Can you feel those vibes, those surefire Throwback Vibez?! Throwback Vibez is a recurring column devoted to celebrating incredible songs from the past. There is truly nothing like a classic oldie to energize and put you in a great mood! The selections featured in this column highlight musical gems from the 20th century, though there are occasional exceptions. All genres are welcome, ensuring something for every musical taste. In the 87th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on Candy Girl performed by New Edition.

“My girl’s like candy, a candy treat / She knocks me high up off my feet,”
Ralph Tresvant sings, and continues, “She’s so fine, as can be / I know this girl is meant for me.” At the time Candy Girlwas released, Grammy-nominated R&B collective New Edition comprised Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, and Ronnie Devoe. “Candy Girl” appeared on their 1983 album of the same name. A modest pop hit, it peaked at number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100. It performed much better on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, peaking at number one. “Candy Girl” was written by Michael Jonzun and Maurice Starr.  Starr, Jonzun, and Arthur Baker produced it.

New Edition, Candy Girl [📷: London Records Ltd]“Candy Girl” is sugary-sweet teen R&B/pop. Can you say bubblegum?! The members of the band were either 14 or 15 years young when their debut single/album came along. It’s infectious from a first listen. The percussive groove and ooey-gooey synths and enthusiastic keys shimmer. Following the intro, Ralph Tresvant performs the song’s centerpiece: the chorus!

“Candy girl

You are my world

You look so sweet

You’re a special treat

Candy girl

All I want to say

When you’re with me

You brighten up my day.”

The chorus is memorable and tuneful to the nth degree. Tresvant continues to hold the reins in the first and second verses. “The way you walk, and the way you talk / You always look so good, you make forget my thoughts,” he asserts in the first verse. An inquisitive Ricky Bell interlude is sandwiched between (“Do you really love me? / Do you really care?”). The second chorus is collaborative, between Tresvant, Bell, and Bobby Brown (“I need your love, each and every day”).  A skit follows, including Michael Bivins and Ronnie Devoe for the first time.  Bivins, Brown, Bell, and Tresvant perform the rap, which continues to put the girl on a pedestal. Tresvant reclaims the reins himself in the bridge, joined by Brown and Bell in the outro. New Edition would go on to drop much bigger hits than Candy Girl, but this proved to be a great way to begin a very successful career.
