Getting to Know… Neverskin | Interview

In the 519^th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, Clint Bakker provides the inside scoop on the Dutch band, Neverskin.   

That is a fair assessment, Clint Bakker. Bakker, one half of the alternative metal band Neverskin (with Romy Dovianus), goes on to say, “But what we do is approach music with total freedom… We simply play what we feel sounds great and what makes us happy.” Rock on! We get the inside scoop on the Dutch band’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and current and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into Getting to Know…Neverskin: Interview No. 519!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes you distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

I don’t know how different we really are; honestly, that’s for others to decide. But what we do is approach music with total freedom. We aren’t bound by a commercial formula or a rigid ‘it must sound like this’ theory. We just love heavy music from around the late 90s and early 2000s, so that’s definitely our musical base. But if we feel like adding death metal, opera, reggae, or pop into the mix, we just do it. We simply play what we feel sounds great and what makes us happy.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Neverskin form, and what were some of your goals or visions early?

Well, we actually reconnected after about 20 years. I was out jogging one day and a song by our old band, Ambiossis, popped up on my shuffle. It triggered something in me, and I thought, ‘I wonder how Remy is doing these days.’ When I got home, I sent him a message, and within a few days, we were hanging out again.

When we restarted, I was honestly wondering if I could still even hold a note the way I used to, and I have to admit I was a bit rusty at first! [Laughs] But after a few days of trying and recording, the old engine started roaring again. Our current vision is simple: it’s about thoroughly enjoying the process, loving the music, and handling everything from start (writing and recording) to finish (mixing, mastering, and everything that comes after) completely ourselves.

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or perspectives changed since you first started? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

Let’s just say the goals we had 20 years ago—when we were young and aspired to total world domination—have shifted quite a bit! [Laughs] Today, we just want to create songs that we truly love, completely stand behind, and share them with as many people as possible. We simply want our music to be heard, and right now, that is more than enough for us. We haven’t even been back together for a full year yet, so who knows where this path will eventually lead…

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences, and how are they influential?

For me personally, I was inspired to start singing by Daniel Johns of Silverchair. The pure emotion and the way his voice carried a song was completely mesmerizing to me. As a band, our collective influences are rooted in those classic 90s and 2000s alternative and nu-metal bands like Korn, Deftones, Taproot, Sevendust, and Ill Niño. But at the same time, we are heavily inspired by newer acts like Memphis May Fire, Sleep Token, Bad Omens, Northlane, and Architects.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

Looking back at our days in Ambiossis, we definitely had some wild and interesting times. We’ve had everything from late-night, alcohol-fueled jam sessions in the studio we rented, to our roadie thinking it would be hilarious to invite a random homeless person into the venue backstage. We’ve recorded in the studio with some of our local musical heroes while smoking some typically Dutch ‘substances,’ and we even got to play in front of a 10,000-strong crowd as the closing act of our national ‘Bevrijdingsfestival’ (Liberation Festival). We had the best time back then; even our simple practice sessions used to attract crowds of people that we would gladly hang out with after we finished playing.

To this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

Personally, “Snatched” vibes very heavily with me. I love the mix of styles—the groovy verse mixed with that melodic chorus and then that super vibey bridge. It just clicks. But honestly, all three of our released songs have something special to me. We produce every single track from scratch, and we only release a song if it passes a very, very critical review process. We’ve already completely scratched multiple tracks that didn’t make the cut. Remy actually just told me that the new song we have lined up next is his absolute favorite so far, so that promises something special!

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left-of-center we should know about …? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Outside of the band, I am a fanatic gamer. If I can find some spare time next to my family and my day job, you can usually find me online getting some matches in on Rocket League with my buddies, or geeking out over Final Fantasy. I actually have a tattoo based on the Final Fantasy games, as well as a tattoo of a certain cartoon character—but I won’t reveal who that one is just yet! [Laughs] Besides gaming, I am currently trying to learn some basic Japanese because my family and I are going to Japan on vacation this summer. I also love cooking, BBQing, and smoking meat, and I’m a huge animal lover. Is that enough tidbits for you?

What is Neverskin currently working on or promoting that you can share? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

Well, we can officially disclose that we have a brand-new track that is about 95% finished. All I can say is that it’s going to be incredibly thick and heavy. Not ‘drop-Z tuning with non-stop screaming and grunting’ heavy, but uniquely Neverskin heavy. Another little secret I can share is that the track we are working on after that one is going to be something completely different from anything we’ve done up until this point.
