11 Songs Where It’s All Lips 👄, Baby! [📷: Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype; Ali Pazani, Rodolfo Clix from Pexels; Peggy und Marco Lachmann-Anke from Pixabay]11 Songs Where It’s All Lips 👄, Baby! features music courtesy of Charlie Puth, Jaden Hossler, Janelle Monáe, Jessie Ware, and Lil Mama.

“Nothing to do, they can’t trust me / Because I blew it once before…” Name that tune! If you answered, 🎵 “Dick Lips” by 🎙 blink-182, you were correct. Some song title, right? Just for the record, 🎙 Tom DeLonge never sings the titular lyrics on the fifth track from 💿 Dude Ranch. Anyways, dick lips aside, cutting straight to the chase, this playlist is about one body part and one body part only: the LIPS 👄, baby! That’s right 🎧 11 Songs Where It’s All Lips 👄, Baby! focuses on, the L-I-P-S, WOO! Musicians lending their lips 👄 to the cause include 🎙 Charlie Puth (😍, he’s so adorkably cute 😝), Gen-Z standout 🎙 Jaden Hossler, 🎙 Janelle Monáe (get it sis!), 🎙 Jessie Ware, and 🎙 Lil Mama (“Whatchu know ‘bout me?”) among others. All songs on this list hail from the 2000s save for one – the closing cut. Without further ado, or providing spoilers, let’s dive right into these voluptuous lips songs!

1. Janelle Monáe, “Lipstick Lover”

💿 The Age of Pleasure🏷 Wondaland Productions LLC / Bad Boy • 🗓 2023

Janelle Monáe, The Age of Pleasure [📷: Wondaland Productions LLC / Bad Boy]“I seen it from the back, and I’m excited.” WOO! “Baby, I’m obsessed, get me undressed / I wanna feel your lips on mine.” Double WOO! 🏆 Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter 🎙 Janelle Monáe delivers those sexy, sensual vibes on single, 🎵 “Lipstick Lover”. Produced by 🎛 Nate “Rocket” Wonder, “Lipstick Lover” appears on Monáe’s 2023 album, 💿 The Age of Pleasure. “Lipstick Lover” can best be described as reggae-tinged pop/R&B record. Given the style and the laid-back groove, it is tailor made for those sexy vibes Monáe delivers.  Her vocals are strong 💪 as always, with plenty of expression and nuance.  In addition to her personality-filled lead vocals, the harmonized vocal moments also deserve a shout out. One of the best examples of this is during the pre-chorus: “‘Cause for your love, I’ll take my time / Just wanna feel your hips on mine.” S-E-X-Y to the nth degree! The pre-chorus leads sensationally into the chorus where Monáe touts her lipstick lover – duh! “I really got a thing for my lipstick lover, lover, lover, lover, lover.” She doesn’t specify who that lover is, but, clearly, the sex is electric (“Hope it’s something nasty, we can try it”). “Lipstick Lover” gives Monáe another winner in her fine musical catalog.

2. Charlie Puth, “Lipstick”

🎵 “Lipstick” • 🏷 Atlantic • 🗓 2023

Charlie Puth, Lipstick [📷: Atlantic]“We can make it more than rumors / That I’m your man ‘cause I’m your man (Yes).” 🎙 Charlie Puth enters his R&B era with 🎵 “Lipstick”, which commences with a lovely groove with a sensual vibe but ultimately, non troppo (not too much). Puth, 🎛 Happy Perez, and Pop Wansel bring those R&B cues to life via the production. The harmonic progression – the underpinnings – are simple, focusing two chords primarily: tonic and dominant 😉. As far as songwriting, Puth, Happy Perez, and Pop Wansel composed “Lipstick” alongside Jacob Kasher, known for his pen. The lyrics won’t change your life, but they’re entertaining.  The chorus is infectious to the nth  degree, easily getting stuck in your head:

“Come and put your lipstick on my neck and my body (My baby)

Just to show these bitches that you’re mine (Mmh-ooh)

Lipstick on my collar, show ‘em you ain’t no hobby (My baby)

You’re the one who gets it all the time (Ooh-ooh).”

