Guitarricadelafuente, Calypso | Beaming with Pride

In the 66^th edition of Beaming with Pride (2026), we highlight “Calypso” performed by Spanish singer-songwriter Guitarricadelafuente.

So, without further ado, in the 66^th  edition of Beaming with Pride (2026), we highlight “Calypso” performed by Guitarricadelafuente.

Sure, whatever you say, Guitarricadelafuente (Álvaro Lafuente Calvo), you smoking hot 😍, talented fella, you! The Spanish singer-songwriter brings musical goodness with “Calypso”. “Calypso” was written by Calvo, Carter Lang, and Lucas Durán. Calvo, Carter Lang, and Phoac produced it, with co-production by Jasper Harris and Aaron Shadrow.  

“Calypso” runs a tight two-and-a-half minutes long. Even so, this song, performed exclusively in Spanish, is jam-packed. Guitar is naturally part of the accompaniment, in all of its rhythmic glory. There is a very brief introduction before Guitarricadelafuente dives in. He delivers a beautiful vocal performance. “Tú no quieres entender si me arrodillo en el parqué [You refuse to understand when I kneel on the parquet floor],” he sings in the first verse, and concludes, “Yo solo quiero ser tu cómplice [I just want to be your accomplice].” His falsetto is ripe during the estribillo [chorus].  The chorus, which occurs twice in “Calypso,” is varied each time. A groove settles in during this section, too.

“Nadie se atreve a poner la cara [No one dares to show their face]

Rompe el vestido y después me llamas [Tear the dress and then call me]

He vuelto a aparecer en la gran pantalla [I’ve reappeared on the big screen]

Solo quiero desvanecerme contigo en esta playa [I just want to fade away with you on this beach].”

A mellotron (or what sounds like it) appears during the second verse where, “Veinte cuchillos mortales en la pared de mi cuarto / Me quiero morir cuando sales, tú quieres vivir pa’ contarlo [Twenty deadly knives on my bedroom wall / I want to die when you leave; you want to live to tell the tale].” 😳 A faster beat provides contrasts beginning with the next lines: “Falta el espíritu y me siento solo en el lavabo /Bendita juventud; es un regalo envenena’o.” Those lyrics, when translated into English, are dramatic, intriguing, and poetic, at least to some extent: “The spirit is missing, and I feel alone in the bathroom / Blessed youth; it’s a poisoned gift.”  A harmonica enters the mix after the 1:25 mark.  This provides a timbral contrast during the final chorus. The ending of this brief record is as intriguing as every other part.  Even if you don’t understand any of the Spanish lyrics, “Calypso” is quite alluring.  This pop cut shows Guitarricadelafuente’s musical creativity and versatility.  Fun fact: the word calypso never appears in the song. Go figure!
