1. Elton John & Dua Lipa, “Cold Heart – PNAU Remix”
💿 The Lockdown Sessions • 🏷 Mercury • 🗓 2021
🎵 “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)” kicks 💿 The Lockdown Sessions – the 32nd studio album by iconic musician, 🎙 Elton John – off with a bang! 🎙 PNAU – 🎛 Nicholas Littlemore, 🎛 Sam Littlemore, and 🎛 Peter Mayes – create a transformative remix, period. 🎙 Dua Lipa joins John on a delightful mashup sampling his classic, 🎵 “Sacrifice” and the interpolation of another, 🎵 “Rocket Man”.
From the onset, “Cold Heart” grooves hard. The production is brilliant – colorful, picturesque, and incredibly slick. John is the first voice heard, adorning the warm, groovy backdrop with lyrics from “Sacrifice.” Following verse and pre-chorus, a sublime sounding Lipa enters singing “Rocket Man” creating a super cool effect. I like the way that Lipa’s vocals are layered as “Cold Heart” progresses

2. Dua Lipa, “Cool”
💿 Future Nostalgia • 🏷 Warner • 📅 2020
Following up the electric 🎵 “Don’t Start Now”, the crowning achievement of 💿 Future Nostalgia, is no easy task. 🏆 Grammy-winning pop artist 🎙 Dua Lipa does a bang-up job with “Cool.” There’s nothing cold – at least, in a negative way – about “Cool” which is memorable and well-rounded. It’s an elite number from Dua Lipa.
🎛 Stuart Price and 🎛 TMS give Dua Lipa a colorful backdrop to work with, incorporating the best of pop of old as well as that ‘futuristic’ script. Most notably, she has the personality and pipes to construct a terrific performance. The chorus ranks among the biggest selling points – catchy and energetic AF.
“Got me losin’ all my cool
‘Cause I’m burnin’ up on you
In control of what I do
And I love the way you move
We’ll get the heat and the thrill
Gives you more than any pill
Never runnin’ out of juice
When it’s only me and you
You got me, you got me losin’ all my cool
I guess we’re ready for the summer.”
3. Migos, “Avalanche”
💿 Culture III • 🏷 Quality Control Music • 📅 2021
“Woo, Papa was a rollin’ stone, but now I got rollin’ stones in the bezel (Ice) / Mama at home all alone, hustlin’, tryna keep this shit together (Mama).” Woo indeed 🎙 Quavo! 🎙 Migos get off to a sensational start on 💿 Culture III with 🎵 “Avalanche.” Here, those triplet flows are compelling, with memorable rhymes and one-liners. It’s not all Quavo on this hook-less juggernaut, of course! 🎙 Takeoff and 🎙 Offset get into the action as well on this top tier moment from a lengthy, overstuffed LP.
Besides Migos themselves, arguably, the biggest draw on “Avalanche” is the production (Quavo and 🎛 DJ Durel). 🎙 The Temptations’ 🎵 “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” fuels the fire. This is a sample I never envisioned would be as effective as it is on this trap banger. In this case, the precipitation 🌨❄ – well – it’s lit 🔥!

4. Chris Stapleton, “Cold”
💿 Starting Over • 🏷 Mercury • 📅 2020
“Oh, girl, you know you left this hole / Right here in the middle of my soul.” 🏆 Grammy-winning country musician 🎙 Chris Stapleton shines on 🎵 “Cold,” among the best songs from his fourth studio album, 💿 Starting Over. On this five-minute-plus, gorgeous, minor-key ‘slow burner’, a passionate Stapleton is brokenhearted to the nth degree. “What am I supposed to say / If anybody ask me about you?” he sings on the second verse, adding, “Guess I’ll tell ‘em I’m without you.”
At another point in this heartbroken gem, Mr. Stapleton asserts, this girl “Cut me knife / And put my love on ice.” Man, oh man, I feel that pain! “Cold” is a masterful blend of country and rock, with a dash of soul. Even with its classic touches – classy strings and Hammond B3 – there’s a crossover appeal. You don’t have to love country music to love this one – it stands on its own.
5. The Weeknd, “Snowchild”
💿 After Hours • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2020
With a title like 🎵 “Snowchild,” it should come as no surprise that 🎙 The Weeknd references drug use on this gem from 💿 After Hours. “I was singing notes while my niggas played with six keys / Walking in the snow before I ever made my wrist freeze,” he sings on the reflective first verse.
As evidenced by those lyrics, “Snowchild” is more than drugs, though the 🎙 Dizzy Gillespie line is pretty rad (“I was blowing smoke, had me ‘Dizzy’ like Gillespie”). He explores his childhood, coming up and becoming famous, and of course, drip and sex. It’s another winning moment from After Hours by all means.