Puth’s vocals are playful. He delivers a ripe falsetto, and floats atop the backdrop. He never breaks a sweat, bringing a cool energy. Also amplifying the energy are vocal harmonies. Notably, the interlude and bridge sections are fun if a bit, um, schmaltzy. Puth spits a bit of game (😏) in the interlude, while the bridge embraces the lips… and sex, of course 😈.  Charlie Puth, who is fit, handsome, and as horny, if not hornier than anybody else, still falls short of a surefire sex symbol.  Still, 🎵 “Lipstick” is moderately sexy and worth spinning.

3. Jessie Ware, “These Lips”

💿 That! Feels Good! 🏷 Universal Music Operations Limited • 📅 2023

Jessie Ware, That! Feels Good! [📷: Universal Music Operations Limited]“If you wanna know the truth, read my lips / ‘Cause they’re telling you to make your move, read my lips.” Facts, 🎙 Jessie Ware 💯! Boy, you betta tell that girl how you feel about her! 🎵 “These Lips” appears as the ninth track on 💿 That! Feels Good!, the fifth studio album by the English singer/songwriter. Quite a talent, Ware is underrated.  Her voice is absolutely amazing on this contemporary disco track, which sounds reminiscent of the 1970s.  Although it hearkens back to the past, “These Lips” doesn’t sound like an anachronism in the least.  With those sultry vocals compelling on the sexy, but tasteful lyrics (“I’ve been waiting for this moment, darling / Feel the heat, it’s getting hot and hot”), “These Lips” is a whole vibe! Besides the vocals, and the songwriting about making a move – taking that next step, starting a relationship – the production is amazing! 🎛 James Ellis Ford outdoes himself playing all of the instruments.  The programming is epic with Ford delivering exuberant horns, lush strings, and superb riffs.  “These Lips” thrives thanks to its classicism, which is refreshing, as  well as the musicianship by Ware and Ford. That, indeed, Feels Good!

4. Maroon 5, “Lips on You”

💿 Red Pill Blues 🏷 Interscope • 📅 2017

Maroon 5, Red Pill Blues [📷: Interscope]🏆 Grammy-winning pop collective 🎙 Maroon 5 has changed dramatically over the years, embracing and infusing ‘trendy pop’ into their music.  Honestly, doesn’t the band feel like more of an 🎙 Adam Levine solo project? That’s a debate or discussion for another day and a different forum. Regardless, 🎵 “Lips on You” is one of those better records from the band’s 2017 album, 💿 Red Pill Blues.  The song was penned Levine, 🎼✍ Jason Evigan, Julia Michaels, Charlie Puth, and Jacob Kasher. Puth also produces. “Lips…” oozes with personality and of course, sex – sounds like a surefire winner, right! It’s well-executed overall, and fits Levine perfectly.

“When I put my lips on you

You feel the shivers go up and down your spine for me

Make you cry for me

When I put my lips on you.”

5. Lil Mama, “Lip Gloss”

💿 VYP – Voice of the Young People 🏷 RCA / JIVE • 📅 2008

Lil Mama, VYP - Voice of the Young People [📷: RCA / Jive]“Whatchu know ‘bout me? Whatchu, whatchu know ‘bout me? / Whatchu know ‘bout me? Whatchu, whatchu know?” Well, if your musical prime is the aughts (2000s), you’ll know the answer is “They say my lip gloss is cool, my lip gloss be poppin’ / I’m standin’ at my locker, and all the boys keep stoppin’.” WOO! 🎙 Lil Mama earned a top-10 pop hit with 🎵 “Lip Gloss,” her debut single from her sole album, 💿 VYP – Voice of the Young People.  “Lip Gloss” was released in 2007, but VYP didn’t arrive until 2008, to the tune of a no. 25 bow on the Billboard 200 👎.  Regardless, Lil Mama secured her big musical moment with “Lip Gloss,” which featured some sick, skeletal production from 🎛 James “Groove” Chambers.  The beat is all that Lil Mama needs to fuel⛽️ the fire 🔥 as she exhibits no shortage of attitude or personality. The chorus is the centerpiece – infectious chorus.  The song is novel, mind you, but admit it, you loved it (and still do) when she raps in the third verse:

“Sittin’ in eight period, though I was in trouble

Dean called me on the loudspeaker on the double

I stepped in her office like ‘Yes, Ms. McClarkson?’

