“I’m ‘bout to eat this shit up.”
Hell yeah, Emei (Emily Li)! Eat that shit up, gurl! And she does on “Night at the Opera”. “Night at the Opera” is the opening track from the alternative pop singer-songwriter’s 2026 EP of the same name. Emei and Ricky Reed composed this theatrical, orchestral pop bop. Reed also produced it.

“Night at the Opera” is a big, dramatic song.  That is a big part of its charm and overall success. Emei shines in her vocal performance, bringing the heat with each note and showing off her big, theatrical personality.  When she sings about eating this shit up during the bridge, she ain’t lying! The songwriting, another winning aspect, is chock-full of operatic and theatrical references. “Am I cursed? / Like a lead in the opera tragically doomed from birth,” Emei asks in the first verse.  In the second, she leans in deeper: “Now cinch your waist, gimme face, innovate, okay, yes / And I think your misery will really sell the documentary.” Misery? Yikes! That’s how you know shit just got real! A refrain and pre-chorus preface the danceable chorus:

“If I’m gonna dance, then you’re gonna dance too

What’s the matter, babe? Did you bring the wrong shoes?

Fire in the risers, so your body better move

To the tiny violins and the big ones too.”

Speaking of violins, strings play a crucial role within the arrangement and production.  These classical music cues match the opera theme and vibes.  There is also a dramatic, high-flying vocal arrangement.  Still, beyond its classical touches, “Night at the Opera” has plenty of pop, with an electrifying beat, programming, and synths. Fun from start to finish, Emei delivers the goods on “Night at the Opera”, PERIODT!
