you’re the best damn thing that I’ve ever had

But I can’t do much if you’re over it

So, tell me what to do

‘Cause I want to be the best damn thing that you’ve had too.”

11. Andy Grammer, “Damn It Feels Good To Be Me”

🎵 “Damn It Feels Good To Be Me” • 🏷 Giant Soul / S-Curve • 📅 2021

Andy Grammer, “Damn It Feels Good To Be Me” (2023) [📷: Giant Soul / S-Curve]Being true to self is the way to go, and nobody – and I mean NOBODY – should ever forget that! Pop singer/songwriter 🎙 Andy Grammer has learned this valuable life lesson. He shares it on the brief, but positive, uplifting record, 🎵 “Damn It Feels Good To Be Me”.  Profanity may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but, in this case, his damn is an exuberant one, coming from a good place.

Before now, Grammer was trying to be/emulate others, which didn’t cut it.  “I said stop tryna be the things that I’m not / Tryna be like everyone else / Tryna fit inside of that box,” he sings in the pre-chorus. He  adds, “Copycatting’s dirty, nothing worse than being thirsty.” Woo! True dat, Andy! Throughout the verses, he serves up marvelous, prudent advice, such as, “You’re only shining when you act yourself” (verse one) and “You don’t start living ‘til you kill that shade” (verse two).  Ultimately, it is the chorus, backed by spirited production (🎛 Jon Levine), that solidifies the sheer excellence of 🎵 “Damn It Feels Good To Be Me”: “I’m no good at being you / My philosophy, damn, it feels good to be me /…Ain’t got nothing left to prove / Man, I’m finally free / Damn, it feels good to be me.” ABSOLUTELY!

12. Sophie B. Hawkins, “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover”

💿 Tongues and Tails 🏷 Sony Music Entertainment • 📅 1992

Sophie B. Hawkins, Tongues and Tails [📷: Sony Music Entertainment]Seven words: “DAMN, I wish I was your lover.” Woo! Say that 🎙 Sophie B. Hawkins! In 1992, Hawkins saw 🎵 “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” do something surprising – reach no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  You might be asking yourself, why is it surprising when a marvelous record tops the chart? Well, when that marvelous song is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ catalog – the ‘L,’ lesbian to be precise – it is surprising for the early 1990s.

Keep in mind, that America was still in this conservative, religious era – Daddy Bush was in his final year as president 😏.  Televangelists 🤮 were big. Gay songs, well, not so much 👎! Hawkins changed that real quick with this lesbian love song which is considered one of the key entries into the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 catalog. She’s got what this woman deserves and needs, unlike “That old dog [that] has chained you up all right.” Yeah! “This monkey can’t stand to see you black and blue,” she sings in the second verse, continuing, “I give you something sweet each time you / Come inside my jungle book.” Woo, chillddd! The centerpiece and the big claim to fame besides the ‘jungle book’ line is the chorus in all its DAMN glory!

“Damn I wish I was your lover

I’ll rock you till the daylight comes

Make sure you are smiling and warm

I am everything

Tonight, I’ll be your mother

I’ll do such things to ease your pain

Free your mind and you won’t feel ashamed.”

13. Aretha Franklin, “So Damn Happy”

💿 So Damn Happy • 🏷 Arista • 📅 2003

Aretha Franklin, So Damn Happy [📷: Arista]“My love / Oh baby, my love / It’s always been you / You make me so damn happy.” You know what makes me so damn happy? Anytime that the Queen of Soul, the late, great 🎙 Aretha Franklin sings.  On 🎵 “So Damn Happy,” the title track from her 2003 album, Franklin can’t let go of the love – she absolutely and utterly adores this man.  In the second verse, she asserts, “You can’t always have what you want / You have to take the bitter with the sweet,” continuing, “I’m a big girl and I know what I want / Three nights in your arms would be / A super treat / Give it to me, baby.” Oh, snap 🫰! Of course, those three nights aren’t going to happen, and Franklin admits in the emotional, spirited chorus, “I got to get over you / Ooh, but it’s so hard / ‘Cause you’re my everything.” It’s damn sad that this so damn happy song doesn’t deliver a happy ending.  Oh well – you win some, you lose some – even if you are THE QUEEN OF SOUL!
