“I know you f***ing lying!”
Like damn, bruh! Sis! C’mon! You thought it was bound to hit, but instead it was total shit – nothing but dookie 💩!  The songs that appear in The Flops didn’t hit, underperformed, or underwhelmed for a given artist.  Flops are even more detrimental when the artist is considered a superstar and rarely misses the mark. Flops can even be successful, even if the quality sucked. Or maybe they’re not-so-bad, but they bombed on the charts.  Regardless, this is the column to highlight abject failure. In the ninth edition of The Flops (2026), we examine the questionable “Cotton Eye Joe” recorded by Rednex.

“If it hadn’t been for Cotton-Eye Joe / I’d been married a long time ago,”
Göran Danielsson sings, and continues, “Where did you come from? Where did you go? Where did you come from, Cotton-Eye Joe?” Swedish group Rednex delivered a big-time novelty hit with “Cotton Eye Joe.” “Cotton-Eye Joe” itself wasn’t brand-new – it’s a traditional country-folk song. However, Rednex transformed the song into a country/folk/Eurodance fusion, which is W-I-L-D. Fittingly, it opens their 1995 album, Sex & Violins. “Cotton Eye Joe” is a one-hit wonder.  It peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, which is respectable.  The single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Pat Reiniz produced this annoying track.

“Cotton Eye Joe” kicks off with a quick tempo.  It’s energetic from the get-go.  The energy is appreciated, but those repetitive chorus lyrics performed by Göran Danielsson (excerpted earlier) grow old quickly. They seem as if they’ll never end! Soon enough, violin (fiddle-like) enters the mix.  The beat, pardon my French, is so intense that it pummels the shit out of you. It’s a lot! Even beyond the beat, the rhythm is relentless.  Annika Ljungberg contrasts in the first verse with her high-pitched vocals.  Is the contrast a win? Meh, the vocals are also irritating.  “His eyes was his tools, and his smile was his gun,” she sings, and concludes, “But all he had come for was havin’ some fun.” From there, more Göran singing that blasted chorus, again… and again… Annika returns for the second verse, where “He brought disaster wherever he went /… And left only men ‘cause of Cotton-Eye Joe.” Um… sure… whatever.  So, is “Cotton Eye Joe” by Rednex the worst song ever made? No, but it receives plenty of criticism for being annoying. Country and Europop? It’s odd, man!
