Jason Mraz, Know. [Photo Credit: Atlantic]Grammy-winner Jason Mraz taps Grammy-winner Meghan Trainor for the romantic “More Than Friends,” the fourth advance single from ‘Know.’

Jason Mraz seems poised for critical success with his 2018 album Know. (arrives August 10).  Hopefully, he can get some commercial love as well.  The singles he’s issued in advance of the LP have all been winners. “More Than Friends,” the fourth advance single and the third track on the album, is no exception. “More Than Friends” pairs Mraz with a fellow Grammy-winner, Meghan Trainor. Notably, it’s the sole collaborative song on Know.

“More Than Friends” commences with light accompaniment initially – rhythm guitar.  It eventually expands to include drums, steel guitar, and piano. Overall, Jason Mraz and Meghan Trainor exhibit excellent vocal blend and chemistry.  The performance is lighthearted but also alluring and radiant. Mraz sings the first verse, pre-chorus, and chorus by himself.  On the first verse, with friendship firmly planted, he’s ready to take things a step further.  On the pre-chorus, he tells his potential lover, “Take it easy / ‘Cause it ain’t easy to say.” On the chorus, he expresses his feelings to become an item as opposed to merely friends.  How sweet!

“I just wanna be more than friends / I just wanna be more than friends / I wanna tell everyone you’re taken / And take your hand until the end / I wanna be more than friends.”

On the second verse, sung by Trainor, she agrees that it’s time to take it seriously:

“At the risk of sounding foolish / I don’t wanna fool around no more / If we’re gonna do this then let’s do this / You can fix my broken heart if it’s all yours.”

Later, the post-chorus finds both of them asking to be each other’s significant other:

“I’m asking you to be my baby / I’m giving you my heart, don’t break it / I’m crushing and I’m going crazy / Either way, I know we’ll make it.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “More Than Friends” is an enjoyable, relatable offering from Jason Mraz. Perhaps it’s a bit on the light side and a hair schmaltzy, but Mraz and Trainor make a solid duo.  As for Jason – he’s on fire.