6. Omarion, “Icebox”
Ft. Timbaland
💿 21 • 🏷 Sony BMG Music Entertainment • 📅 2006
“Girl, I really wanna work this out cause I’m tired of fighting / And I really hope you still want me the way I want you / I said I really wanna work this out, damn girl I’m trying / It’s no excuse, no excuse.” Sometimes, playlists on The Musical Hype fail to include cuts that arrive prior to 2010. Obviously, pop music didn’t just begin in 2010, but to keep things a bit more ‘in the now,’ the focus is often on some of the newer songs. In this case, we make an exception with an 🎙 Omarion classic, 🎵 “Icebox” (💿 21, 2006). Maybe ‘classic’ is a bit of an overstatement, but in the context of the R&B singer’s discography, “Icebox” ranks at or near the top.
While the pre-chorus is sweet, the most memorable lines from this 🎛 Timbaland-produced joint (alongside 🎛 King Logan and 🎛 Johnkenun Spivery) occur on the chorus. That’s where Omarion sings: “But I got this icebox where my heart used to be / But I got this icebox where my heart used to be.” Timbaland assists as well as he follows O with the lyrics “I’m so cold, I’m so cold, I’m so cold, I’m so cold.” Beyond the memorable lyrics, the chorus is dramatic. One easily believes and relates to how heartbroken the R&B singer is. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a superb backdrop to fuel the fire, sigh.

7. Christian French, “Avalanche”
🎵 “Avalanche” • 🏷 Disruptor / Columbia • 📅 2021
“I thought I’d always love you / But now I can’t / Oh, I started an avalanche.” Indeed, 🎙 Christian French, indeed. The good news, however, is 🎵 “Avalanche”, the pop single, is a surefire bop. Yeah, maybe things are messy in French’s love life, or so the lyrics suggest, but this ‘French’ original right here – fire. So, what makes “Avalanche” a bop? Well, it starts with the authentic, expressive vocal performance. Listening to Christian sing these heartfelt, honest, and reflective lyrics, you buy what he’s selling – believable to the nth degree. Listening to him sing, and reading the lyrics, I can totally visualize and relate to the feelings conveyed.
“These thoughts that started in my head
So cold had a snowball effect
Oh no, I tried, I can’t outrun
The damage is already done.”
When reflecting on the song and his own experiences during a difficult year via IG, it makes sense that he’s giving his all on this record. Beyond the vocals and songwriting dabbling in those matters of the heart – reneging on the love – “Avalanche” benefits from sound, fitting production. Sure, French has unleashed an avalanche, he won’t ‘snow’ on your listening parade… Okay, that made no sense, but what I’m saying is, French delivers ‘the goods’ with “Avalanche.”

8. Run the Jewels, “walking in the snow”
💿 RTJ4 • 🏷 Jewel Runners LLC / BMG Rights Management • 📅 2020
“Just got done walkin’ in the snow / Goddamn, that motherfucker cold,” 🎙 Gangsta Boo spits on the memorable, incredibly potent, and powerful chorus on 🎵 “Walking in the Snow.” “Walking on the Snow” ranks among the crème de la crème of 💿 RTJ4, the fourth studio album by 🎙 Run the Jewels. 🎙 El-P and 🎙 Killer Mike get socially conscious, specifically focusing on racial inequality.
El-P calls out hypocrisy on the first verse: “Pseudo-Christians, y’all indifferent, kids in prison ain’t a sin? Shit / If even one scrap of what Jesus taught connected, you’d feel different.” Killer Mike really goes in on the second verse, sporting contrasting production, spitting, “And you so numb, you watch the cops choke out a man like me / Until my voice goes from a shriek to a whisper, ‘I can’t breathe.’” A collaborative verse between the two rappers is nothing short of awesome.

