It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 28th  edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we dive into “Swear It Again”, the one-hit wonder by Westlife.

“I swore to share your joy and your pain / And I swear it all over again.”
When you swear or swear on something, that is incredibly strong 💪!  When it comes to strength, Irish 🇮🇪 boy band Westlife (Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, and formerly Brian McFadden) flexed fiercely on “Swear It Again”.  “Swear It Again” appeared as the opener from their self-titled 1999 debut album. Also, “Swear” was their debut single. It peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. This marked their ONLY entry on the pop charts in the U.S. Wayne Hector and producer Steve Mac composed “Swear It Again.”

The vocals are pure and beautiful during the first verse.  Following a couple of lines, the production becomes fuller. The sound: smooth, boy band/teen-pop / late 90’s and early ‘00s pop production.  The flavorful backdrop features some of the great touches, including the lush, soaring strings.  Throughout “Swear It Again,” the melodies are radiant and tuneful.  Thematically, matters of the heart fuel the fire.  “I wanna know / Who ever told you I was letting go,” he sings in the first verse, and continues, “Of the only joy that I have ever known / Girl, they’re lying.” Word.  Securing the long-term commitment, in the second verse, the singer states, “‘Cause in your eyes / I see a love that burns eternally / And if you see how beautiful you are to me / You’ll know I’m not lying.” As tasty as the verses are, the chorus is decadent – the crowning achievement.  It’s melodious, memorable, and marvelously performed:

“I’m never gonna say goodbye

‘Cause I never wanna see you cry

I swore to you my love would remain

And I swear it all over again, and I

I’m never gonna treat you bad

‘Cause I never wanna see you sad

I swore to share your joy and your pain

And I swear it all over again.”

Aww, the dedication! The feels! The L-O-V-E!!! Beyond the chorus, the bridge does what it’s intended to do.  It contrasts the verses and choruses, while bridging them, too (“The more I know of you is the more I know I love you / And the more that I’m sure I want you forever and ever more”). All told, Westlife did their big one with this one. “Swear It Again” is a perfect representation of that late ‘90s and early ‘00s boy band aesthetic and sound. Is it a bit cheesy and schmaltzy? Maybe, but that’s a big part of the charm of boy band music! Well, that and the looks 😍.
