Grammy-nominated, South African-born, Australian artist Troye Sivan takes risks on “She’s the Best,” the lead single and title track from his fourth studio album.
“She’s the Best” features vibrant production, including assertive drums, programming, and ear-catching keys and synths. Exuberant, this ode to women is set in a major key. One of the things that will be off-putting to some is the monotone talk-singing. This is a clear change of pace from Troye Sivan. Even with minimal vocal inflection, personally, I don’t find his delivery boring. The songwriting is intriguing from the get-go, making you listen intently to what he’s saying. See the Exhibit from verse one:
“She’s walkin’ down the street with her little thin cigarette
Great smile and a cum stain on her dress
DJs from Wednesday to Monday
Don’t ask, she’s not taking any fucking requests.”
“Cigarette?” “Cum stain?” No “fucking requests?” A lot is happening halfway through the first verse. The back half of the second verse is quite alluring: “Pretty, funny, can fight / She always knew she had something special in-inside / She takes down an incel on the internet / When she needs just a little unwind.” Word. Sivan does sing during the chorus (“That girl, that girl…”) before speaking, “She’s the best.” I love the background vocals that appear most prominently toward the end. They are performed by Charli xcx: “She’s the heartbeat / She’s the best / She’s the –, she’s the / She’s the best.” Sivan ascends an octave in the chorus near the end, which is a welcome contrast. The musical accompaniment goes H.A.M. at the end, with some punk energy. Charli’s vocals return, in all their glory. “She’s the Best” may not be everybody’s cup of tea, particularly after the Grammy-nominated “Rush”, but personally, I find this to be a captivating song from a fearless artist who isn’t afraid to try new things.
