ring on the controversy, wonโ€™t you? Controversial Tunes ๐Ÿ˜ˆ๐ŸŽถ is a column that provides background information and insight into songs that raised eyebrows and totally stirred the pot.ย  The records that grace Controversial Tunes are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.ย  On the 35th edition of Controversial Tunes (2021), we explore the controversy behind the song, ๐ŸŽต โ€œHe Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)โ€ by ๐ŸŽ™ The Crystals.

Theme & Lyrics โœย

๐ŸŽต โ€œHe Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)โ€ is a problematic song title โ€“ no way around it.ย  Perhaps had ๐ŸŽ™ The Crystalsโ€™ 1962 classic ended up being metaphorical lyrically (say, the kiss had gargantuan impact like a knockout punch), weโ€™d let the song title slide.ย  The problem is, โ€œHe Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)โ€ is literal, hence, understandable why it raised eyebrows and caused an uproar upon release. Oh, the controversy when abuse conflated with love comes into play! Amazingly, this record came from two of musicโ€™s most elite songwriters, once husband/wife team ๐ŸŽผโœ Carole King and ๐ŸŽผโœ Gerry Goffin.

โ€œHe hit me and it felt like a kiss / He hit me but it didnโ€™t hurt me.โ€ Well, he shouldโ€™ve never put his hands on you, ๐ŸŽ™ Barbara Alston! Sadly, Alston and The Crystals add, โ€œHe couldnโ€™t stand to hear me say / That Iโ€™d been with someone new / And when I told him I had been untrueโ€ฆโ€ Well, we know that he hit her.ย  While the infidelity is a bad look, the hitting part remains problematic.ย  Furthermore, the victims (The Crystals) think itโ€™s okay, blaming themselves for being hit โ€“ โ€œHe hit me and I knew he loved me.โ€ Iโ€™m sorry, but thatโ€™s some total BS!

As troubling as โ€œHe Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)โ€ is to listen to, itโ€™s based on a real-life experience.ย  As the story goes, King/Goffinโ€™s babysitter, singer ๐ŸŽ™ Little Eva, was honest to them about being hit by her boyfriend and rationalizing it as his love for her.ย  Yikes!

Final Thoughts ๐Ÿ’ญย

Bitmoji ImageTo this day, Iโ€™m not sure what the intent of ๐ŸŽต โ€œHe Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)โ€ was.ย  It didnโ€™t fly in the 60s, and certainly doesnโ€™t fly in the age of purported โ€˜cancel culture.โ€™ Hopefully, we avoid records that rationalize abuse in the future.ย  Just not a good idea.
