In 2019, BROCKHAMPTON released a compelling fifth studio album, GINGER. One of the best songs from the album was “Sugar,” which commenced with a chorus performed by Ryan Beatty, with pitch-shifted vocals.  On “Sugar (Remix),” an intro by bearface precedes Beatty’s chorus, instantly differentiating the remix from the original.  It’s not merely an intro that changes things up on “Sugar (Remix).”  Following the semi-old-school, relatively catchy chorus, Grammy-winning pop sensation Dua Lipa replaces the original verse by Dom McLennon.

“I move mountains on my own, don’t need nobody’s help / I’ve been lookin’ after me like only I can watch my back,” Dua Lipa sings on the first verse.  She goes on to add, however, “You know you really turned me on, right from the start / Just to hear you call my name, I call to God.”  Da-yum! She joins Beatty on the following chorus, before Matt Champion drops a shorter, brand-new verse, compared to the original. It’s a sexy verse, though it doesn’t cross any lines.

“I don’t want us movin’ too fast (Fast, play your part, play your part)
(That’s a damn shame, but it gon’ make your man insane).”

More changes occur post-Matt Champion. The original bearface pre-chorus is nixed. Jon B and bearface to deliver a verse following the chorus, highlighted by the lyric, “Pour some more on you, sugar on me.” Kevin Abstract does perform the bridge with Jon B, while Ryan Beatty also adds a couple of lines. Bearface handles a portion of outro, which asks, “Do you love me, love me, love me?”, like the original, but he’s also joined by Joba and Kevin Abstract.

Final Thoughts

“Sugar” was a great record in the first place.  Likewise, “Sugar (Remix)” is a great record.  What makes this stand out more than amny remixes is that there are clear-cut differences that differentiate from the original.  Adding Dua Lipa is always a blessing in my mind, and she certainly amplifies the sweetness.  That Jon B guy is none too shabby himself.  All in all, “Sugar (Remix)” is a winner.
