Dr. John Guns, Overwhelm Me | Music Lifts

In the 31^st edition of Music Lifts (2026), we’re uplifted by Dr. John Guns & The Anointed Voices of St. Paul performing “Overwhelm Me.”

The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 31^st edition of Music Lifts (2026), we highlight “Overwhelm Me” as performed by Dr. John Guns & The Anointed Voices of St. Paul.

How did I first hear the gospel song, “Overwhelm Me”? Sadly, an infamous viral moment from Prophet Brian Carn 😏.  That’s about all I have to say about that, or rather, that’s all I’ll say about that. Dr. John Guns & The Anointed Voices of St. Paul, however, recorded a moving song that will bless you over and over again. “Overwhelm Me” is not a brand-new gospel song, even though I first heard it in 2026. It was originally written in 2009 or 2010 at the church Bishop John E. Guns pastors, St. Paul Church of Jacksonville.  A remastered version of the song was re-released in 2026, hence why it entered my radar so many years later. Dr. Guns, Meachum Clark, and Larry Wilson composed it. Datisha “Tiki” Pickett provides some incredible vocals.

“Overwhelm Me” commences with a powerful introduction. “Father, I need your grace, your strength, and your mercy in this season,” Dr. Guns petitions, and adds, “Overwhelm me with your glory.” 🙏 Tiki Pickett delivers anointed, pure, and powerful lead vocals during the verse,  accompanied by a refined backdrop including reverent keys and lush strings. Meanwhile, Dr. Guns ministers via spoken word, providing timely encouragement and speaking to the greatness of Almighty God.  After the moving verse, the chorus is where the bread is buttered. The choir enters, backing up Pickett, and eventually doing more heavy lifting.  The text is beautiful!

Tiki continues to lead and ad-lib, amping up the spirit.  Likewise, the Bishop continues to minister about God’s glory, mercifulness, and omniscience.  Later, there is a thoughtful quote from the beloved hymn, “I Need Thee Every Hour” that fits in perfectly with the theme. “Overwhelm Me” is a truly special gospel song. While it’s a shame I discovered it infamously, I’m glad I was able to add this meaningful, powerful record to my religious music playlist.