9. Adele, “Cold Shoulder”
💿 19 • 🏷 XL • 🗓 2008
“You grace me with your cold shoulder / Whenever you look at me, I wish I was her.” I think we all know a little something about a cold shoulder, 🎙 Adele, sigh (more than enough to be honest). When one revisits the debut LP by the 🏆 Grammy award winner, two songs typically come to mind: 🎵 “Chasing Pavements” and 🎵 “Hometown Glory”. That said, our shoulder song at hand, 🎵 “Cold Shoulder,” is another bop from the gifted singer.
“Cold Shoulder” stands out first and foremost thanks to the vocals of Adele – she’s an absolute gift. Typically, we hear her serenading us with balladry. That’s not what goes down on this lushly produced 🎛 Mark Ronson record (those strings, that driving, rhythmic groove!). Adele has some tempo behind her, while still delivering glorious, high-flying, soulful pipes. Adding to the allure of course is this narrative where her ex is totally ignoring her, and she hates it. A prime example occurs in the second verse as she sings, “These days when I see you / You make it look like I’m see-through.” Perhaps the most interesting section of the song from a musical standpoint is the bridge – quite ear-catching.

10. Sabrina Claudio, “Frozen”
💿 About Time • 🏷 SC Entertainment, LLC • 📅 2017
“The flowers will be blooming / The leaves will be turning / And snow will be falling while we’re making love…” Ooh-la-la! If for some reason you haven’t heard rising R&B singer 🎙 Sabrina Claudio is a talented musician that deserves wider recognition. Before releasing her debut album 💿 No Rain, No Flowers in 2018, she dropped a mixtape, 💿 About Time (2017). That’s where our cold, icy triumph, 🎵 “Frozen” hails from.
Claudio delivers silky-smooth, sexy vocals throughout the course of “Frozen.” “Frozen” is a radiant, romantic, and sensual slow jam. Her tone is quite appealing; she sounds breathy, singing with a sense of chill and poise. Even given this approach, Claudio still manages to deliver a sizable punch. Her upper register is gorgeous. The pre-chorus, a key part of the song excerpted above, continues:
“And the sun will be shining
The flowers still are blooming
Then leaves will turn again.”
So, where does the ‘frozen’ part of “Frozen” come into play? Sabrina isn’t singing about literal ice y’all. No, she’s referring to frozen in the context of being at a ‘stand-still.’ This stand-still is positive though, per the chorus: “But time will be frozen for us…”

11. AFI, “Snow Cats”
💿 AFI (The Blood Album) • 🏷 Concord • 📅 2017
“I am not scared enough / Prepared enough / You wanted me in distress / I’ve nothing left to fear / I am, I am here.” Well, that is declaratory 🎙 Davey Havok! The lyrics appear from 🎵 “Snow Cats”, one of the advance singles from 💿 AFI (The Blood Album), the 2017 album by goth-rock vets, 🎙 AFI.
“Snow Cat” commences with a respectable opening with arpeggiated guitar. It features clear vocals by the frontman, who sounds as compelling as ever. AFI, as a band, does a great job of establishing the theatric element of “Snow Cats” early on. Throughout, the use of backing vocals adds a nice touch, particularly on the chorus. The first half of the verses are a bit too spare in production. The second half of the verses are fuller, with the chorus providing atonement. The bridge is heavier as well, distinguishing itself from verses and chorus. All in all, “Snow Cats” is quite enjoyable.
“I’ll wait for you another night
(As you like)
Dressed in Himalayan white
I’ll wait for you some other night
(Dressed as you like)
Dressed in Himalayan white.”

