n my eyes, 🎙 Maren Morris is one of the better country musicians of the 2010s/20s. I knew when she blessed us with her 🏆 Grammy-winning 🎵 “My Church” that things were looking up for her – NO CAP (Yeah, I know country musicians don’t say that but…). Morris returns with a promising new single, 🎵 “Circles Around This Town”, which showcases her talents superbly. On “Circles,” she co-writes with a talented crew: 🎼✍ Jimmy Robbins, 🎼✍ Julia Michaels, and her husband, 🎼✍ Ryan Hurd. Furthermore, she has ‘it’ producer 🎛 Greg Kurstin working those boards! It bodes well in her favor!“Circles Around This Town” commences enigmatically, before settling into a standard, country groove and sound. Vocally, as expected, Morris sounds strong 💪. Besides being assertive and exhibiting a great tone, she also gives ample personality. She plays to her country fan base, but pop fans will likely be on board with this one too. Among my favorite lyrics occurs during the second verse: “So many times, I thought about lеavin’ / Got my ass kicked tryin’ to compete with / Evеrybody else’s ones that got away.” Thematically, Maren reminisces on her ‘come up’ – how hard it was to get where she is now moving to Nashville. Even though she’s made it, she acknowledges she’s “Still got the pedal down / Drivin’ circles around this town.” Of course, those awesome lyrics hail from the chorus, which is big and memorable, and should please both country and pop fans.
Final Thoughts 💭
Once again, Maren Morris delivers the goods. On “Circles Around This Town,” she delivers awesome vocals. Furthermore, the songwriting is compelling – personal and specific to her situation. Finally, the production and sound of the record alluring. Does she have a hit on her hands? You bet!
