1. Ghost, βCall Me Little Sunshineβ
IMPERA β’
Loma Vista β’
2022
β(Call me) Little Sunshine / (Call me) Call me Mephistopheles.β Woo!
βCall Me Little Sunshineβ arrived as the second advanced single from
IMPERA. IMPERA marks the fifth studio album by
Grammy-winning Swedish metal band,
Ghost, led by
Tobias Forge. I enjoyed βCall Me Little Sunshineβ moderately prior to the release but have a deeper appreciation hearing it in the context of the album.
Within the context of IMPERA, Ghost presents music in a more maximal sense, a clear contrast to the bandβs previous album,
Prequelle. Like βSpillwaysβ that precedes, I appreciate how catchy βCall Me Little Sunshine.β That catchiness encompasses pre-chorus (βYou will never walk alone /You can always reach me / You will never ever walk aloneβ) and chorus (excerpted above). Also, shout out to the pipe organ which just makes everything better, particularly metal
!
2. ROSALΓA, βChicken Teriyakiβ
MOTOMAMI β’
Sony β’
2022
βPaβ ti naki, chicken teriyaki / Tu gata quiere maki, mi gata en Kawasaki!β Woo! Face it, folks β
ROSALΓA is on a creative tear! The
Grammy-winning Latin pop standout never seems to release a bad song. She patea traseros y toma nombres (Eng. Kicks ass and takes names) on
βChicken Teriyakiβ, the third single from her 2022 studio album,
MOTOMAMI.
βChicken Teriyakiβ is a surefire vibe. As always, ROSALΓA amps up the personality β totally badass. Thematically, she flexes throughout the two-minute joint, asserting at one point, βQuiero una cadena que me arruine toβa la cuenta / Como Naomi en los 90β (βI want a chain that ruins my entire account / Like Naomi in the 90sβ). Woo! The chorus, excerpted above, is the crowning achievement, sure to easily get stuck in oneβs head. Even so, the third verse is awesome too: βDe azΓΊcar la mami, todo sin recibo / Leo pentagramaβ, pero no loβ escribeβ (βMamiβs sugar, all without a receipt / I read pentagram, but I donβt write itβ). βChicken Teriyakiβ isnβt deep, with the music video, in all its silliness, confirming such. Still, that reggaeton beat (ROSALΓA,
El Guincho,
Michael Uzowuru,
Noah Goldstein, and
Sky Rompiendo) is no joke, encouraging listeners everywhere to move and groove.
3. 5 Seconds of Summer, βComplete Messβ
βCOMPLETE MESSβ β’
5SOS, LLC / BMG Rights Management (US) LLC β’
2022
βCaught up in heaven, but your heaven ainβt the same / And Iβve never been a saint, have I?β Despite such a messy title, Aussie pop collective
5 Seconds of Summer donβt dare serve up a
βCOMPLETE MESSβ.
Luke Hemmings owns his hellishness, adding another question in the first verse, βBut Iβm never one to change, am I?β Hemmings handles the heavy lifting vocally. Still, all members contribute to the chorus (βYou make me a complete messβ), while
Calum Hood and
Michael Clifford perform the second verse.
Again, βCOMPLETE MESSβ is anything but a complete mess. It was penned by quartet solely with Clifford serving as producer. Even if 5SOS are no longer signed to a major label, the quality remains strong
. Notably, the beginning of βCOMPLETE MESSβ bears similarities to past songs. This love-driven cut is groovy and well-executed. The chorus is #winning for sure! The Aussie band remains on the up-and-up.
4. Elton John & Dua Lipa, βCold Heart β PNAU Remixβ
The Lockdown Sessions β’
Mercury β’
2021
βCold Heart (PNAU Remix)β kicks
The Lockdown Sessions β the 32nd studio album by iconic musician,
Elton John β off with a bang!
PNAU β
Nicholas Littlemore,
Sam Littlemore, and
Peter Mayes β create a transformative remix, period.
Dua Lipa joins John on a delightful mashup sampling his classic,
βSacrificeβ and the interpolation of another,
βRocket Manβ.
