Ah, you know what time it is! It’s 3 to 5 BOPS time – WOO! On 3 to 5 BOPS, it’s all about brevity and sweetness… for the most part! There’s a theme/topic, 3, 4, or 5 songs, and a blurb – two paragraphs or less.  3 to 5 BOPS, hence, is a mini playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  In the X edition of 3 to 5 BOPS (2023), we select songs that are associated with LIPSTICK 💄 in some form or fashion. The BOPS arrive courtesy of 🎙 Brainbombs, 🎙 Janelle Monáe, and 🎙 YUNGBLUD. Okay, let’s get into it!

1. Janelle Monáe, “Lipstick Lover”

💿 The Age of Pleasure • 🏷 Wondaland Productions LLC / Bad Boy • 🗓 2023

Janelle Monáe, The Age of Pleasure [📷: Wondaland Productions LLC / Bad Boy]“I seen it from the back, and I’m excited.” WOO! “Baby, I’m obsessed, get me undressed / I wanna feel your lips on mine.” Double WOO! 🏆 Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter 🎙 Janelle Monáe delivers those sexy, sensual vibes on single, 🎵 “Lipstick Lover”. Produced by 🎛 Nate “Rocket” Wonder, “Lipstick Lover” appears on Monáe’s 2023 album, 💿 The Age of Pleasure. “Lipstick Lover” can best be described as reggae-tinged pop/R&B record. Given the style and the laid-back groove, it is tailor made for those sexy vibes Monáe delivers.  Her vocals are strong 💪 as always, with plenty of expression and nuance.  In addition to her personality-filled lead vocals, the harmonized vocal moments also deserve a shout out. One of the best examples of this is during the pre-chorus: “‘Cause for your love, I’ll take my time / Just wanna feel your hips on mine.” S-E-X-Y to the nth degree! The pre-chorus leads sensationally into the chorus where Monáe touts her lipstick lover – duh! “I really got a thing for my lipstick lover, lover, lover, lover, lover.” She doesn’t specify who that lover is, but, clearly, the sex is electric (“Hope it’s something nasty, we can try it”). “Lipstick Lover” gives Monáe another winner in her fine musical catalog.

2. YUNGBLUD, “Strawberry Lipstick” 💄

💿 weird! • 🏷 Interscope • 🗓 2020

YUNGBLUD, weird! [📷 : Interscope]“I’ve got a toxic attitude and lack self-control / A reasonably fucked up individual.” Wow! The brief 🎵 “strawberry lipstick” appears as the third track on 💿 weird!, the 2020 sophomore LP by 🎙 YUNGBLUD (Dominic Harrison). “Strawberry lipstick” grabs your attention the very first time you hear it. “They’re gonna lock me in the closet but I’m coming out,” he later continues in the first verse, adding, “Singing fuck all the oppression and the self-doubt.” Harrison is nonconformist to the nth degree – awesome! His accent is quite prominent throughout and he remains assertive from the jump. While the first verse isn’t particularly melodic, but he makes up for it by the incredibly catchy chorus (“So take it easy, take it easy, take it easy, girl”). On the second verse, the listener gets a better idea of the melodic identity, as well as the memorable line, “She gonna suck on my strawberry lipstick.” Also, adding to the glory and liberation of this track are the dynamic, ‘in your face’ guitars.

3. Brainbombs, “Lipstick on My Dick”

💿 Obey • 🏷 Brainbombs • 📅 1996

Brainbombs, Obey [📷: Brainbombs]“Her mouth around my cock / My gun against her head / Bang! I blow her head off…” Well, gotdamn, 🎙 Brainbombs 😈! Cock-a-doodle-fucking-doo! The Swedish noise rock band is unapologetic AF, if you couldn’t tell from the opening lyrics of 🎵 “Lipstick on My Dick”. Of course, when the song is titled “Lipstick on My Dick,” you know that the artist is thinking with the wrong head! This raunchy rock record, which appears on Brainbombs’1996 album, 💿 Obey, isn’t deep – quite an understatement! 🎙 Peter Råberg and company think with the love stick on this fierce rock cut.

“The police came and took me in
Investigate, visitate and said:
‘You sick fuck
You have lipstick on your dick.’”

No deep, lyrical analysis is necessary beyond those lyrics.  One reason is because repetitive lyrics are one of the characteristics of Brainbombs.  Another reason is because the band is known for its random, obscure approach to lyrics.  Furthermore, the noisiness of the record – those distorted guitars – is part of the charm.  You don’t need poetic lyrics to produce a fierce, noisy brand of rock, do you? 🎵 “Lipstick on My Dick” – now that’s some kind of sh– 🤘!
