Smokepurpp & Murda Beatz, 123 © InterscopeRemaining ubiquitous, rising rapper Smokepurpp, alongside Murda Beatz, drops his ‘umpteenth’ new single, “123.” To his credit, he shows some improvement.

Every week, there seems to be a new Smokepurpp single. Safe to say, the up-and-coming rapper stays busy. Working alongside Murda Beatz, he drops “123,” one of his longer offerings. Sure, “123” still doesn’t make the three-minute mark in regards to duration, but it’s nice to see the rapper at least trying to be more profound. A wordy, shallow, explicit hook following an unnecessary intro:

“Okay, 1-2-3, yeah, I just popped a bean / Okay, 4-5-6, yeah, eight hoes on my dick / N***as salty and they hatin’ ‘cause Lil Purpp is young and rich / And my girl got a girl but her tongue got my kids / I just jumped up in that Jag, we smoke woods, not no Zigs / Lil Purpp in high demand, yeah, these verses worth a brick / And she know that I got hoes, but she still gon’ suck my d*ck / All these diamonds on my neck, got the flu, b*tch I’m sick.”

Read the lyrics, and the Smokepurpp continues to be incredibly shallow – what’s new? Nonetheless, he has an excellent beat to rap over, with relatively simple, yet effective production.  Kudos Murda Beatz.  Again, the content itself is surface-level stuff.  On the first verse, he focuses on drugs (partaking and hustling), money, and material things.  The second verse continues with drugs, money, and material desires, as well as incorporating sex, and a reference to exotic/foreign girls.

Final Thoughts

Give Smokepurpp credit for having two verses as opposed to one.  Two-minute songs don’t typically have enough substances to build artistry.  Still, the near-three minutes of “123” isn’t quite enough either. It’s not actually about duration, but the content itself.  Shallow and cliché AF. “123” isn’t a hit from my perspective, but it is a slight improvement.
