Country singer-songwriter Jordan Davis delivers a relatively short but sweet, well-rounded country song with “Mess.”
The first selling point for “Mess” is its lilting compound-duple meter. Another selling point is the production. The lovely guitar textures are marvelous. Furthermore, there are plenty of scintillating country music cues. The biggest selling point of “Mess” is Jordan Davis himself. He delivers pure vocals, and I adore the richness of his tone. He’s commanding in the verses (“Let me lose you one more time, girl, don’t / Make it more than what it isn’t”), while the chorus is golden. This is where Davis’s bread is buttered… or most buttery! It benefits from being memorable, rhythmic, and tuneful.
“Make me undo all my never agains
Make me believe that you need me and then
Back me up down the hall, lock the door
Shake the walls just ‘cause you can
Then go ahead, leave me like the bed
Make me a mess (Make me a mess).”
The brief instrumental section before the bridge is terrific, while the bridge follows, distinguishing itself from the chorus and verses (“And I’ll kick myself when the sun meets the moon / Pick up the pieces you leave when you do what you do”). Ultimately, “Mess” is a relatively short but sweet, well-rounded country song. There is no doubt that Mr. Davis is one talented fella.
