“Our USP is that nobody knows what the hell we are doing.” Um, okay, 🎙 Chorosia! The band continues, in response to our first burning question, “People hear us and ask, “Is this sludge? Is this doom? Is this grind? is this death? Is this life?” WOO! In this Getting to Know… Q&A, we get the inside scoop on the Austrian prog/post-sludge metal band’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know… Chorosia: Interview No. 374!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Chorosia distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

Our USP is that nobody knows what the hell we are doing. People hear us and ask, “Is this sludge? Is this doom? Is this grind? is this death? Is this life?” I think we’re pretty good at combining a ton of influences into one big bucket and making (good) music out of it. It’s not a conscious decision or anything, it’s just what comes out of us naturally. In the end, people either find it interesting or they get confused by it. We’re fine with either one.

ChorosiaOkay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Chorosia form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

It’s basically four dudes who moved to Vienna and met through music and stuff. We’ve wanted to make some music for quite some time and in 2017 it finally started to happen. Our initial goal was let make an album and do some live gigs. We’re now three albums deep and we’re still doing gigs, so we pretty much succeeded at our initial goal, haha!

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

Yes, our goal changed since we first started out but not too much. Like I said, our initial goal was “let’s record some music and do some gigs” and that still is our main goal. However, next to it we’ve added aspirations like, “let’s make vinyl records, let’s write a song in this weird tuning, let’s do a tour in the UK, let’s do this and that.” Essentially, our appetite is a bit bigger now and I think that’s a good thing for a metal band.

ChorosiaEverybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

Individually, our inspirations and influences are really diverse. From jazz to math rock to thrash metal to doom metal to anything you can imagine. That’s why people struggle to put our stuff into one specific genre. As a band, I think we’ve been mostly influenced by bands such as High on Fire, Mastodon, Yob, Inter Arma, Gojira, and similar stuff. Seeing those bands live together definitely shaped our views on music, both writing and performing.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

Hmm, nothing too crazy really happened to us during a performance yet. Apart from breaking strings on stage, playing in 110% moist venues where walls are dripping wet literally, and playing in actual cages and stuff, we’ve had pretty much all normal experiences live. The stuff that happens on tour in foreign cities is magical and what happens on tour stay on tour, so better not to talk about some things, haha!

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

It’s probably 🎵 “Innocence”. There’s just something about that song that sucks you in and spits you out after you’re done. It’s a mind-trip every time we play it.

ChorosiaIs there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, same with things you find awesome or cool. A fun fact that people seem to have figured out only recently is that we’re a Viennese band with none of us being from Vienna or even Austria. That’s mildly interesting I guess.

Closing out, what is Chorosia currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

We’ve just released our third album, 💿 STRAY DOGS, and it’s going to make your day. Go check it out. After you’ve done that, buy a record and come see us play live. If we don’t play near your city feel free to invite us, we like visiting places.

Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
