ROLE MODEL shines once more on “Joy,” the second single and second track from his third studio album, Chuck Timely & The Hourglass.
“Joy” features some mean-sounding guitars. They are distorted, juicy, and rhythmic. ROLE MODEL serves up well-rounded, nuanced vocals. Firmly in control, he never over-sings or ‘does too much.’ He gets playful with his performance, which includes talk-singing. The storytelling is alluring: “But [Joy] gets away when I need her most / I was having a rough go, just south of the Poconos / Just feeling down on a lonely night / Would’ve offered up a red-eye flight.” Unsurprisingly, the chorus is a big deal – one of the song’s best moments. It features a great catchline: “C-come a little closer.” “Joy” is melodious throughout: tuneful verses and chorus. The bridge section is fun, with the gang vocals (“Count your blessings, one by one…”). Once again, ROLE MODEL brings the goods with “Joy”. Strong vocals, memorable songwriting, and striking production make it a winner.
