Sometimes, two is better than one! That is the case on Dazzling Duets! On Dazzling Duets, we highlight striking songs performed by two collaborating artists. These duets can be from any musical style, making Dazzling Duets a flexible, versatile column. In the 36th edition of Dazzling Duets (2026), Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers collaborate on “Islands In the Stream”. Let the dazzle begin!

“Islands in the stream / That is what we are…”
Two Grammy-winning country superstars, Dolly Parton (1946 – 2026) and Kenny Rogers (1938 – 2020), collaborated on a once-in-a-lifetime hit, “Islands In the Stream.” “Islands In the Stream” peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This marked the second number one hit for Parton (“9 to 5”) and Rogers (“Lady”). The Recording Industry Association of America certified the single triple platinum in 2023 💪. Nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, it lost to another huge hit, the Police’s “Every Breath You Take”. Who wrote this masterpiece? Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, and Maurice Gibb – the Bee Gees. Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten, and Karl Richardson produced it.

Early on, this sounds like a Bee Gees composition. Kenny Rogers draws first blood, singing the first verse. His tone is delightful. “Baby, when I met you there was peace unknown,” he sings, and continues, “I set out to get you, with a fine-tooth comb.” Dolly Parton joins him in the second verse, harmonizing.  The synergy is awesome – chef’s kiss! Kenny sings first in the pre-chorus, with Dolly joining in (“All this love we feel needs no conversation / We ride it together, ah-ah”). The chorus is the crème de la crème, the crowning achievement:

“Islands in the stream

That is what we are

No one in between

How can we be wrong?

Sail away with me

To another world

And we rely on each other, ah-ah

From one lover to another, ah-ah.”

The chemistry continues with the tuneful melody and catchy lyrics. The third verse modulates, with Dolly Parton leading the charge. “I can’t live without you if the love was gone,” she sings, and continues, “Everything is nothing if you got no one.” Kenny Rogers joins in the fourth verse, harmonizing beautifully (“And the message is clear / This could be the year for the real thing”). In the second pre-chorus, the order flips: Dolly sings first, then Kenny joins. After the high-flying chorus, a great interlude arrives. Here, Dolly’s biting, powerful pipes stand out the most (“Oh, come sail away with me”). Ultimately, “Islands In the Stream” is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two amazing musicians.  A Grammy wasn’t necessary to validate this magical performance, which speaks for itself.  Notably, Pras Michel sampled it for his own hit, “Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)”.