From the onset, βCold Heartβ grooves hard. The production is brilliant β colorful, picturesque, and incredibly slick. John is the first voice heard, adorning the warm, groovy backdrop with lyrics from βSacrifice.β Following verse and pre-chorus, a sublime sounding Lipa enters singing βRocket Manβ creating a super cool effect. I like the way that Lipaβs vocals are layered as βCold Heartβ progresses

5. Mary J. Blige, βCome See About Meβ
Good Morning Gorgeous β’
Mary Jane Productions Inc. / 300 Entertainment β’
2022
βCome, come and see about me / You know Iβm really in a good mood / I bought a coast for you / Match that so we can have two.β
βCome See About Me,β a highlight from
Good Morning Gorgeous, possesses a classic, old-school vibe. This perfectly suits the
Academy Award-nominated/Grammy-winning diva,
Mary J. Blige. Worth noting, Good Morning Gorgeous is Bligeβs first new album in five years.
βCome See About Meβ is a throwback record. Blige hasnβt been characterized as a neo-soul artist in her illustrious career, but sheβs released records that qualify. Sheβs such a versatile musician that she can sing in any style. βCome See About Meβ qualifies as one of those incredibly soulful moments preserving the sanctity of soul music.
Cool N Dre and
El Michels provide her with a classy backdrop that helps fuel the fire. Iβd argue βCome See About Meβ is one of her strongest vocal performances on Good Morning Gorgeous.
ββCause we got something to do tonight
And you got a point to prove your pride
We bring color to black and white
What we just did could make a life
βCause we got some things to do tonight.β
6. The Neighbourhood, βCherry Flavouredβ
Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones β’
Columbia β’
2020
Though a bit quirky,
Jesse Rutherford and
The Neighbourhood deliver quite the alluring, charming, vibe-laden record with
βCherry Flavouredβ, a promo single from the bandβs 2020 album,
Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones. With The Neighbourhood songs, youβve got to appreciate that aesthetic and vibe are quite important. Thatβs the case here on βCherry Flavoured,β where we have a detuned pad and acoustic rhythm guitars that help establish a βdruggyβ sound. That druggy sound appears to be by design as βhighnessβ is mentioned throughout the record.
We get the first taste of βhighnessβ on the brief first verse when Jesse sings, βSweet and sour motivation / Wish I could keep concentration.β Of course, he doesnβt as the chorus addresses his unhealthy highβ¦ That said, the refrain, a distinct section that follows the post-chorus speaks of a more positive high:
βCherry flavoured conversations with you
Got me hanging on
Down to Earth from all the waiting
Take me somewhere beyond.β
Rutherford and company could be referencing fans and those who love them as opposed to potentially destructive drugs. The second verse is longer and more dynamic than the first, fitting given the progression of the record itself. Itβs followed by the chorus, post-chorus, and an abbreviated refrain. An outro β an about-face β closes the intriguing βCherry Flavouredβ.

7. BIA, βCanβt Touch Thisβ
For Certain β’
Epic β’
2021
βMy milkshake brings all the boys to the yard / And theyβre like, itβs better than yours / Damn right, itβs better than yours / I can teach you, but I have to charge.β Does anybody remember this aughts classic? Well, if not, let me fill you in! Itβs
βMilkshakeβ by
Kelis. Why do I mention this R&B song when Iβm supposed to write about the
BIA βthisβ song,
βCanβt Touch Thisβ (
For Certain, 2021)? Well, BIA sampled the aughts gem in βCanβt Touch This,β featuring that stellar production by
The Neptunes.
Besides sampling βMilkshake,β BIA also lifts off the chorus, tweaking it to her liking in the second verse: βMy milkshake brings all the boys to the yard (Oh) / in the foreign cars / And theyβre like, itβs better than yours / Damn right, itβs better than yours.β Woo! Itβs not all borrowing though! BIA brings ample personality in the verses and of course, the centerpiece, the chorus. Over banging production by
IRoccOnTheBeat,
London Jae, and
DJ Young Pharaoh, she spits:
βNo stylist, I donβt do repeats
I got money, bitch, Iβm knee-deep
All hunnids, drippinβ in CC
Might pop that pussy like FreakNik
No mileage, boy, you canβt touch this
No bodies, boy, you ainβt fuck shit
Iβm on islands, whippinβ them Porsches (Skrr)
Run shit, and your nigga endorse it (Sheesh).β
Woo! BIA doesnβt play around in the least! βCanβt Touch Thisβ BE-OTCHES!