12. Bring Me the Horizon, “Avalanche”
💿 That’s the Spirit • 🏷 Sony • 📅 2015
“It’s like an avalanche, I feel myself go under / ‘Cause the weight of it’s like hands around my neck,” 🎙 Bring Me the Horizon front man 🎙 Oli Sykes sings on the chorus of 🎵 “Avalanche.” He continues on the gigantic chorus of the seventh track from 💿 That’s the Spirit (2015): “I never stood a chance; my heart was frozen over / An’ I feel like I am treadin’ on thin ice.” Naturally, the lyrics of “Avalanche” are associated with the devastating disaster that can potentially kill. Throughout the record, Sykes is clearly in a bad place, evidenced by the ‘chronic’ nature of the lyrics. “And no, it’s not a phase, ‘cause it happens all the times,” he sings on the first verse, while he’s seeking a cure – “an antidote” – on the second verse.
The thing is, why would Oli Sykes be looking for a ‘cure’ for an avalanche? That seems like incorrect terminology. Well, that’s because he’s NOT talking about a literal avalanche – duh! Instead, he’s referencing his condition, ADHD.
“I need a cure for me, ‘cause a square doesn’t fit the circle
Give me a remedy, ‘cause my head wasn’t wired for this world.”

13. James Brown, “Cold Sweat”
💿 Get on the Good Foot • 🏷 UMG Recordings • 📅 1972
“When you kiss me / When you miss me / Hold my hand / Make me understand / I break out – in a cold sweat.” Woo! 🎙 James Brown was a vibe back in the day. Guess what? The late, great icon is still a vibe today! The man had countless hits including the incredibly sweaty 🎵 “Cold Sweat” from his 1972 album, 💿 Get on the Good Foot. The lyrics were always few, but the groove and the ‘funked-up’ arrangements were always on-point. “Cold Sweat, Pt. 1” represents another surefire bop for the Godfather of Soul.
Like most of the feverish, sweaty, temperature songs that grace this list, “Cold Sweat” is about love (and sex). In the first verse, James Brown asserts, “I just want, our love to last,” later adding, “I just want to satisfy your pulse.” Interestingly, in the second verse, he shifts some of the focus to himself, singing, “I don’t care, about the way you treat me darling / I just want, you to understand me, honey.” Also, worth noting, Brown drops an important shout-out to his great saxophonist, 🎙 Maceo Parker.

14. Jet, “Cold Hard Bitch”
💿 Get Born • 🏷 Elektra • 📅 2003
“Cold hard bitch / Just a kiss on the lips / And I was on my knees / I’m waiting, give me…” Give me what – “That is the question!” Woo! Australian rock band 🎙 Jet doesn’t play around on 🎵 “Cold Hard Bitch” – more like, they fuck around (or want to…)! Frontman 🎙 Nic Cester adds on the chorus, “Cold hard bitch / She was shakin’ her hips / So that was all that I need.” The unapologetic record appears as the ninth track on their 2003 debut album, 💿 Get Born. Clearly, the motivation for the guys in Jet are knocking boots, getting some, getting laid – having S-E-X.
Beyond the chorus, the verses are naughty – titillating for sure! In the first verse, Nic claims, “Spent all my rent / Girl, you know I enjoyed it, yeah.” Hmm… we’ll leave that at that. In the second verse, he’s thirsty AF, trying to get her attention, and, in the pre-chorus asserts, “Gonna take her home ‘cause she’s over romancing / Don’t wanna hold hands and talk about our little plans, alright.” Again, “Cold Hard Bitch” has sex written all over it. The problem is, does this hottie that’s being lusted over ‘give’? Doesn’t seem like it…
15. The Chi-Lites, “The Coldest Days of My Life”
💿 A Lonely Man • 🏷 Brunswick Record Corp. • 🗓 1972
“Coldest days of my life / They were the coldest days of my life / I had to run for cover.” My, oh my! Prepare to be sad in the happiest way! That’s right, soul collective 🎙 The Chi-Lites are responsible for one of the greatest, if saddest, soul records of all time. The eight-and-a-half-minute 🎵 “The Coldest Days of My Life” is one of the best, most heartfelt soul songs EVER. Naturally, it’s love that’s messed the fellas up on the ninth and final track from 💿 A Lonely Man (1972).
Despite “The signs of springtime” intact with birds, “Some of us cried / Can’t you see, oh, can’t you see / The tears in my eyes?” The depression is ripe as The Chi-Lites petition God to “Take the pain away” because “… it couldn’t be much worse.” Yikes! The collective even asserts, “It just couldn’t be much worse / Down below / It just couldn’t be that bad.” In hell? That seems to be the case!
