nnuendo? More like full-on sexual vibes! Welcome to After Dark 🕛 🌃, a column featuring songs that are best suited for nighttime, specifically, the bedroom.  Like Controversial Tunes 😈🎶, the records featured here raise eyebrows.  The difference between the songs of CONTROVERSY and DARK? These songs specifically focus on the universal topic of S-E-X. The dark records gracing After Dark are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.  On the 8th edition of After Dark, we explore the naughty, risqué, scandalous & utterly sexual vibes behind, 🎵 “Bloom” by 🎙 Troye Sivan

Theme & Lyrics

“And it’s true, baby / I’ve been saving this for you, baby.” Hmm, what has 🎙 Troye Sivan been saving for?  The pop musician been honest about his life as an openly gay man, highlighted by his superb debut album, 💿 Blue Neighbourhood.  Notably, he’s pondered if he’d be more success if he weren’t gay. Of course, ultimately, he is gay, and secondly, it’s a big part of his what makes his music distinct and ‘successful’.  He continues showing honesty and openness on 🎵 “Bloom”, the title track from his 💿 2018 sophomore album. On the first verse, Troye begins the trip:

“Take a trip into my garden
I’ve got so much to show ya
The fountains and the waters
Are begging just to know ya.”

Post-first verse, the refrain (excerpted above) provides more perspective as to where Sivan is going – he seems willing to bloom sexually.  The innuendo is ‘through the roof.’ The trip continues the second verse, which is physically charged – stimulatory for sure!

“Put gas into the motor
And boy, I’ll meet you right there
We’ll ride the rollercoaster.”

Gas into the motor? RIDE the rollercoaster? Most ears hear “gas” and “ride” as key words.  These lyrics create speculation regarding the fine details of the sexual experience.  By fine details, I’m referring to Sivan’s sex role within the relationship.  Notably, when reading Thirst Tweets via BuzzFeed, Sivan debunked a tweet about being a bottomPink News further expounds on the shocking revelation about Sivan’s sexual role, given “Bloom” has been labeled a bottoming anthem. AFTER DARK material for sure, right?

Perhaps overshadowed is the emotion of the experience, which separates it from songs merely encompassing empty sex.  On the pre-chorus, he sings, “Hold my hand if I get scared now,” which represents vulnerability, a legitimate emotion associated with losing one’s virginity.  On the chorus, Sivan exhibits dedication to his boyfriend, willing to ‘give it up’ because he truly ‘feels some type of way’ about him.

Final Thoughts 💭

The music video for “Bloom” is intriguing as well, but the crown jewel is the theme and lyrics.  Even in 2018, songs about sexual experiences between men were scarce.  That’s why the LGBTQ+ community was excited about this song.  Honestly, everybody should’ve been excited, hearing about a wide array of experiences even if they contrast your own.