She like, ‘Gurl, I ran out of my lip gloss

And write down where you get yours from.’”

Ooh, wee! We know one thing for sure, it’s POPPIN’!

6. YUNGBLUD, “Strawberry Lipstick” 💄

💿 weird!🏷 Interscope • 🗓 2020

YUNGBLUD, weird! [📷: Interscope]“I’ve got a toxic attitude and lack self-control / A reasonably fucked up individual.” Wow! The brief 🎵 “strawberry lipstick” appears as the third track on 💿 weird!, the 2020 sophomore LP by 🎙 YUNGBLUD (Dominic Harrison). “Strawberry lipstick” grabs your attention the very first time you hear it. “They’re gonna lock me in the closet but I’m coming out,” he later continues in the first verse, adding, “Singing fuck all the oppression and the self-doubt.” Harrison is nonconformist to the nth degree – awesome! His accent is quite prominent throughout and he remains assertive from the jump. While the first verse isn’t particularly melodic, but he makes up for it by the incredibly catchy chorus (“So take it easy, take it easy, take it easy, girl”). On the second verse, the listener gets a better idea of the melodic identity, as well as the memorable line, “She gonna suck on my strawberry lipstick.” Also, adding to the glory and liberation of this track are the dynamic, ‘in your face’ guitars.

7. Meghan Trainor, “Lips Are Movin”

💿 Title 🏷 Epic • 📅 2015

Meghan Trainor, Title [📷: Epic]“If your lips are movin’, then you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby.”  🎵 “Lips Are Movin” was a ubiquitous single from 🏆 Grammy-winner 🎙 Meghan Trainor back in 2015. The record definitely matches the sound and themes of her retro-pop debut album, 💿 Title.  Trainor wrote “Lips Are Movin” alongside 🎼✍ Kevin Kadish, who also produces the track. The script of “Lips Are Movin” is quite similar to the LP’s most dominant cut, 🎵 “All About That Bass”.  The big difference? Lips as opposed to booty, essentially.

“I know you’re lyin’

Cause your lips are movin’

Tell me, do you think I’m dumb?

I might be young, but I ain’t stupid

Talking around in circles with your tongue

I gave you bass, you gave me sweet talk

Saying how I’m your number one

But I know you lie

Cause your lips are movin

Baby don’t you know I’m done?”

Does anymore need to be said? Nope. The 👄 speak for themselves.

8. Jaden Hossler, “LIPS”

💿 Tell Me About Tomorrow 🏷 DTA / Elektra • 📅 2023

Jaden Hossler, Tell Me About Tomorrow [📷: DTA / Elektra]“I don’t wanna hear your lips whisper goodbye / I don’t wanna see the teardrops in your eyes.” Those lyrics from 🎙 Jaden Hossler (Jxdn) scream pop-punk, don’t they? 🎵 “LIPS,” the 22nd track on Hossler’s debut album, 💿 Tell Me About Tomorrow (2021), commences with a dramatic, moody instrumental intro. A bit warmer in sound despite being set in a minor key, soon enough, the angst enters in full force. By the time Hossler sings the pre-chorus for the first time, he performs in an undertone in his lower register. It’s an interesting effect given the intense emotion of the lyrics, not to mention he drops the f-bomb 💣 six times:

“Always fucking with my head

We were fucking in my bed

Don’t know what you fucking said ‘cause I blacked out

Always fucking with my life, ‘cause you always fucking lie

And I wanna fucking die every night now.”

