“Tumble out of bed, and I stumble to the kitchen / Pour myself a cup of ambition / And yawn and stretch and try to come to life.”
In 2026, the world lost one of its most beloved musicians: Dolly Parton (1946 – 2026).  Parton wasn’t just a musician: she was an actress, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and an undisputed icon. As marvelous as her songs are, her kindness and philanthropy set her apart.  So does her personality – she was one of one.  Also, one of one is the biggest hit of her career, “9 to 5.” “9 to 5” opens her 1980 gold-certified album, 9 To 5 And Odd Jobs. “9 to 5” was the theme song to the film, starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly.  The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, one of two career pop chart-toppers.  It was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2023. Parton wrote this two-time Grammy-winning, all-time bop.

The driving, rhythmic piano and horn hits set the tone. Sufficiently fueled, Dolly Parton comes in strong, impressing with optimistic, spirited vocals.  The melodies are tuneful, while the lyrics are both catchy and thoughtful, capturing the inequality women face compared to men. “They let you dream just to watch ’em shatter / You’re just a step on the bossman’s ladder / But you’ve got dreams he’ll never take away,” she sings in the second verse and concludes, “Waitin’ for the day… the tide’s gonna turn, and it’s all gonna roll your way.” The crème de la crème – the crowning achievement – is the sing-along-able chorus extraordinaire.

“Workin’ 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin’

Barely gettin’ by, it’s all takin’ and no givin’

They just use your mind, and they never give you credit

It’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it.”

Dolly’s vocals are at their most high-flying – you buy what she’s selling! The sublime arrangement and production seal the deal.  The guitars, assertive piano, and of course the brass!  No extensive analysis is necessary regarding “9 to 5.” This timeless song speaks for itself.  This is one of the best songs of Dolly Parton’s illustrious career, one of the best songs of the 80s, and one of the best songs of all time.
