ring on the controversy, won’t you? Controversial Tunes 😈🎶 is a column that provides background information and insight into songs that raised eyebrows and totally stirred the pot.  The records that grace Controversial Tunes are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.  On the 29th edition of Controversial Tunes, we explore the controversy behind the song, 🎵 “We Can’t Stop” by 🎙 Miley Cyrus

Theme & Lyrics

In case you forgot, once upon a time, Miley Cyrus asserted, that she “Can’t Be Tamed”.  Interestingly, that came an album before 💿 BANGERZ found the 🏆 Grammy-nominated musician diving headfirst into hip-hop culture. Sometimes her dive into the culture was triumphant, while at other times, it was shameful and disgraceful.  Certainly, it wasn’t without loads of controversy.  Sure, her nudity in the music video for 🎵 “Wrecking Ball” deserves an honorable mention, but it is 🎵 “We Can’t Stop” that solidified the controversial journey of Cyrus.

Truly, she embraced a carefree party, one where “We can kiss who we want” as well as “Screw who we want.” Yeah, Miley makes that clear on the intro of this unapologetic urban-pop banger. On the first verse, there’s booze, “sweaty bodies,” and the expectation “somebody here might get some now.” Hint: SEX!  The first verse isn’t the most controversial you’ll ever hear, but the pre-chorus embraces one of hip-hop’s most unfortunate happens – MOLLY RAP! It finally died out, but during this time, molly was everywhere, and so, Miley copped molly:

“So, la-da-di-da-di, we like to party
Dancing with Molly...”

Geez. ‘Course, on the chorus, “we can’t stop” is the mantra.  On the second verse, it’s more of the same, rebellious, unapologetic partying.  Miley references twerking, cocaine (!), and “getting turned up.” Woo! Truly, Cyrus doesn’t lie when she asserts on the post-chorus, “It’s my mouth, I can say what I want to.”

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji Image“We Can’t Stop” isn’t the most controversial tune to appear on the column, particularly when the likes of “I Cum Blood” is the competition. Still, for ‘Hannah Montana,’ the BANGERZ cycle was wild with “We Can’t Stop” leading the charge.  Interestingly, Cyrus separated herself from hip-hop something fierce on her conservative, 2017 album, 💿 Younger Now.  It was some type of about face.
