The entertaining, hypnotic, and never-rushing “Angel of Light” is quite the scintillating vibe from DIY Atlanta-based soft, sapphic soul musician D’Leesa.
“Angel of Light” pulls you in early on. The easygoing, light electronic backdrop, composed of keys, synths, and an electrifying beat, gives off a cool energy. The accompaniment is rhythmic and set in a minor key. Like her previous single, “Healer”, “Angel of Light” is hypnotic. D’Leesa compels with her chill, soft vocals, which scream bedroom pop vibes. She is cool as a cucumber; she barely breaks a sweat. Strike that – she doesn’t break a sweat! Still, the lyrics and melodies are potent. “Baby girl, I see right through you / Show the world a face that just ain’t true,” she sings in the first verse, and continues, “Beautiful is the soul that lies below.” This angel is putting on a façade of sorts, but D’Leesa sees right through it, as evidenced by the simple yet infectious and memorable chorus.
“You look like an angel of light
But the glint in your eye
Tells me it’s all a disguise
You belong to the night
You look like an angel of light
But the glint in your eye
Tells me it’s all a disguise
Take my hand, show me your other side.”
Although subtlety is the modus operandi, D’Leesa still mixes in some vocal harmonies during the second half of the chorus. Non troppo, of course. In the second verse, she continues to encourage her to show her true self: “Please, girl, just let the mask fall.” In short, the entertaining, hypnotic, and never-rushing “Angel of Light” is quite the scintillating vibe.
