It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 27th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we dive into “One Night Stand”, the one-hit wonder by J-Shin.

“You say you’re having a baby / But I don’t know if it’s mine / It all started from a one-night stand / It wasn’t part of the plan.”
👀 As J-Shin stated, you usually don’t plan to have a baby when you’re getting freaky in a one-night stand.  It’s all about fun and making your body feel good.  But J-Shin and featured guest LaTocha Scott of Xscape have a situation on their hands!  What isn’t a problem is the greatness of the duet “One Night Stand”.  This marked both their only pop hit as solo artists.  “One Night Stand” peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, solidifying its top 40 status.  The highlight from J-Shin’s 2000 album, My Soul, My Life, was produced by C-Rock – Big Lee.

It features that smooth, adult contemporary R&B production that dominated the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. A fabulous percussive beat provides a mighty anchor.  Both J-Shin and LaTocha Scott deliver polished and sincere vocal performances.  Singing separately, they’re on point.  Duetting, they showcase electrifying chemistry and synergy. Following the chorus, excerpted earlier, J-Shin performs the first verse. His tone is sublime.  He explains how they met: at the club.  Shocker.  “So, I stepped to you with my game down tight,” he sings, and adds, “Before we knew it, it was on for tonight.” Apparently… In the pre-chorus, he lays out the reasons why the baby may not be his – living with her man and creepin’ with her friends. LaTocha Scott takes the reins in the second verse, showing off her powerful pipes. She’s on the defense: “Now, boy, you know just as well as I do / In order to go half on a baby, it takes two.” Facts.  She also informs us why she cheated.  Following another pre-chorus and chorus, both perform the big bridge. La Tocha takes the first half, singing, “But it’s so hard, so hard for me to believe / That I’m having your baby, and it’s driving me crazy.”  J-Shin sings the back half: “Cuz if this is mine / Girl, I’m ready / To take responsibility.” Joining forces on the final chorus, they ate and left no crumbs. No, “One Night Stand” was not the biggest R&B hit of 2000 – it’s sort of underrated, honestly. But this is a fun, well-rounded duet, all told.  Great vocals, separately and when duetting, memorable songwriting, and refined production.  Did this song deserve to be bigger? Perhaps.