8 & 9. Years & Years, βConsequencesβ + βCraveβ
Night Call β’
Polydor β’
2022
Once a three-person collective, British synthpop band
Years & Years is now a solo act featuring
Olly Alexander. Despite the changes in the lineup, thereβs no drop off in quality, evidenced by the βcollectiveβsβ 2022 studio album,
Night Call. Olly gets off to a fast start with
βConsequences.β
βYou, you lost what you had just as you found it / No matter what you heard / The consequences, you deserve.β Oh, snap! In this fantastic opener, Olly tells this man heβs going to have to suffer the consequences for mishandling their relationship. He admits he was blindly in love, essentially, but now his eyes have been opened: βDid I ever give a damn about the pain? / Did I ever really care who was to blame?β Sleek production (
Mark Ralph and
King Ed), awesome vocals, and relatable theme and lyrics make βConsequencesβ a kick-ass start to Night Call.
Olly doesnβt stop kicking ass on the opener though! On another βCβ song,
βCrave,β itβs safe to say that the craving is S-T-R-O-N-G. The first three lines out of Ollyβs mouth: βYou come in and out of my dreams / Fuck with my head / Making me crazy.β The thing is, the Years & Years frontman is spitting straight-up facts. However, thereβs more to it than mere fantasy. This man has caused Olly ample love pain, yet he craves it because he βdonβt ever wanna replace all the heartache / For a dream come true / The only thing I crave is the pain from you.β Is that crazy? Yes, but as we all know and can sympathize, love is a crazy thing. He masterfully captures its effects on βCrave,β another surefire gem from Night Call.
10. Maren Morris, βCircles Around This Townβ
Humble Quest β’
Sony Music Entertainment β’
2022
Grammy-winning country singer/songwriter
Maren Morris shines on
βCircles Around This Townβ, the first single from her 2022 album,
Humble Quest. On βCircles,β she co-writes with a talented crew:
Jimmy Robbins,
Julia Michaels, and her husband,
Ryan Hurd. Furthermore, βitβ producer
Greg Kurstin works behind the board.
Vocally, Morris sounds strong
on βCircles Around This Town.β Besides being assertive and exhibiting a great tone, she also gives ample personality. She plays to her country fan base, but pop fans will enjoy this one too. Among my favorite lyrics occurs during the second verse: βSo many times, I thought about lΠ΅avinβ / Got my ass kicked tryinβ to compete with / Everybody elseβs ones that got away.β Thematically, Maren reminisces on her βcome upβ β how hard it was to get where she is now moving to Nashville. Even though sheβs made it, she acknowledges sheβs βStill got the pedal down / Drivinβ circles around this town.β Of course, those awesome lyrics hail from the chorus, which is big and memorable. Ultimately, βCircles Around This Townβ is a terrific song.

11. Saweetie, βCloserβ (Ft. H.E.R.)
βCloserβ (Ft. H.E.R.) β’
ICY / Warner β’
2022
Grammy-nominated rapper
Saweetie is scoring hits while simultaneously receiving criticism. Regardless of the skeptics, she continues to release music including a single with
Academy/Grammy award winner
H.E.R.
βCloserβ appears on the rapperβs 2022 debut album,
Pretty Bitch Music. It falls in line with several pop-oriented records from female rappers.
βCloserβ sounds like songs that
Doja Cat has released. I doubt this is a coincidence given her success with records like
βSay Soβ and
βKiss Me Moreβ. Instead of tapping SZA for the assist, itβs H.E.R. who embraces those light, sexy, feel-good vibes. Saweetie brings a more aggressive, biting approach to her rhymes in the verses, contrasting the smooth backdrop (
DJ Swish,
Kaine,
Mike Crook, and
Ryan Ogren). The rhymes encompass sex mostly (βTake them eight-inch out them drawers / Da Vinci dick, come paint these wallsβ), with some drip mixed in (βI got βem sending Birkins on my birthdayβ). Is it effective? It works, though itβs nothing brand-new necessarily.
