Dylan Scott, Nothing to Do Town [Photo Credit: Curb]Country singer Dylan Scott delivers a respectable single in “Nothing to Do Town” that appeals to his base, though takes few risks to potentially crossover.

“It ain’t New York City / And it ain’t LA / We ain’t got no rooftop bars / Like they do on Broadway.” Okay… Rising country singer Dylan Scott returns in 2018 with a brand-new single, “Nothing to Do Town.” Last we heard from Scott, he’d rereleased his self-titled debut album in an expanded, deluxe version.  This is a frequent occurrence, particularly with up-and-coming musicians.  Among standout moments from his debut was opener, “My Girl.” But instead of examining what Scott has already accomplished, let’s move on and break down the song at hand.

From the jump, “Nothing to Do Town” reveals its country cards. Clearly, Dylan Scott stays true to his roots, vocally amplifying the twang and tried-and-true country cues. Nothing wrong with that – he is a country musician after all, so… That said, the rhythmic component of “Nothing to Do Town” has some appeal beyond the base, even if it doesn’t go too far out of its way for ‘crossover appeal’ per se.  The synths and programming incorporated in clearly aren’t part of your father’s brand of country, so give Scott, rather his producers, credit for that modern-day swagger.

In regards to his vocal performance, in addition to the twang, Dylan Scott certainly sings the record proficiently, checking off all boxes. There’s nothing game changing about the performance, nor is there anything game changing about the song.  Basically, this is a country song that embraces a familiar script and doesn’t expand beyond it – small town life, simple living, etc.  It works, but doesn’t go against the grain by any means.

Final Thoughts

So, how does “Nothing to Do Town” stack up? It’s a respectable, sound record by Dylan Scott that, again, should appeal and appease his country music fan base.  In the larger scheme of things, it plays out a bit more forgettable – middle-of-the-road if you will.  As the more casual country music listener, personally, I feel like I’ve been here a few many times.  Nothing wrong with it, but, I’d like to hear more, if you catch my drift.
