Morgan Wallen, Been By Now | Song Review

Grammy-nominated country musician Morgan Wallen sounds tried and true, but not brand-new, on “Been By Now,” his first solo track of 2026.

Oh, snap! Grammy-nominated, polarizing country singer-songwriter Morgan Wallen said what he said.  Wallen has remained huge in 2026; however, “Been By Now” is his first brand-new solo track.  This song is true to Morgan Wallen. If you’re a fan, you’ll eat it up.  If you are a more casual listener, you may also like it, or at worst, be indifferent to it. “Been By Now” was written by Wallen, Rory Block, John Byron, Blake Pendergrass, Taylor Phillips, and Charlie Handsome.  Joey Moi, Charlie Handsome, and Hank Compton produced it.

“Been By Now” has its pros. Well-produced, it has those smooth contemporary country vibes with pop sensibilities.  The crossover appeal is written all over it.  Morgan Wallen gives a smooth vocal performance.  He can be a messy person, but his vocal talent is undeniable.  His tone here is quite beautiful.  Vocally, he gives us enough pop appeal, with some of that East Tennessee twang.  This is a melodious song, with lyrics that are catchy enough.  “No need to act surprised, I’ve seen it in your eyes / I feel it when we lie here, worlds apart,” he sings in the first verse. Noted, Morgan.  In the second verse, he sings, “If I could go and find the moment or the night / My heart went cold as ice, I’d light the match.” Those matters of the heart – so pesky!  The pre-chorus is a winner, occurring after the first verse, and between the final two choruses.  Of course, the crème de la crème is the unforgettable chorus, in all of its tuneful glory.

Yeah, baby, we’re a breeze when the lights go down

It wouldn’t be so hard when we ain’t in the dark

All in all, “Been By Now” is a pleasant contemporary country song from Morgan Wallen. It wouldn’t be far-fetched for this one to experience ample success. It’s not the second coming, mind you, but on brand for Wallen.