12. Chris Stapleton, βColdβ
Starting Over β’
Mercury β’
2020
βOh, girl, you know you left this hole / Right here in the middle of my soul.β
Grammy-winning country musician
Chris Stapleton shines on
βCold,β among the best songs from his fourth studio album,
Starting Over. On this five-minute-plus, gorgeous, minor-key βslow burnerβ, a passionate Stapleton is brokenhearted to the nth degree. βWhat am I supposed to say / If anybody ask me about you?β he sings on the second verse, adding, βGuess Iβll tell βem Iβm without you.β
At another point in this heartbroken gem, Mr. Stapleton asserts, this girl βCut me knife / And put my love on ice.β Man, oh man, I feel that pain! βColdβ is a masterful blend of country and rock, with a dash of soul. Even with its classic touches β classy strings and Hammond B3 β thereβs a crossover appeal. You donβt have to love country music to love this one β it stands on its own.

13. Megan Thee Stallion, βCirclesβ
Good News β’
1501 Certified Ent. LLC / 300 Entertainment β’
2020
Megan Thee Stallion enlists
Rick Star Did It and
Cool N Dre to work the boards on
βCircles.β βCirclesβ is a highlight from her 2020 debut album,
Good News. Sampling fuels the fire, this time, enlisting a
Jazmine Sullivan gem (
βHolding You Down (Goinβ in Circles)β from
Love Me Back) fueling the fire.
After totally obliterating
Tory Lanez, the
Grammy winner mostly focuses on being a βbad bitch.β Still, she references adversity (βBullet wounds, backstabs, mama died, still sadβ) and throws some shade (βNiggas love usinβ Instagram like a journalβ). Most importantly, Thee Stallion informs us βWe ainβt goinβ back and forth with the lil boys.β
! Worth noting, Tory Lanez is short and very thin.
14. Joshua Bassett, βCrisisβ
Crisis / Secret / Set Me Free (EP) β’
Warner β’
2021
βMy label said to never have a crisis / And here I am, guitar in my hand, in the middle of one, hmm.β Oh, the power of honesty and vulnerability! While heβs overshadowed by noise about everything else outside of his music, but the talented
Joshua Bassett delivers on his honest single,
βCrisisβ, the opener from his three-song single/EP
Crisis / Secret / Set Me Free (EP).
βCrisisβ was penned by Bassett,
Derrick Southerland, and
Mikey Reaves with Reaves working behind the boards as well. The sound is a tasty blend of folk-pop, singer/songwriter, and, well, standard pop. In three minutes, Bassett allows himself to be vulnerable, revisiting a past relationship/break-up (likely Rodrigo). From the start, he serves up beautiful, compelling, emotional, and honest vocals, clearly affected by the aftermath of the relationship and perceptions of others. He doesnβt hold back on the pre-chorus, singing, βAnd if you get to tell your truth, then so do I / And itβs cool if you want me to play the bad guy.β Woo! Of course, the centerpiece is the chorus, where Bassett manages to slip in a timely s-bomb:
βBut donβt you dare act like I didnβt love you
Donβt go thinkinβ that I didnβt hurt, too
Donβt you ever wonder if Iβm okay after all you put me through
Half the shit youβre sayingβs only half-true
Messinβ with my life as a career move
I canβt help but wonder why you wonβt make it end
Guess you would never dare
You would never dare to waste a crisis.β
Again, I say, WOO! Bassett delivers an enjoyable, honest, and well-rounded record on βCrisisβ regardless how you feel about him. He is talented.
15. Avril Lavigne, βCannonballβ
Love Sux β’
DTA / Elektra β’
2022
Sometimes, you can get away from what made you famous and notable initially. For
Avril Lavigne, it was an edgier brand of pop β emo and punk-infused. Then, the
Grammy-nominated Canadian musician grew up and moved away from her brand. At 37, she returned to form β her roots β on her enjoyable seventh studio album,
Love Sux. She kicks things off with a bang with
βCannonball.β
βYou did me dirty, now Iβm gonna live a life without you
I just wrote a song that goes, βI donβt give a fuck about you.ββ
Holy SHITake mushrooms Avril! βCannonballβ is aggressive and unapologetic β weβd expect no less with a title like βCannonball.β Indeed, Lavigne comes into Love Sux βlike a cannonballβ as the chorus asserts. She keeps things short but potent to the nth degree. The track comprises driving rhythms, heavy guitars, and commanding vocals. All in all, it is a great start to an album that finds her returning to her roots.
