“We’re leaving ground (Leaving ground) / Will things ever be the same again? / It’s the final countdown.”
Word. Swedish 🇸🇪 rock band Europe, named after the continent, did its big one in 1986.  That’s the year – my birth year, btw – that “The Final Countdown” was born 🤘! “The Final Countdown” is the opener from their third studio album, entitled – wait for it – The Final Countdown! Of course, the multi-platinum smash HAD to be named that!  “The Final Countdown” is the band’s most renowned song, though “Carrie” from the same album charted five spots higher on the Billboard Hot 100 (number three versus number eight) 🤯. Joey Tempest (b. 1963), the lead vocalist, composed the classic, while Kevin Elson produced it.

“The Final Countdown” is a banger from the get-go – that goes without saying! After an enigmatic, nebulous start, the record takes form with the signature, mean, striking, and unforgettable synth riff.  Without listening to it, I can hear it in my head – it’s that distinct and memorable.  It sets the tone for a once-in-a-lifetime arena-/glam-rock/metal cut.  Beyond being gassed up by the killer, brassy keys (Mic Michaeli, b. 1962), the band is locked in. The jagged, rhythmic guitars cook (John Norum, b. 1964), the bass (John Levén, b. 1963) holds down the low end, while the drums (Ian Haugland, b. 1964) pummel.  That, of course, fuels the writer and head honcho, Joey Tempest. He brings the heat with his powerful, pure tenor.  Even with such a rhythmic machine accompanying him, he eats, tearing it up on those high notes while bringing plenty of melodic care and nuance.  Thematically, Europe embraces outer space and science fiction.  Leaving Earth, Tempest asserts in the first verse, “And maybe we’ll come back / To Earth, who can tell?” Where is their destination, exactly? “We’re heading for Venus (Venus) / And still, we stand tall,” he proclaims in the second verse, and adds, “With so many light years to go / And things to be found (To be found) / I’m sure that we’ll all miss her so.” Notably, the Geniuses point out the scientific inaccuracy. Of course, the crème de la crème, aside from that synth riff, is the chorus:

“It’s the final countdown

The final countdown

The final countdown (The final countdown, oh).”

What more needs to be said? “The Final Countdown” is a certified classic. Take one listen, one time, and you’ll hear its enduring magic.
