English musician Jorja Smith and Nigerian musician Wizkid make a formidable duo on the silky-smooth, vibe-filled smash, “Alive.”
There is a lot to love about “Alive.” The sound of the record earns high marks. The tropical vibes are a great touch. I adore the rhythmic drum programming, fabulous bass line, and the color added by the keys. Jorja Smith eats. Her vocals are buttery smooth and chill. Adding to the decadence is how melodious “Alive” is. It’s also sexy: “All I need to keep me satisfied / And I’ll keep you satisfied.” The chorus is the crème de la crème; tuneful, catchy, and sing-along-able.
“All night
You make me feel so alive
Don’t stop, oh, you’re doing it right
You make me feel so alive
We be up all night
How could you ever think twice?
When it comes to you and I
You make me feel so alive, so alive.”
Wizkid, who enters the mix in the second verse, contrasts and complements Smith. I love his tone; he has a great timbre to his voice. Also, he’s charming: “I got the type of loving wey go make you really feel your best… / I give the type of vibing wey go make you wan dey undress.” Speaking of great, this is how I would describe the synergy by the duo during the bridge, where those tropical vibes are full force.
“Honey (Honey), I’ll never, never leave you for lonely (Leave you for lonely)
Eventually touching your body (Oh)
Oh, baby, make you hold me for long, we (Ooh)
No go fit sit still, my love (Mm)…”
In short, “Alive” slaps. Both Jorja Smith and Wizkid give top-notch vocal performances. The song is tuneful throughout, particularly the centerpiece, the chorus. Memorable theme and lyrics and superb production solidify the song’s excellence.
