“Imake her cards on her birthday / She makes me a better man,” 🎙 Lewis Capaldi sings in the first verse of 🎵 “Pointless”, continuing, “I take her water when she’s thirsty / She takes me as I am.” The dedication – the love – is front and center on the Scottish musician’s second single from his sophomore album, 💿 Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, which arrives in May 2023. Clearly, Capaldi is enamored and so is she!

As always, Lewis Capaldi showcases a beautiful vocal tone. Notably, he exhibits poise early on. Initially, the primary accompaniment is piano, though strings enter the mix as the song progresses.  Following a tenderer verse, by the chorus, Capaldi lets loose, showing the sheer power and command of his pipes.  This is to be expected, especially since the chorus is the centerpiece – tuneful, thoughtfully penned, and memorable.

“From all my airs and graces

To the little things I do

Everything is pointless without you

Of all the dreams I’m chasing

There’s only one I choose

Everything is pointless without you.”

So, so sweet! Also, expectedly, there is more instrumentation in the second verse. It feels like a natural progression, not forced. Capaldi still maintains poise in the second verse, similar to the first, ascending to the next level in the soaring chorus. The bridge marks a contrast, providing sufficient separation from the rest of the song.  During this section, I love the smoothness that Capaldi exhibits during the bridge, including showcasing some falsetto. Post-bridge, Capaldi brings it back down, before temporarily powering his vocals once more.

Final Thoughts 💭

stamp of approvalAll in all, 🎵 “Pointless” marks and enjoyable and respectable second single from Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent.  It’s well performed, well-produced, and well-written.  The dedication is lit to say the least.  Is this a game changing offering from Capaldi? No, but it feels quite authentic and pleasant.  If nothing else, “Pointless” makes you aspire to achieving the love goals that Capaldi sings about.