Emo, emo, emo! The second time the pre-chorus occurs, following the second verse, Hossler sings it in his whiny upper register. The majority of “LIPS” is sung in that dynamic, whiny voice, which is part of the charm of style of music.  Written alongside producer 🎛 Travis Barker, “LIPS” is a fun way to conclude Tell Me About Tomorrow.  Maybe not as fun for Jaden though (“Your lips, your lips are perfect / They’re goddamn perfect /… But I’m not worth it”). WOO!

9. Hinder, “Lips of an Angel”

💿 Extreme Behavior 🏷 Universal • 📅 2005

Hinder, Extreme Behavior [📷: Republic]“Honey why you callin’ me so late?” Those are the famous opening lyrics from the 2005 hit single, 🎵 “Lips of an Angel” by rock collective, 🎙 Hinder.  This was the breakthrough song – a rock ballad, mind you – from 💿 Extreme Behavior that ‘put the band on the map.’  Of course, many people ‘hated on’ Hinder back in the day, comparing them to successful if divisive Canadian rock band Nickelback.  Nonetheless, “Lips of an Angel” was difficult to escape – it was incredibly ubiquitous.  Of course, the most irresistible part of the song is none other than the centerpiece, the chorus.  Besides the lyrics and melody here, maybe it’s the masculine, dare I say, sexy vocals of front man 🎙 Austin Winkler, sigh.

“It’s really good to hear your voice

Sayin’ my name, it sounds so sweet

Comin’ from the lips of an angel

Hearin’ those words, it makes me weak

And I never wanna say goodbye

But girl you make it hard to be faithful

With the lips of an angel.”

10. The xx, “Lips”

💿 I See You 🏷 Young Turks • 📅 2017

The xx, I See You [📷: Young Turks]“Just your love / Just your shadow / Just your voice / And my soul”. 🎙 Jamie xx (Jamie Smith), 🎙 Romy Madley Croft, and 🎙 Oliver Sim made up quite the trio as 🎙 The xx. 💿 I See You ranked among the best albums of 2017.  Interestingly, as press time, I See You was the last LP released by the group, with Sim and Croft releasing solo projects. Focusing on the lips 👄, 🎵 “Lips” appears as the third track. It was produced by Jamie xx and 🎛 Rodaidh McDonald. Notably, it samples (lyrically) the 2015 song, 🎵 “Just (After Song of Songs)” by 🎙 David Lang. Croft leads the singing in the first verse of the low-key joint, which packs a punch without breaking a sweat (“My name on your lips / Your air in my lung / Drowned in oxygen”). Sim kicks off the second verse, maintaining the poise of his partner-in-crime:

“Chemistry is rare in a two, three-time affair

There’s no guarantees

Working through the seasons, pressed up against the ceiling

Pushing down on me.”

Ooh wee, Oliver! “Lips” may be cool, floating along, but it’s potent.

11. Brainbombs, “Lipstick on My Dick”

💿 Obey • 🏷 Brainbombs • 📅 1996

Brainbombs, Obey [📷: Brainbombs]“Her mouth around my cock / My gun against her head / Bang! I blow her head off…” Well, gotdamn, 🎙 Brainbombs 😈! Cock-a-doodle-fucking-doo! The Swedish noise rock band is unapologetic AF, if you couldn’t tell from the opening lyrics of 🎵 “Lipstick on My Dick”. Of course, when the song is titled “Lipstick on My Dick,” you know that the artist is thinking with the wrong head! This raunchy rock record, which appears on Brainbombs’1996 album, 💿 Obey, isn’t deep – quite an understatement! 🎙 Peter Råberg and company think with the love stick on this fierce rock cut.

“The police came and took me in
Investigate, visitate and said:
‘You sick fuck
You have lipstick on your dick.’”

No deep, lyrical analysis is necessary beyond those lyrics.  One reason is because repetitive lyrics are one of the characteristics of Brainbombs.  Another reason is because the band is known for its random, obscure approach to lyrics.  Furthermore, the noisiness of the record – those distorted guitars – is part of the charm.  You don’t need poetic lyrics to produce a fierce, noisy brand of rock, do you? 🎵 “Lipstick on My Dick” – now that’s some kind of sh– 🤘!
