“Soon may the Wellerman come / To bring us sugar and tea and rum / One day, when the tonguin’ is done / We’ll take our leave and go.”
Sometimes, unexpected songs go viral. Scottish singer Nathan Evans (b. 1994) earned a big-time viral hit with “Wellerman – Sea Shanty”. “Wellerman,” which references Wellerman supply ships, is a cover of “Soon May the Wellerman Come”.  Evans’ rendition of the narrative-driven sea shanty was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Nathan Evans excels on “Wellerman – Sea Shanty.” That is an understatement! Evans’ voice sounds marvelous in this a cappella track accompanied by a firm, steady beat.  That beat sets the tone – the percussive foundation.  From there, Evans is the star, impressing with his charming Scottish accent.  He brings the tuneful melodies and memorable lyrics to life. “Before the boat had hit the water, / The whale’s tail came up and caught her.” Oh, snap! Also, that’s a whale of a tale! Evans continues singing in the third verse, “All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her / When she dived down low.” “Wellerman” features six compelling verses, with the chorus (excerpted earlier) following each.  Following the second and fourth choruses, there is an infectious post-chorus: “Da-da, da-da-da-da.”  After the sixth chorus, there is an outro (a repeated chorus).  Infectious to the nth degree, Nathan Evans does his big one on the novel “Wellerman – Sea Shanty”.
